Show and tell!
Ruth Ward brought a lovely sampler made up of lottery blocks and past patterns that were offered. Darlene Alexander whipped up 2 table runners done in Patriotic colors! Barb Deboer showed off her country styled Star Crossings which she got out of a magazine and displayed a paper pieced birds quilt. That looks pretty neat to us ‘non paper piecers’! Marlene Oswood showed her block of the month from JoAnn’s Fabrics Store. She also showed us her round Twisted Star Table topper. Florence Hagstrom wowed us with her Wool Flowers that was a workshop that she had taken from the Calico Hutch in Minnesota. Our Southern Belle Marie Senne was busy this past month bringing with her purses that she made for her daughters, a small quilt with left over fabric and her large block of the month, Lewis and Clark quilt that was a kit. Bev Adams had her Brown Baggers quilt and a very pretty stain glass quilt with a flower as the main subject. Jenny showed here Brown Baggers wall hanging done up in dark earthy tones. If anyone has been omitted please accept our apologies. You can view the quilts on line at http://www.niqg.org/

Our sympathies to Phyllis Wright on the passing of her brother Junior ‘Bud’ Menke April 5, 2006.

Welcome to Kelsey’s Korner!
One of the things that we hear constantly from our quilt instructors is to document our quilt. To do this we make a label for the back of the quilt. The minimum of information needed for the label is as follows:
  • The name of the quilt or pattern
  • If it is a commercial pattern ad the name of the company or pattern creator.
  • The name of the quilt maker.
  • The name of the quilter if different than the maker.
  • Date the quilt was completed.
  • If you want to and have room you can add whom you made the quilt for and why.

You can use your computer printer to make labels or print photos on cloth (yes, I know most of you knew that!).

  1. Cut fabric pieces 8.5” wide by 11 (or 12) long to fit your printer.
  2. Add the same size of freezer paper to the wrong side of the fabric with a hot iron for just a few seconds (any longer melts the wax into the fabric and the paper will come off).
  3. Print the desired label or photo onto the fabric.
  4. Spray printed fabric lightly with white vinegar and water mix (about 50/50 solution).
  5. Press with hot iron to set (now you want to press it for a good 10 – 20 seconds).
  6. You can use a piece of muslin as a pressing cloth.
  7. The combination of vinegar (remember we use vinegar to set fabric dyes) and heat and melted wax from the freezer paper makes this ink pretty permanent. As always I suggest testing before sewing these onto a quilt that will be washed. Use your imagination and look for computer graphics that will enhance your labels. Even pictures of the person you give it to made a great addition to the label!
To make this easier you can purchase ready made labels and use a Micron Archival Ink Pen to write your information onto the label. Another method is to create a label with rubber stamps and archival ink to color in and write information. Always use permanent cloth ink and heat set the label. And yet a third method is to use your computer to create labels on already prepared fabric (You can purchase the fabric in sheets already prepared or prepare fabric your self. See hints on back of booklet.).

The newest method of documenting your quilt (listen up because this is hot off the press!) is micro chipping your quilt. Yes you can put a microchip the size of a grain of rice into the batting of your quilt and the quilt will be documented forever. The chip is encased in glass so that the quilt can be safely washed without damaging the microchip. For more information see the April 2006 issue of Quilter’s World or go to http://www.chippedquilts.com/.

This is great if we happen to know whom the quilt maker is, then we can piece the history of that quilt. But what happens if you have inherited a quilt from great aunt Bessie whom you have never met and do not know anything about her?

Now there may be an answer, at least for more contemporary quilts. The Alliance for American Quilts has created a network of volunteers that are interviewing quilters and including a picture of the quilter with a quilt. These interviews are transcribed and added to the website archives. These archives are searchable by quilter’s name, interviewer’s name, transcriber’s name, area quilter is from, or project name.
Now it is easy to take great aunt Bessie’s name and search for her interview and learn about her. Your quilt now has a documented history. What a great way to ad some historical significance to a quilt that you want to share with your family and your descendants.
How important can this format be for the quilting community? The answer is simple. “Quilts tell stories-they illustrate the history of this country. Quilts express love and sorrow-they link generations together. Quilts are community-people gather to make them and experience them. Quilts are art-these beautiful objects raise our spirits. Quilts teach-they are tools for learning about the world-they've even been used to teach math! Twenty million Americans today are involved in quilt making. Quilts matter!
Because Quilts matter, The Alliance for American Quilts, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization since 1993, brings together quilt makers and designers, the quilt industry, quilt scholars and teachers, and quilt collectors in the cause of documenting, preserving, and sharing our great American quilt heritage. We are committed to collecting the rich stories that historic and contemporary quilts tell about the nation's diverse people and communities.”
We want each and every quilt that survives the next hundred years to speak to those who love our work. How often have you looked at a quilt created during the Civil War and wondered about the person who made it? We want the museum that it resides in to say, “Yes we have the history of the quilt-maker, we know who she is.”
How likely is great aunt Bessie to be interviewed? Right now, the likelihood of great aunt Bessie having been interviewed is slim. However, more and more interviews are being posted weekly. You can help by visiting the web site at: http://www.centerforthequilt.org/ and becoming a member, volunteering to become an interviewer or just letting them know that you want to support their efforts in any way you can.

Jenny says: A special thank you to everyone who helped in the Boutique with setting up and take down. I also wish to say thank you for helping man the boutique. Thanks to everyone who donated items for sale. Also wanted to thank sellers for giving the NIQG, 5% of their sales. Also a big Thank you to those who voted my quilt Best in Show! That was a very nice surprise!
A big thanks to Vivian Bugbee for providing us with wonderful music. It made everyone kick up their heels dancing and singing along! You are so talented Vivien! Carlene says: I would like to thank everyone involved with our 2006 Quilt Show. I believe that it was a success and that everybody enjoyed seeing the quilts. I also believe that, with over 260 quilts exhibited, this was one of the largest shows we have held. I also want to thank the Beehive Quilt Shop and Maggie's for their providing the television advertising, along with Sign Pro for the signs that were available around the area. There were many more companies and individual members, too numerous to mention here, who provided the many door prizes and I know that our attendees all appreciated receiving them. We had a lot of fun shopping with our vendors and I hope they'll be interested in returning in 2008. And now, that the 2006 show is history, we need to think about the future and start planning for 2008. Put your thinking caps on, look at your quilting magazines and books for the next raffle quilt. We need to get started on it if we want to get it out to various locations so sell the tickets that fund our programs for the next two years. Be sure to check out our website next month, as Kelsey will have the quilts on display. She managed to get wonderful pictures and create a virtual slideshow that will blow your minds. Take a peek and if it isn't on there the first time, check again. Remember the website is http://www.niqg.org/. Members can get the Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting (new or renewal) at $15.00 by going thru the guild. That’s a savings of 60% from the newsstand price. Check with the treasurer.Remember members to sign up for the Fair in July. We'll be voting this month with the new members taking office after the June meeting. Please say yes! Minnesota Quilt Show, St. Cloud, Minnesota Bus TripDestination Travel Services, is still taking reservations for the trip until May 19. At that time, they will make a decision as to whether there will be a trip. The cost is $50 and they need at least 25 people to make the trip.
