We so appreciate all of you! YOU represent your guild! YOU make the show! All of us working together to present a beautiful and successful show can only happen because of YOU! THANK YOU GIRLS!
GET YOUR QUILTS FINISHED! Registration forms are due March 10th, 2010! Please turn the forms in to Connie Wagner or Carlene Davis! Registration forms included in newsletter and will be available at guild meetings. The registration form also includes the antiques and accessories items. We need these items to set at the feet of the quilt hangars. Please fill them out and returned by March meeting. This way Carlene and Jeanne will have a good idea of setting up the floor plans! And Connie needs time to type them up so they will look nice for the quilt show! April 7th meeting will be the absolute last day of registration.
New Changes to Quilt Show set up! In addition to 9 Vendors, the Boutique will also make its début in the main room! With fewer members it is getting harder and harder to get that room filled with large quilts. It has been discussed that we will hang the small quilts alongside the large ones. Carlene and Jeanne Moorehead will have a floor plan laid out for the show. If you have thoughts on this please let Carlene know. We appreciate all your talents!
Boutique items! All kitted items that Jeanne and Ruth put together for sale for NIQG need to be returned to them by March meeting! Any other items that you wish to donate need to be brought to them ASAP! The girls need time to get them marked for sale. All other personal items to be sold in the Boutique must be written on a form and given to Boutique Chairs- Phyllis Wright and Mary Ann Johnson. They will have the forms at March meeting for you to fill out. You need not return them until day of ‘set up’.
Raffle tickets- MEMBERS! If you have not purchased your raffle tickets do so now! You may sell them or enter your name to win the ‘Cabin Lights’ quilt. Come on Girls! Ticket Sales are lagging! Secretary’s Report by Kim Sime
General Meeting January 13, 2010
The meeting was called to order by President Jenny Schlutz. The morning work session passed by quickly with members working hard and having fun completing charity quilts. Happy Birthday was sung to those with January birthdays: Marge Bahnsen, Lola Stiles and Jo Best. The next Board meeting will be Tuesday, January 19, 2010. Everyone is welcome. A correction was made to the January newsletter - Gwen Matthews has also received a comfort quilt from the Guild. The treasurer’s report and secretary’s minutes were approved as published in the newsletter. A comfort quilt was recently given to Margaret McMullin who has been ill.
The February workshop will be a time to finish making items for the Boutique and to finish tying the charity quilts. Cathy Knowles will present a mini class “Easy Folded Flowers” with kits being available. Deanne Eiseman will be presenting the March workshop, Easy Trapunto, with purchase of the pattern. A sign up is available so that Deanne knows how many participants to expect.
Carlene Davis updated us on the April 17 – 18 Quilt Show. Volunteers were asked to sign up to help at various positions. Accessories are needed to place around the quilt frames. Please register those accessories by March. Also, quilts to be displayed in the show must be registered by March so there is time to plan final set up. The quilts, boutique, and vendors will all be in the gym. Mary Ann Johnson and Phyllis Wright will be co-chairing the boutique. A committee of 4-5 will be formed to help with the quilt registration.
Connie Wager was the winner of the lottery blocks this month. The February lottery block will be The Scrapbagger. Instructions are available to those interested. Betty Neel showed the memorial quilt that will be displayed at the quilt show and explained how the past members names will be placed on the back of the quilt. After the quilt show, the back will be removed and the quilt will be used again as a charity quilt. We cleaned out the cupboard for the Chinese auction! There were many lucky winners. $28.25 was raised. Jean Payne won the door prize.
Show and Tell:
Joan Chandler – a beautiful king size quilt, Garden Twist
Margaret McMullin – 5 table runners she has made for her nieces
Barb DeBoer – hand quilted Little Tangy
Marge Bahnsen – very cute hats she made
Marilyn Meinecke – a quilt project made with others from another quilt group. Marilyn was surprised to see the progress!
Carlene Davis – showed us how she decorated the bag she got from Santa at the Dec. meeting
Meeting adjourned. Kim Sime, Secretary
NIQG Board Meeting January 19, 2010
The meeting was opened by President Jenny Schlutz with 7 board members present. The treasurer and secretary’s reports were approved as presented. The June workshop and trunk show will be presented by Shelly Robson with the cost being approved by the Board.
The upcoming Quilt Show was discussed. Mary Ann Johnson and Phyllis Wright will take over as co-chairs of the Boutique at the upcoming quilt show. Carlene Davis has acquired additional real estate signs that will be updated and will be placed around the community one week prior to the show. There will be no bed turning during the show due to the new layout of space in the gym being tried this year.
With additional donations, there were 33 twin to full size quilts and 9 ABC quilts completed for charity in January. Habitat quilts will be labeled and given in memory of past members. A photo will be taken of each donated quilt and sent to the family of the past member with a note of who received the quilt.
Meeting adjourned. Kim Sime, Secretary
Happy Quilting !!
A happy quilter is one who has stitched a quilt with love and then given it to someone in need of comfort!
The following was emailed to me and I thought I would share it with you girls. If anyone would like to whip up this quick block please do and bring it to the meeting! I will take care of mailing
We are Patty Ozga and Carol Adams and we are Co-Chairs for the 2010 Ellis County Quilt Show, sponsored by the Creative Quilters Guild of Ellis County, Texas, USA. Here is the link to our website: www.elliscountyquilters.com. Our quilt show will be held July 16-17, 2010.
The theme for our 2010 Quilt Show is “Stitches Around the World”. In support of this theme, would your guild be willing to send us an 8” square (unfinished size) piece of fabric with your guild name and location embroidered, appliquéd, or hand-written in the center of the square? We will take the squares we receive and sew them together to make a quilt top that will be prominently displayed at our quilt show. Any fabric, color and pattern are welcome. Our theme quilt will highlight all types of sewing groups from around the world. We would love to have a fabric square from your guild.
If you choose to send the 8” square, could we please get it by February 20, 2010? Please send them to:

Good Sheppard asks us a favor!
Friday May 7, 2010 at 1:30PM
Perri Atkinson is the director of Activities at the Good Sheppard. She has contacted me about doing something special for a Mother’s Day event to be held for the Senior Citizens who reside there. She would love to have us present a very small quilt show.
What this would entail is this:
If we could get 5 or 6 gals (or more) to bring 2 or 3 quilts each we would put up chairs on tables and drape the quilts over them so that they hang down for viewing. We are then asked to stay with the quilts and as the residents come and observe the quilts, we could visit with them and answer any questions about the quilts. It has never been done at the Sheppard before and Perri thought this would be a wonderful new thing for the residents to enjoy. Coffee and treats will be served. It would only take about an hour or hour and a half.
Please join with me to put a smile on the faces of our friends as we give a bit of our time to them! What better way to give of yourself then to help them celebrate Mother’s Day!
Please let me know if you are available. Perri needs to know soon so that she can schedule the event! Thank you girls! Jenny
Member News
We wish to express our sympathy to Arla Loeffler’s family and friends as she passed away January 6, 2010. Arla was a long time member of our guild. She was an avid quilter and made many beautiful quilts. These gorgeous quilts were displayed at her funeral. She will be missed.
We also would like to express our sympathy to Beverly Larson’s family and friends as she passed away January 26th, 2010. She was a past member from the Lake Mills area and had moved to Rochester, MN a few years ago. She will also be missed.
Margaret McMullin is recovering nicely from her bout of pneumonia and congestive heart. We are very glad you are healing Margaret! Now it’s time for quilting and classes!
And awesome website to visit is: http://romanianquiltstudio.com/english/index.htm
This awesome site is a quilters dream! Geta Grama offers free patterns and super tutorials for a beginner quilter as well as the novice. They are printer friendly tutorials and patterns. Thank you Mandy Meierotto for alerting me to this site!
As I finish up the newsletter I looked at the thermometer and it says 3 degrees below zero! Really! This is the perfect time to get your quilts finished for the quilt show before it becomes too warm to be under them as you quilt! Take this opportunity and get busy! Isn’t it great to live in northern Iowa? With our lovely wickedly cold winters it gives us the time and incentive to quilt till our fingers drop off! And when you have your quilts ready for the show, don’t forget our charities. There is always a need for any quilts that you can make to donate!
Too cold to take a walk? Well hop in your care and head on down to your local fabric shop and get some new stash going! We need to support our fabric and quilt shops! And besides going into one or two will inspire you to make quilts, quilts and more quilts

Habitat for Humanity
February 18th, 5:30PM at 1810 S Coolidge
will be the next dedication!
Chris Hjehmgren and his son will be the new residents of this home. This home was one of the first two Habitat homes to be built in the Cerro Gordo area. It was donated back to the organization a couple of years ago. Renovations and repairs are almost complete for a local father and son who were flood victims four times, most recently in June 2008 in Mason City. Two quilts will be presented to them by Margaret! Thank you Margaret!
Don’t forget your lottery blocks!
February Workshop and Program
We will be finishing items for the Boutique and also finish tying and labeling the charity quilts in the morning. Please come help us and enjoy fellowship, coffee and treats.
We will have potluck at noon. This is always a necessary requirement of quilting!
Cathy Knowles will be presenting a ‘Hand Work Project’ of Folded Flowers. You will need to bring your hand sewing kit for this fun project. She will have Flower kits available for $1 each. Please be kind and pay her for her hard work.
It is important to think about your hand sewing kit as we will be doing a small competition on ‘who has the most efficient’ kit in North Iowa! So be prepared for a little fun and a lot of smiles! There may even be a gift of two!
Reminder that coffee needs to be purchased by Group 1!
Lets Swap Squares 2009-2010
By now you all should have the Quilt Magazine Dec/Jan issue # 106 page 178. I
We are trading 12 sets of 2. If you put your set of 2 in a small baggy with the 12 other sets we can divide these up easily.
Please remember the golden rule: trade with others as you wish others to trade unto you, good quality, 100% cotton quilt weight fabric.

Feel free to touch base with us if you have any questions. Thank you so much and Happy Stitching! Carol Adams and Patty Ozga
Margaret McMullin would like to thank everyone for the beautiful comfort quilt and for the many prayers and cards she received.

It is getting to the time that we must be thinking about voting in new officers, boards and chairladies! I know that many of you have been long time members and have held many positions in the past, but we still need you especially with our membership so small. Please be willing to hold a position and keep our guild on track. Our main goal as a whole is education and charities! We need you to help continue these projects!
Remember to bring back your comfort blocks and give them to Carlene!
