North Iowa Fair July 26-30, 2006 Then and now 1956-2006
We will have a booth again this year to promote our club and the Lake Area Quilters Guild in the 4 Seasons building. Dixie Schaer is ‘Chairing’ this project. The set-up time for our booth is Tuesday at 2:30 on July 25th. Please come with a quilt or 2 and any props that will enhance the quilting scene. We are still is in need of people to work the booth. Please let Dixie (641-423-8846) know what you can bring. We look forward to having a fun time with you!
You may enter quilts and other creations for competition by contacting North Iowa Fair Association, 641-423-1590 or go to 3700 4th ST S W Mason City, Iowa 50401. Good luck on your entries!

June Workshop-Flower Pounding by Rozena Van Lent was a great class and full of creative quilters! Rozena is a very talented artist and led us on a new road to creating a one of a kind quilt! Under the guidance of Rozena- hammers, masking tape, kitchen cutting boards and PFD fabric, the girls went ‘Hog Wild” and pounded out beautiful masterpieces of floral designs! The fun part of this project is that you never really knew what you where going to end up with as each flower petal and leaf left a surprise dye on the fabric. You may start out with a red flower petal and end up with a purple dye or pound out a dark green leaf and end up with lime green. Can you imagine walking by the Masonic Temple and hearing all the hammers pounding at once. I bet it sounded like major remodeling going on. After we felt we had enough color on our fabric, Rozena then showed us how to enhance the dyed splotches into detailed floral designs. There was not one block that looked even remotely like another’s. I was so excited by this neat method that I went home and pounded out some lilies that I had at my house. The orange stayed orange but the red lilies became a dirty orange and gray. Sounds awful but really turned out pretty. I cut the leaves of the lily in half, length wise and those dyes turned from dark green to olive. This could be addicting! Rozena also showed us some tricks to painting floral on cards for all occasions and had some card packs for sale. Many thanks to Rozena for a wonderful and fun class!
New Note: Some names have been switched to different groups in order to even the group numbers out. Please check to see what group you belong to. We still need some gals to help with the Christmas Party. Kelsey and I are creating a ‘make and take’ project for you. Can someone please volunteer! There will be at minimum $10 fee to attend workshops given by professionals not members. Thanks to all of you for participating to make the guild run smoothly!

Cure for Breast Cancer
Repeating the pattern for Woven Heart, in June newsletter. If you have miss placed your pattern let me know. I have copies if you need them. 2006-2007 Pattern Committee
A mystery quilt will be started in September. It is possible to make this quilt scrappy. However if you do make it scrappy you need to divide your colors that have a good contrast between them as follows: Light for the background-Medium/medium dark as the focus fabric and dark as the contrast. Make sure there is good contrast between background and the other two color ways. More details on the way!

Doris Kluss Raffle Quilt
Doris Kluss was a special quilter. She was extremely kind and a very skilled at quilting. She could take the most Gosh Awful fabric and create works of art! She also loved her 4 cats. A round robin quilt in the cat theme was in the works for Doris Kluss when she passed away July 2, 1996. It was finished by the members in the round robin project and kept at the North Center. Now with the North Center moving to the Senior Citizens Center there will not be a home for it. So it was decided to raffle it to a lucky member in our group. So far $100 has been bought in tickets. This money will go to the Treasury. The winner will be drawn at September meeting. Good luck ladies.

From the beginning of eternity,
To the end of time and space,
To the beginning of every end,
And the end of every place. What am I?

Kelsey’s Korner
I know that not everyone has taken a good look at our web site. I also realize that not everyone knows we have a new space site. So this month I am going to talk about both.
The web site address is http://www.niqg.org/. It opens to the main page which has a lot of information on it. The first section has general information about where and when we meet as well as what we do.
The next section has membership dues, cook book and guild pin prices. This is followed by our officers, board members and Committee chairs. You will find names linked to e-mail for a few of these names.
Next we have Links We Talked About. This provides links that our guests provide to their web sites so you can get more information. Mailing address, Current Projects and quilt show committee follows. Finally we have information about other area guilds and long arm quilters.
On the left side of the site is a navigation bar. When you have your cursor locked on the main section this portion does not print. This way you can print the programming page or calendar page and not have the navigation bar taking space.
So what is on the navigation bar? Here you will find links to our pages of history, by-laws, Programs, Area Events Calendar, Newsletters, Show and Tell blog, Frequently Asked Questions, and each charity we donate quilts to have their own page.
Changes will be happening in the near future to slim our web site down and condense material. There may even be a new addition! We want our site to be friendly to all and help bring in new members. If you have any ideas please do talk to me about them or e-mail suggestions to NIQG@mchsi.com.

The MSN Space is new and an exciting medium. For this discussion you can refer to the printed copy of the space I have included. I found this space after a long and exasperating search for some place to put our Quilt Show photos. Other places require viewers to get their own account before viewing or require us to purchase something before they will keep photos. So without further ado… NIQG’s MSN Space can be found at http://niqg.spaces.msn.com/.
At the top of the page, just above the guild name you will find: Get Your Own Space, Subscribe to RSS Feed, Tell a Friend and Search Spaces. The first of these is self explanatory. An RSS feed is simply a way for your computer to get updates to this site as soon as they are posted without having to physically go to the site. Tell a friend allows you to e-mail the page to someone else. Search spaces allows you to type in a subject and look at sites related to that subject.
Below our name there are links to home, profile, blog, photos and lists. By clicking on these you will be able to see one of the subjects at full page instead of as smaller boxes. Below those links are the profile I created for our guild.
Next to the profile block is the blog. This blog allows several subjects to be bogged on and I will be setting others up as time goes by. For now, Madame Vice-President is the only one currently running.
On the far right of the page is the photos block. Here you can view slideshows. June’s program and show & tell are currently on this area. You can make the pictures go faster or slower and yes, you can capture pictures by right clicking on the picture. A word of caution: you may want to slow or pause the slide show before attempting to capture a picture. Underneath the slideshow is a list of picture albums to choose from. Of course if you click on the photos link I mentioned above you can increase the viewing size of the slideshow.
Below the photos block you will find a list of blog categories and an archive list. On the far left of the page under the guild profile is a custom list. These are links made available for other sites or spaces. Later on I may be moving the Links We Talked about to this area. All of our show and tell pictures will be on our spaces from now on and urgent messages or commentaries will also be posted here. For those of you already with computers be sure to add this site to your favorites. Those that do not may want to start thinking about going to your local library and using their computers periodically.
Notes from Marie Senne-incoming President
Hi All! Just wanted everybody to know that everyone is welcome to come and enjoy our club! Whether you are a new member or a seasoned one all are welcome to bring friends who may even become prospective new members! The first visit is free! I am looking forward to being your President this next Quilt Year! I hope all of you will enjoy the many activities planned and being planned by our members. Just wanted to remind you of the ‘BIG PLASTIC PIG’ at the sign in tables. If you wish to participate….since we really didn’t celebrate our 25th anniversary, sooooo….as one way to do that we will think ‘25’! Every time you purchase fabric you can feed the ‘PIGGY’ by putting a quarter in the pig. By now it looks like I am over 5 bucks already! How about all of you?! If you forget your name tag- 25 cents to the ‘PIGGY’! It’s your birthday! 25 cents goes in! Or if you feel like tossing a quarter in the ‘PIGGY’ go right ahead. It is all for the good of the guild. The money will go for future workshops and programs and whatever we need to use it for. Raffle tickets for Doris Kluss’ quilt will be available until September meeting, which we will draw out the lucky winning name! $100 in tickets have been sold so far. Also don’t forget to pay your dues of $15 to Ruth Ward and Jenny will need 12 SASE envelopes in order for you to receive your newsletter by mail! Hope all of you have a quilty summer and will see you all at picnic! Marie Senne
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update on the new sewing room! I finally am moved in! Had to do some major cleaning first, you know like washing windows, shampooing the carpet and painting the walls. I don’t know why I bothered painting the walls as there is a quilt covering every square inch of them. But at least I know they are freshly painted. Ivan, my Step Father made custom sized quilt hangers for each wall space. I bought a new twin sized bed (I may have to rest once in a while)(and it makes a great quilt rack), a TV stand for my TV and tables in which to sew and work on along with my little portable table that I used at the Beehive Camp Retreat with Pat Speth. After rearranging the bed and the tables 3 times now, I think they are in the right place for me. I was also able to move all my fabric stash into this room. It is right where I can easily get access to and looks like it belongs there, by the way! Before it was in a hall closet on shelving which worked out fine but hard to see even with the hall lights on. The shelving in the closet can now be used for other quilty things and actually have some semblance of order! Now I am set to sew up a storm! The best part is that I can leave it all set up and not have to put it all away all the time. I had been sewing at my kitchen table all these years. I am in Heaven! Jenny
