Embroidery Ribbon Quilting
By Lola Stiles
Come join us at 9AM for a fun adventure to learn making Embroidery Ribbon Quilts! Lola has the most beautiful quilt made in this fashion! She will guide us in creating several flowers to add to our own quilts. Lola will have kits available for $4 each. Everything you need will be included in your kit except sharp scissors. If you prefer to bring your own ribbons and background to work on, you may do so. See you all there!

Hostesses
For April are: Group 3-
Margaret McMullin, Jo Ann Johnson, Nancy Trager, Janice Pralle
Lola Stiles & Margaret Hanawalt

Potluck at noon with general meeting at 1PM
It has been suggested to bring a container with you to help out with left-overs.
Not everyone wants to take home their dish and eat it for several days.
A great way to enjoy our wonderful potlucks twice!

Since there will be no Bingo at our annual August picnic, (we will be revealing our Naughty Rows and taking pictures of them) this year, the Afternoon program will be Bingo! There will be nice door prizes for the winners! We will play till prizes gone! You don’t want to miss out!

Kay Klukow! Her grandchildren were the two that hit each other head on last month near their home. Her granddaughter and grandson are healing. We send our good vibes their way and wishes of a speedy recovery. We wish Kay peace and good will.

Newsletter
Note: a larger font is going to be used from now on. I am finding it harder and harder to read the ‘small stuff’ as time goes by. I hope this is helpful to all of you. It sure helps me. You know I officially become a ‘Senior Citizen’ this summer! Tri-focals here I come!
With the economy continuing to be stressful on our pocket books we need to make changes to help keep the costs of our newsletter at a minimum. For those of you who have computers, we want you to be thinking of receiving the newsletter by e-mail, starting next quilt year in August. If you choose to do so you will still be able to receive patterns via a ‘link’ that will appear in your e-newsletter. You will also be able to print your all/or parts of your e-newsletter each month.
For those of you who still wish to receive the newsletter by ‘snail mail’ you are certainly welcome to do so. I will need 12 self addressed and stamped envelopes from you by August or September meeting. We want everyone to know what is going on and not miss a thing! We have some fun programs and workshops being worked on now for next year!
If you do not wish to receive your newsletter in either fashion you can read it on our North Iowa Quilters Guild website at niqg.org. However you will not be able to see certain items such as our Treasurer’s report. The choice is up to you. Please let me know by August Picnic or no later than September. Thank you everyone for your cooperation! Jenny
Ps-some of you got a test newsletter last month from me. Kelsey is teaching me how to get these to you in pdf style which is easier for you to work with. Please note that the treasurer’s report is for members only and will never be on our website for the world to see.

Chinese Auction
The Chinese Auction had been going on for 2 years now. We wish to thank everyone who has donated the many items! $30.25 has been added for a total of total of $782.15! Thanks to everyone! This has been an enjoyable fund raiser!

Lottery block!
The lottery block this month is a simple Nine Patch. Just cut nine 3 ½” squares and sew them together! These blocks would make a great scrappy quilt!

Comfort Quilt blocks
Cut out at least a 13” background, appliqué a heart shape using your favorite method and trim down to 12 ½”. Make as many as you would like. Give these to Carlene Davis or better yet if you make at least 12 heart blocks you could put an alternating 12 ½” plain print block with them, add a border and sew them together for her. If you don’t have that heart template make your own! Hearts come in all flavors and sizes! Thank you to everyone as we bring comfort to our members who are our friends.

2010 Raffle Quilt- Cabin Lights
The raffle quilt is being machined quilted by Marion Enabnit from Clear Lake. We should have it back by April meeting or shortly thereafter.

Board Meeting will be held on April 21th, 2009 at the Senior Center in Mason.
All NIQG members are welcome to attend any meetings.

2009 Naughty Row by Row Quilt- theme will be ‘HOME’
First round of the ‘theme home’ is in the bag! The second ‘coffee cup’ row should be done. The third row is ‘watering cans and the fourth is ‘tulips’. These should be completed. Next you will be handing your bag to the name listed for APRIL. The 5th pattern will be available for you to use or not to use! It is a HEART BLOCK! Remember to work on the project as if it were your own quilt. (Note: even though this is a ‘row by row’ doesn’t mean your row can’t be a column, or a square or round or whatever……..uh-oh…juices going?) NOTE: PLEASE MAKE ARRANGEMENTS WITH THE PERSON YOU ARE TO PASS YOUR BAG TO IF YOU CANNOT MAKE IT TO GUILD MEETING! It just isn’t fair to the person who has to wait and then hurry up her row. THANKS! Now go have some fun girls!

Hooked on Tuesday Quilters (HOTQ’S)
Everyone is invited to come on Tuesdays at the Senior Center to use the tables for sewing, basting quilts or just come and sit ‘n’ sew a project. There are tables raised for basting or cutting out quilts. There are sewing machines available to use along with rotary cutters and mats. It costs nothing to come. However if you plan on staying for lunch you must call at least one day ahead to get your name on the list for eating. They have really nice home cooked meals that are served Monday thru Friday. The costs of the meals are $3 or $3.50 or whatever you can afford. Very worthwhile! Plus it is a pleasant place to come visit with friends or if you need help with a project, there is sure to be someone there who can help you! Come any Tuesday!

2010 North Iowa Quilters Guild Quilt Show
The tentative dates will be April 17th and18th, or April 24th and 25th, 2010. Newman High is our best and least expensive place to hold our show.

Pinwheel pinks and darks along with pinks and brights quilts for twins, 2 snowman quilts, 2 tulip quilts and a very sassy ‘Cowgirls’ quilt that she made for her nephew. Betty Neel brought 2 very sweet Comfort Quilts! Carlene Davis finished the cutest Teddy Bear quilt that is done up in pastels! Nancy Malmin created some darling outfits for her granddaughter! Secretary Minutes March 11, 2009
The North Iowa Quilters Guild met at the Covenent Church on March 11, 2009. The morning workshop was Attic Window conducted by Kelsey Jones Evans. A delicious pot luck was enjoyed at noon. At 1:00PM Carlene Davis, president opened the meeting. the Secretary and Treasure’s reports were approved. It was noted the Lake Area Quilters Guild Show is entitled, ‘Today’s Quilts, Tomorrow’s Treasures.’ The show is April 18-19th.
Birthdays were announced. Happy Birthday to Nancy Malmin and Darlene Alexander. Guests were Pam Moeller and Connie Butler. Jo Best announced that the Clear Lake Park Room has been reserved for our annual August Picnic! Continued to next page
Cathy Knowles, program chairlady has asked for program to be arranged by the groups at least 6 months in advance. Kelsey requested that members with e-mail to consider receiving your newsletter in the new year beginning September, to let her or Jenny know. Next month Lola Stiles will give a morning workshop on embroidery flowers. Bring scissors. The kits will be $4.00.
Chinese auction was held, many nice items were won. Jenny Schlutz showed the progress of one member’s ‘Naughty Row by Row’. The tulips are next. The finished quilt should be fun.
The 2010 Raffle Quilt was shown. The quilt will be machined by Marion Enabnit and should be done by April meeting or May at the latest. The finished attic window blocks were shown and packets of blocks for the Breast Cancer Quilts were passed out for members to sew. We will be looking into more information on the Fair booth. Board minutes for March 17, 2009
The NIQG met at 10:00AM on March 17, 2009. 9 members were present. Secretary and Treasurer’s reports approved. The Board has agreed that for next year, as we have a smaller membership, the Secretary’s duties will be combined with Sunshine. The Treasurer’s duties will also be combined with Membership. A discussion of keeping Historian’s book was held to keep in an album as well as on the web site.
A motion was made by Jenny and seconded by Dorothy, motion carried, that Marion Enabnit from Clear Lake will machine quilt our 2010 Raffle Quilt for $120.00. Cathy stated that MS Designs of Texas will give a Free Quilt Pattern to hand out for everyone attending our quilt show. She also has an on line quilting school and would like to advertize the school. Cahty stated she needs the groups to get together and bring their ideas for programs to her 6 months in advance.
Many places were looked into for our Quilt Show. They were all too expensive for our club. The parking also was limited. Newman remains our best location. We will need many quilts for the show. We will need to get busy making our quilts to show. Possibility of getting more vendors. The Linus Project is no longer in service in our area. We will make quilt for children who need them on our own. This project will be called, ‘Children’s Comfort Quilts’. Area agencies have been contacted to find out the best way to distribute these quilts. Jenny has requested to make fewer newsletters (45) at $26.49. this will be a reduction in expenses of $141.00 a year. Moition made to pass by Marlene and seconded by Kelsey. Motion carried. Motion made to adjourn by Ruth with Norma Jean seconding. Motion carried.

Quotes
A true friend is somebody who can make us do what we can. Ralph Waldo Emerson

Friendships multiply joys and divide griefs. Henry George Bohn

The only way to have a true friend is to be one. Ralph Waldo Emerson

So oft; to the house of thy friend, for weeds choke up the unused path. Shakespeare

He who sows courtersy, reaps friendship and he who plants kindness, gathers love. Unknown

Note from President and Quilt Show Chair: Upcoming president, Jenny, and her nominating committee have done a good job with the slate of officers for this next year. As you will note in the minutes of the Board meeting, due to the decline in membership, the Board has approved combining the Sunshine Lady with the Secretary's position and the membership with that of Treasurer. The combining of the positions will be on a trial basis this year and if successful, the By-laws will be amended to reflect the changes before the election of 2010. The raffle quilt will be ready for display, hopefully by this meeting. The quilt show committee would like everyone to start thinking of events that we could sell raffle tickets at, along with displaying the quilt.
With less members than previous years, we will all need to work a little harder to have a successful show and one way to get free advertisement is to get the quilt out into the communities and sell those tickets. That way everyone will have a reminder to come to the show. So if your town is having a summer activity, contact the committee in charge to see if displaying the quilt and selling tickets can be a part of that activity. We will need to begin to get our committees together for the different duties that will be needed to make this a memorable show, not only for the attendees, but the members also. We had a great and well attended workshop in February. It was a lot of fun and we had a good time; however, I think we need to remember that we are meeting in a church, but most importantly, there is a pre-school right down the hall. Our fun can be a little overwhelming when bad language is included. Carlene Davis

Boys will be boys…
I received a text a week ago from my oldest daughter Kari. It was about my Grandson Alex, who just turned 5 years old.
He was in the kitchen, crying big alligator tears on Sunday morning. Kari immediately went out to see what was going on. There he was holding a pair of scissors, crying really loud now. She thought he had hurt himself! As she was questioning him to see what was wrong and going over his whole body, she held his face to her and said “where are you hurt?” He said I am not hurt. Kari looked surprised and said what?
With saddest big eyes he says to his Mommy…”Mommy, I cut off Tigger’s whiskers!” Tigger is the family cat who is 11 years old…She looked at Tigger (who was mildly watching the events with some interest),and she saw that “Tigs’ had one long white whisker left…It took every ounce of ‘Motherhood’ to keep from laughing. Alex knew he was in trouble immediately after cutting off Tigger’s whiskers and started crying right away. Well after Kari composed herself and they had a little talk about how he could have hurt her or himself she made him apologize to Tigger and promise to never do it again.
That is when I received the text ‘Alex cut off Tigger’s whiskers!’ After I changed my ‘undies’ from laughing so hard, I had to call her right away. She sent a picture of Tigger to Jessie’s phone. She looks like a real dork now with one long white whisker! You gotta love em!
