August 14, 2009

Hello Everyone! On August 12th, we will be having our annual picnic at Central Park in Clear Lake down town in the room behind the band shell. It is air conditioned and has a wonderful view of the lake. You may arrive at 10:30AM. If you can help set up tables and chairs it would be much appreciated. We will have a short board meeting at 11:00AM as officers, boards and chairs take over their positions.
10:30AM-2PM--Flea Market time! Tables will be set up alone the window sides in which to sell your items. You may sell any sewing related items such as fabric, quilt tops, quilt blocks, scissors or anything related to sewing. Please have items clearly marked and take care of your own money. No Chinese Auction.
10-10” fabric exchange! If you would like to participate, bring 10 -10” squares in a baggie or pinned together to exchange with fellow members. The more 10-10” packets you bring the more you can exchange with quilters. A very nice way to get extra fabrics that you can use in your scrappy quilts!
At 11:30AM we will share a potluck. Coffee and a cool drink will be offered. Paper plates, table ware, cups and napkins will be provided. You may bring your own table setting if you prefer.
After Potluck we will have a general meeting and then the Naughty Row by Row Reveal!

Naughty Row by Row Reveal!
We are about to embark on a new quilting year of workshops and programs but not before we reveal the rows to the owners of our project, The ‘Naughty Row by Row’! There’s no hiding girls! We will know who was naughty and who was nice. I had trouble being naughty as I know some of you did, but I did see some really naughty rows created and oh so cute too!
Ok you Naughty Girls! Here’s the scoop! When you arrive with your brown bags please bring them to me or Kim Sime. After our general meeting, we will have a flannel board set up in which Kim will take pictures of the owners with their rows. We will be doing this instead of playing quilt bingo after our general meeting. We will try to move it along as fast as we can as there are 15 participating in the project. We really all do want to see what happened in your bags! Get ready for some fun!
What are you going to do with your rows? You will have until January 2010 to finish your quilt in any fashion that fits you or should we say fits your ‘rows’ to be eligible for some very nice prizes. Prizes donated by Dixie Schaer as Door Prize Chair for our Quilt Show. Quilt labels will be available for all Naughty Girls to use if you wish! See you all at the picnic!

Apple Blossom Quilts
-Will be coming to our guild on October 14th, 2009. I receive a wonderful newsletter from Friendship Quilters Guild located in Elizabeth, Illinois. In it, Barb Janz, the newsletter editor, had the following announcement. I went to Connie’s, Apple Blossom website to check it out. I did not see mention of the offer but I think when I receive the newsletter it will be talked about in it. I signed up for it today. Here is what Connie, owner of Apple Blossom Quilts has to say.

“Starting September 15, 2009, I will have a new 12-month free BOM. I have just one block made so far, but I'm lovin' it. The blocks will be large (18"). I'm making mine as a scrap quilt although it doesn't have to be scrappy. The block has a lot more piecing than you usually see from me. I'm also keeping the appliqué large, simple and floral. This will be the perfect quilt for a piecer who would like to get into appliqué.
The free pattern will only be available to readers of my newsletter. Please tell your quilting friends. They will want to sign up before September.”

Notes from our outgoing President-Carlene Davis
Well, here we are again. It's time for the New Year to begin and that means that it's my time to pass the gavel on to the new president, Jenny. This year has gone faster than some and slower than some if you know what I mean. We've had some good meetings, good workshops and a lot of good times. I am a little sad about the time passing, but I've enjoyed being your president and especially a member of this guild. It is also the time for renewing your membership to the guild. Remember, that $20.00 gives you a much needed day out, companionship and a fun learning experience for the entire year. We would miss you very much if you do not renew. We had a fun experience at the North Iowa Fair, but was a little disappointed that none of us, myself included, entered any quilts to be judged. I know that we have very good quilters in our guild and I realize that time gets away from us so we don't always get things done between one fair to the next. Oh, well. Maybe next year???? It is already August and we must get moving on the quilt show. We had a meeting on the 21st, but did not have a big response, so will be discussing the show at the picnic. Remember, the picnic is at the Lake Community Center on August 12, 10:30 set up time. SEE YOU THERE. Carlene
Membership form-
-is included in the newsletter as well as on line at our website wwwniqg.org.
Please fill out and include $20. This is due at the August or September meetings. Or if you prefer, you may mail them to Kelsey Jones – 232 5th N W Mason City, Iowa 50401. Please write ‘membership form’ clearly on envelope. You may also drop them off at my home or mail them to me, Jenny Schlutz. My address is 1468 2nd S E Mason City, Iowa 50401.
Newsletter information
Deadline for any news that you would like put in the newsletter is the 23rd of each month. All are welcome to submit any sewing related news articles to me, however if there is a copy right to it and permission has not been received to reprint, it will not be published. If the article is something that you have originally written and I have your permission to print it, it will appear in a near future newsletter according to space. If you would like to advertise to sell an item such as a sewing machine, sewing table or any other sewing related item you may do so at a small fee. Call me if you are interested.
Due to the economy we are trying to save money for our guild. You all need to tell me whether you would prefer to receive the newsletter as a hard copy, e-mail or just read it on our website.
-This is what will happen: if you wish to receive the newsletter by snail mail you will need to bring with you to the August or September meetings, 12 self addressed and stamped envelopes. You must also have your membership paid. You will receive the entire newsletter as it is intended. Patterns included (with permission).
-If you prefer it by e-mail it will be delivered as a ‘pdf’ which means you can print it out as if you received it directly from me. But to get the patterns you will be given a link. Remember I also would have to have your e-mail address.
-or simply log on to our website and you will see an edited version. What this means is that you will not see any the treasury report or any other significant information that is not for nonmembers. You will not see any patterns unless you are a member and have the password.
If I do not get envelopes from you and you have not indicated that you prefer e-mail I will assume that you will be reading it on our website. You will have until the October newsletter is ready to send, to let me know. I have heard from several of you already. I appreciate you telling me so that I can be better organized. Jenny
