Mighty Tote (or Green Tote)
By Holly from Saintly Stitches
With more and more stores encouraging you to bring your own grocery or shopping bags to help our environment, this bag is for you! Did you know that most grocery stores in California ban plastic or paper sacks! The trend is picking up in several states. And the plastic bags are so dangerous to our environment that the seas are full of them killing thousands of marine life! That it takes thousands of years to disintegrate, if they will at all.
They're ubiquitous. They accompany us home each time we shop. They swirl about our oceans, they cling to our trees, they drift down our city sidewalks, they adorn metal fences, they're consumed by animals. They are ‘an urban tumbleweed’.
Each year across the world some 500 billion plastic bags are used, and only a tiny fraction of them are recycled. Most of them will have a short lifetime with a consumer -- they'll be used for the few minutes it takes to get from the store to home and then they're thrown away.
Time to make a reusable and smartly designed tote! Everyone will ask ‘where did you get it’!
This wonderful Tote is a great versatile bag to use for hauling your project supplies to quilting classes, carrying your purchases at quilt shows or for your regular shopping in town. The tote has many pockets, straps to hold objects and a sturdy bottom to help keep everything in its place and give it shape. The Mighty Tote will fold down easily for storage until you are ready to fill it!
The tote comes in two different styles! Holly will offer kits for the Mighty Tote Bag in both styles. The kits will include: Mighty Tote Pattern, about 3 yards of fabric, tote inside bottom base, batting for handles and anything extra that may be needed. The costs of the kits are, about $20-$28 depending on which kit you choose. The more expensive kit has directional fabrics and therefore takes more fabric. There is no fee for this class other than the purchase of your kit/pattern.
Come have fun and create the Mighty Tote for yourself and make them as a Christmas present/s for your loved ones. ‘Create a Mighty Tote that can be used in many ways’!

Potluck will be at Noon with a general meeting at 1PM
Afternoon program will be Holly showing samples of the
Mighty Tote and showing us what is new in her shop!

Sympathy
We have lost a very good quilting friend this past Monday Sept 22, 2008. Jan Martin lost her battle with cancer. She will be greatly missed as she always brought her wonderful sense of humor and laughter to the workshops and meetings. She never wavered, when she ‘flubbed’ a block on a project, she would just say “Oh well it’ll add character!” and seemed to always managed to make a work of art in her quilts. Our sympathies to Laurie Schwarck and her family and friends.

2009 Naughty Row by Row Quilt- theme will be ‘HOME’

Fifteen of the most ‘charming’ and ‘nice’ girls will become absolutely ‘naughty girls’ by the end of June 2009! They will be participating in making a Naughty Row by Row quilt.
It’s not too late to sign up for some fun and maybe win a prize! November is deadline!

Row Quilt Rules
Each month you will do ONE row of a quilt following the theme set for that month. The first month YOU will be working on the row for YOUR quilt. After that you will be adding a row to another group member’s quilt. In the end in June 09, you will have 7 rows of a quilt ready to put together. Each row will have been made by a different member of the group, with the first one of them being you. Each of the group members will also have 7 rows to put together into a quilt, with a row by each member including you.

The monthly themes will be associated with HOME. Patterns will be available for that month. December meeting will be the beginning of a 7 Row Quilt! You will receive your brown bag to keep your goodies in at this time. This bag will have your name at the top with names following to be passed to each month. You must bring your bag with your completed first row in January 2009! No excuses. If you can’t bring it to guild make sure your bag gets to the next person. It is not fair for the next ‘Naughty Girl’ to get her bag late!

FABRICS in your bag: You will make your first row of blocks using your colors and/or theme fabric. For the entire quilt, you will want at least 3-4 yards of background fabric. This can be one piece or a bunch of fat quarters to add up to that amount. For rest of quilt you will need approximately 3-4 yards total of various colors that you want into your quilt top. It doesn’t hurt to put extra in your bag. Just remember that the ‘sweet and lovely’ person who has your bag may be naughty and add their own special touch and may not use your fabric for part of that row. Who knows what will happen.

The person, who does the first row of the quilt, is the quilt owner. You set the look and feel for the quilt with that first row using your fabrics. You can use the pattern provided or do your own thing, BUT You must make at least one block- wrong, upside down, sideways, impossible color or a completely make a different block for that row. Remember this is a Naughty Row by Row! Pin your name to row.

Your row should be not less than 40 inches wide & no more than 54 inches wide. It should not be less than 4” high or deeper than 12”. This goes for all rows!

If you have embellishments, think about if they will interfere with quilting it. If they will, put them in a ziplock baggie, for the row owner to add after the quilting is done. Be sure to mark the bag for what row they are to be used on.

Do NOT attach your row to the previous. The rows must remain separated. When all seven rows are completed, and returned to the row quilter owner, she will then assemble the rows into a quilt, using sashing or whatever method she wants to join them together into a quilt. The plan is to show the completed tops/quilts at the August Picnic 2009 and September 2009 guild meeting. PRIZES PRIZES PRIZES! In September we will have a contest on whose quilt was the ‘most naughty’. To qualify for prizes you must have your quilt top together! We will decided later if it needs to be quilted to qualify for prizes.

Hopefully these will be shown as a group in our Quilt Show 2010.
Treat each quilt with respect, keeping it in a clean, dry and safe place. Keep away from direct sunlight, pets and tobacco smoke.
If adding to the row using your own fabrics please use only 100% quality cotton fabrics, nothing with a loose weave and no cotton polyester blends.
And please remember the GOLDEN RULE OF QUILTING: Work on another’s quilt like you would your own! And do not show the owner her rows!
Above all! Have fun and let your imagination run wild!
(These rules will be repeated one more time next month and then will be included with first pattern and your brown bag.)

2010 Raffle Quilt- Cabin Lights
Also included in newsletter flyer is a picture of our 2010 raffle quilt. Due to inevitable circumstances the raffle quilt has been changed to ‘Cabin Lights’. This quilt includes 200 easy blocks and many hands will be needed to make the blocks. It will be color coordinated and kits will be available for members to take home and sew together. Please say yes to Betty and Margaret when asked to make the blocks! Margaret M wishes to apologize for any inconveniences.

Where does a UFO start? -It starts out as a WHIM (Work hidden in my mind). -After a FART (Fabric acquisition Road Trip) and some
-SEX (Stash enhancing experience) it becomes a PIG (Project in a Grocery Sack) -The PIG becomes a HSY (pronounced hissy...means haven't started yet). -Once you have a HSY fit and begin work, it becomes a WIP (work in progress) -The WIP becomes a UFO (Unfulfilled Opportunity, I like that better than Un finished object which sounds so negative) as soon as some other project grabs and holds your attention more than the project that was a WIP. Forget me not by Esther J. White
This quilt behind me I will leave,
When I am in my silent grave,
That my dear friends may view it o’re
And think of me when I’m no more.

Esther obviously believed that all quilts should not just have a signature on them but a short story as well. It is important for future owners of your quilts to know as much about you as possible. With the wonderful pens available these days it is much easier to add that bit about yourself. Please take time to add your life to your quilts. Even if it is only to tell of what was happening in your life during the actual quilt making. By adding this history it will not only enhance your quilts but make them more valuable as well.

(I found this poem in the booklet, ‘Signing and Dating Your Quilts’ by Susan McKelvey 1990.)

Charity Quilts
If you took a charity quilt home with you in June please bring it with you. If you have made a charity quilt or two bring those with you too! Thanks Girls!

Tips for quilting---
-When you are making 1/2 square triangles always sew a SCANT 1/4 inch (rather than a regular 1/4 inch) from the center diagonal line so that the fabric will have a bit more room to flip over when you press it. Most times you can cut your initial squares a FULL 1 inch larger (rather than the standard 7/8 inch) and then just trim them down to the finished size + 1/2 inch for the seams allowances. Easier 'math' and better to be too big and trim down, than to end up being too small.
-when making miniature quilts, hang them without damaging the walls is buy using Poster Tape _ available where regular scotch tape is sold. You use it on painted walls and wallpaper. I am always changing my quilts throughout the year and rearranging so this is the best way to hang them.
-When washing your material to test for coloring fastness.....put in a plain piece of muslin.....even if the water turns color it doesn't mean that the dye will run.....but, if the muslins picks up the color then you will know that it will attach itself to other fabric.
-Metal picnic table clamps work well to clamp quilt backings to the table when layering backing, batting and quilt top for basting. If you can't find them, try carpenters wood clamps or bull dog clamps from the office supply store.
-To separate embroidery floss without tangling: Cut whatever length of floss you need. All six strands. With your left hand, hold the strands t the top. With your right hand, separate just the top of one strand. Now with your right hand holding the one strand at the top, squeeze your two fingers on left hand holding the remaining five strands. Pull the one strand out keeping your fingers kind of tight on the other and it should slide right out.
-If you can’t be kind, be vague.
-Gray thread is a great neutral color for piecing. Take the time to clean the lint from the screens the hoses and vents for your dryer, even if you have to get a helper do do it for you. This is a VERY common cause of house fires.
-Buy a pair of men’s support hose from any discount store. Cut the tops off at the beginning of the heel and fold the long cuff over in two for a perfect support for your wrists while playing/working at the computer!
When sewing together a block with a lot of pieces use removable stickers or Post-It notes to number the pieces.
-Donate that UFO you are never going to finish
-Before you sew on your quilt label, tuck some fabric scraps from the quilt between the label and the quilt then stitch your label on. This way, the fabric scraps get relatively the same amount of wear and tear and washing as the rest of the quilt so you will always have the perfect repair fabrics right with the quilt if ever needed.
-Learn from the mistakes of others. You can't live long enough to make them all yourself.
-Does your back ache after a cutting session on a too low table? Raise it by using Bed Risers, available in most Bed and Bath stores.

September workshop by the Delightful Denise Sprain
Quilts on the Double by Judy Hooworth & Margaret Rolfe
Free workshop!
4 samples were shown at the August picnic in two color ways of blues and autumn! They were awesome! As the name applies, ‘Quilts on the Double’ you will get 2 quilts out of the strip sets we will be making. Stripes are especially fun in this quilt. It seems every group of fabric has as stripe with it. This will be a chance to use a stripe as more than the bias binding.
If getting stripes, look at how the stripes are printed on the fabric. If they run parallel with selvage you will need to buy 5/8 yd of fabric instead of the fat quarter if you want the stripe to run vertically. If the look you are after is a horizontal stripe then use the Fat Quarter. Some of the stripes are printed across the width of the fabric, Lakehouse stripes are printed this way, then the fat quarter will work. Denise will provide books and quarter square triangle rulers for the class. She also has kits available of the quilts shown in both color ways at picnic! To order yours ahead of time call 1-800-238-1902.
There is no charge for class! Please come join us for a fun morning of sewing and good cheer! We will have potluck at noon and at one pm. We will have a short meeting and the afternoon program will be presented by Denise to show us what is new in the shop. Bring your checkbook girls! She will bring items for sale too!
Things you will need: you will need the usual basic supplies and if you have a Quarter Square Triangle ruler you will not have to cut a template. A 6” square ruler will work too.

6 fat quarters another color that contrasts with above
1 7/8 yard of contrast-must really contrast with the above 2 colors

1 7/8 yards of accent color-this needs to contrast with the 2 colors you are using for the eighths.
Borders
Tops quilts

3/8 yard stripe for fist border
2/3 yard for binding

The treasurer’s report was given by Mary Ruth Calland. Quilt show final report was income-$3, 697.1- with expenses- $2,418.28 with profit of $1,278.73. For the next quilt show we will need to find ways to make more income to pay for 2 years of programs and expenses. The next board meeting we will discuss ways to update our show. Possibly more vendors. We also talked about increasing the vendor’s fee. Boutique items will be made by member to sell for extra income. Bring your ideas to make more income.
Kelsey made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s report-seconded by Jeanne. Motion carried. Marilyn Meinecke requested we give 2 quilts to 2 young children. We will give their names to Deb Wolf. Motion made to adjourn.

Lottery block!
The lottery block this month is ‘Oh Susannah’. In honor of September apples use red and tans for your colors.
Make as many as you want. The more you make the better chance of winning all of them.

Mystery Quilt 2009! The finished size is 72” x 72” PART ONE
You can make this Mystery Quilt larger by adding more borders in the end! Here is the first installment of our Mystery Quilt 2009!
First thing is to decide on a color scheme. You will choose a main color in different values from dark to medium-light prints, a medium print accent color, and a light print (this will be background and borders) that sets off your other choices. You can make it scrappy or color coordinated. Choose fabrics that are not large scale print, such as big flowers and etc. stripes may make it interesting but may be harder to incorporate later. If you wish to make the quilt larger you should purchase those fabrics now so that it all will go together.
Dark: 3/8 yard
Medium/dark: 3/8 yard
Medium: 2 ½ yards
Medium/light: ½ yard
Accent: 1 ¼ yards
Light: 5 ½ yards
Border alternative: if you prefer a darker frame for the light background center of your quilt you will need 3 ½ yards of a light/medium

I will bring you samples of what I have picked out for my quilt. I plan to make mine scrappy. In the October newsletter you will receive the next instructions. We should have our quilt done by April or May.

Naughty Row by Row
Oooooohhhhhhhhhh now what is this! If anyone is interested in creating a fun and crazy Naughty Row by Row please let me know. There will be specific rules that have to be followed. Followed? Well if it is ‘naughty’ maybe not… if we have enough participants we will get this going by November or December. There will be a sign up sheet to those interested. You must be committed if you start this project. No drop outs or excuses!

Elephant Stew
1 elephant salt and pepper
Brown gravy 2 rabbits (optional)

Cut elephant into bite-sized pieces (this will take about 4 months). Cook over kerosene at 525 degrees until tender (about 5 months). Add salt and pepper and cover with brown gravy. This will serve 3,800 people. If more are expected, add 2 rabbits. Do this if only absolutely necessary as most people do not like hare in their stew.

A couple of Tips
Instead of using the tips of your scissors or seam ripper or anything metal while guiding your fabric close to the needle, use a bamboo skewer. If you accidently hit the skewer with the needle, the potential for damage is small: at the most you will break the skewer and your needle. If you hit the metal seam ripper or scissors you may damage your machine.

Break a machine needle? Place all pieces onto masking tape and fold over edges to secure before discarding.
Make pillow cases with fabrics you know you will never use and donate to shelters.
Tea Dyeing Cotton Fabrics
You can give your quilts an old fashioned look by naturally Tea Dyeing them. Assuming your quilts are made of 100% cotton this will work great. If you have blends in your quilts you may have unpredictable results. So be sure what your quilts are made of. Using cotton batting also will give you the look of antiques. It will give you a flatter feel and shrink slightly in the dryer.
You can do this in a large tub or your washer machine.
Add 16 tea bags per 1 gallon of warm water and steep for about 20 minutes. Take out the bags and stir well. Place your quilt into tea water and gently agitate by hand making sure entire quilt covered. Check every 5 minutes and give a stir until you have reached desired color. The fabrics will dry lighter than it appears while wet. This should take about 10- 35 minutes depending on the look you want.
When ready, remove the quilt and gently squeeze out excess water. If the fabric has stained too dark for your tastes, rinse in clean water to get rid of some of the tea. Place quilt in the low heat dryer with a damp towel. This will help to absorb any leftover tea. Take out while warm and shake gently. Be sure to rinse your washer machine when done. You wouldn’t want to dye your favorite work shirt.
Another way to Tea Dye your quilts, is to:
First steep the tea in a cup. Then open the tea bag into a dish. Dip your brush into the tea and dampen fabric where desired. Next dip the brush into the tea grains and rub them into the fabric. Dampen the fabric again with tea, wiping away tea grains as you work. Allow the project to dry in a well ventilated area.

Tips for marking your quilts
Slivers of soap are great for marking quilting lines. Ivory seems to work best.
Keep old nylon knee highs nearby. They are excellent for removing chalk markings. They are also good for removing deodorant mishaps on your clothing.
Before marking squares for half-square triangles, put a small dot on the corners, then align your ruler and mark.
I keep a mug in my sewing room, along with a tooth brush. I put water in the cup use the brush to dab & remove blue marker marks on my fabric. Works much better than spraying water, and you can put the water just where you want it
Instead of using a plate, saucer or cup to trace around for curves on the edges, use a CD. There are lots of free ones available for connecting to ISPs. The CD is also very easy to store.
I use regular chalk, all colors. I sharpen them and use them when I do free hand designs for marking my quilt. The chalk is great and brushes away when done.
When you need to sharpen the tip of your marking pencil, just sharpen it on some sandpaper. If you put the pencil in your sharpener it often breaks this way only the tip is sharpened.
To audition grid or template quilting patterns, mark them on a portion of your quilt with a hera (a Japanese marking tool made of hard plastic). The hera marks by pressure only and can be erased by simply pressing the marked area with an iron.Note: to find out more about this tool located an online source for it here:http://www.thecalicocat.com/notions-markingtools.htm
Use the new Glad Press and Seal to embroider words or designs on your quilt. Draw on the Press and Seal, stick to quilt and embroider. Tear away when done. Does not leave any residue and you have no marks on your quilt to remove.
Keep a piece of sandpaper on a clipboard, with a thin ruler and mechanical pencil near your sewing machine. When it's time to mark the diagonals for half-square triangles, place the squares on the sandpaper, so they don't move around when you mark.

July 9, 2008

Well ladies it certainly has been an interesting year so far, in regards to the weather. Many of us experienced unhappy situations with all the flooding that had occurred. The North Iowa Quilters Guild hopes and prays that all of you come out of it with the least damage as possible. One of our members lost 80 yards of fabric but was able to save her sewing machines! We need a good summer with lots of sunshine and machines purring right along at high speed! Please keep making charity quilts as there is always a need. But be sure to make quilts for yourself too!
With the postponing of our Guild meeting to June 25th, due to the flooding events, we still were able to have a good and productive day. Mandy was not able to do the Trupunto class that day so the HOT Q’s put together several charity tops and backs on the Tuesday before meeting and brought them along with batting to be tied and sewn together. At meeting, we had some young energetic girls with us that day and being new to quilting were able to tie 5 quilts between them! We are thankful for their help! Future quilters in the making? For pictures of our quilting day visit us: http://niqg.spaces.live.com/
A couple of gals had their sewing machines going and sewed edges for us. Several gals were at the tying tables and finished many quilts. The quilts that needed binding and or other finishing were then taken home over the summer to bring back in August. Give yourselves a big pat on your backs Girls! You did well! Thank you!
Potluck as usual was really great! Man, can you Ladies cook! Our meeting was led by our President Kelsey. She presented Cathy Knowles with a thank you bag full of fabric for her services. Then Jo Best presented Nancy Jewel with our 1000th ABC quilt. The Globe Gazette was there and took pictures. This pictured appeared in the newspaper the next day with a nice article. (included in newsletter) Nancy was very emotional and very thankful to us for our generosity.
Then Carlene presented our 2008 Raffle quilt to the winner who is Carol Post from Manly! Carol was thrilled and said she is hanging it in a stairway off her living room! And would you believe that the colors of chocolate and sage and the Civil War colors are what are in her house! That quilt was made for her! It is going to be loved and cared for, for sure! Congratulations Carol!
Then on to the Auction of the Library books! What a hoot! Marie Senne did a wonderful job of cleaning out the books. With her bright spirit and her funny wit we were wondering if David Letterman was around! 23 ladies buying books at bargain prices all had huge grins on their faces! We ended up with $153.25 to be given to our Treasurer. Thank you Ladies and we hope to see many, many quilts made with your new stash of quilt books!
Luncheon finished up the day and I think we all had a great day! Even though we don’t meet in July everyone is welcome to come on Tuesdays to the Senior Center for sewing, good cheer and lunch! It is located at 326 4th N E in Mason City. It is a great place to sandwich your quilts and get lots of help. They serve very nutritious meals if you are interested too. Come and join us each week! Don’t forget the North Iowa Fair. Dixie needs your quilts!
Our next meeting will be in Clear Lake. It will be a potluck picnic and will be held in the down town City Park in an air-conditioned room behind the band shell. To be included in this list, please bring your payment and form soon. To receive your newsletter by snail mail, you must also bring 12 self addressed and STAMPED envelopes to me (Jenny). If you have extra envelopes with me already I will let you know with a note in your August newsletter so you will know how many to give me. I have rather a large bundle of extra envelopes from members that need to be used. You all have a good and healthy summer! Jenny
Chinese Auction
Chinese Auction will continue in September. If you have sewing related items or nice items that you think you would like to donate please give these to me (Jenny) as soon as you can. Please bundle magazines in groups of 12 or less. $659.40 has been collected in the last 1 ½ years for our guild. Thank you everyone for your generosity!

Aprons
I don't think our kids know what an apron is.The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears .From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that "old-time apron" that served so many purposes REMEMBER: Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.
They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don't think I ever caught anything from an Apron.

Thoughts….
Be happy! We all need to read this one over and over until it becomes part of who we are!
How to stay young: measure twice before cutting…
Be nice to quilters who may have a fabric you need…
Buy patterns and books: inspires you daily…
Spend lots of time with quilting friends laughing…
Keep healthy so that you can quilt with ease…
Visit quilt shows often: lots of good things there…
Forgive grumpy people: life is too short not to…

Tips
Use only clear plastic bags when transporting your quilts. It would be a sad day to accidently toss a quilt in the garbage! If you use white plastic bags clearly and in very large letters mark that bag with the contents! And only use plastic bags for short term use

Lost your favorite quilting thimble and can’t get to the shop? If you have an old thimble with a rounded top-place it on a secure surface, position a nail head on top and gently tap down. Should be a good temporary fix.

Store all your paper fusible in plastic bags and seal. This will help to keep the glue from drying out and separating from the paper!

Relax, stretch and clear your mind to keep healthy.

-darning foot

The sample shown above is called a ‘Shadow Trupunto’. To make this colorful you need to bring a Batiste fabric and brightly colored batik for underneath. You may want to audition the batik before you bring it to make sure the color will softly show through. To make a regular Trupunto you need to bring the muslin or light colored fabrics.
Mandy will bring a choice of two patterns for you to transfer at the workshop. Light tables will be available for your use.

From the President: This is my last “official” message as president as my term comes to an end. I want to thank all the board members and officers for their support this year. I know it has seemed a little rough as we got ourselves back on target with our by-laws. Speaking of which, the board will be presenting some updates to the by-laws to vote on. Take some time and look through them. Remember, what we vote on, we need to do. It has been a good year and I look forward to changes in focus as we acquire new members. Please make them welcome.

Kelsey Jones-Evans
