Come join us for an informative morning and a fun afternoon trunk show given by Connie Sue Haidle, designer for Apple Blossom Quilts from Webster City. She will show us unique ways to add to our knowledge of sewing abilities! No sewing machine needed for this workshop. General sewing supplies along with smiles, fellowship and the following ingredients are all you need!
To stitch split leavesEach student should bring the following:1 - 10" square background fabric1 - 6" square for appliqué - medium to dark fabric1 - 6" square for appliqué - light fabric#2 lead pencilAppliqué thread to match appliqué fabric (Suggested thread: Metler 60 wt. 100% cotton, Aurifil 50 wt. 100% cotton or YLI 100 wt. silk thread.† I'm always asked what I use so will tell you that I use YLI 100 wt. silk thread most of the time.)

Other things she will talk about and demonstrate are:
The Quick Prep way. Once again, the Quick Prep way makes stitching split leaves a snap.To make skinny stems the Quick Prep way. Stems "or narrower are do-able, and I’ll teach you how. Not only is it do-able. It is also fast and easy.To work on dark fabrics with ease. No more chalk that rubs off. I’ll show you how to use Glad Press ‘N’ Seal™ coupled with the Quick Prep Stitch to work with dark fabrics. ---Continued---To add embroider to your appliqué blocks the Quick Prep Way. Marking embroidery on an appliqué block is always difficult. The Quick Prep Way will eliminate pencil or chalk marks from the front of your block. To make perfect paper cuts and Hawaiian appliqué. Do your edges fray when working with paper cuts or Hawaiian appliqué? Use the Quick Prep Stitch and you can avoid the frayed edges. To make perfect circles WITHOUT starch. No more shinny, stiff berries and circles. My method will produce perfect, soft circles every time.To add bias stems made from Celtic bias bars to your appliqué. Do you like the convenience of stems made from Celtic bars but don’t like the thickness. I’ll show you a simple solution.

Potluck at noon with a general meeting starting at 1PM. Connie Sue will follow with a trunk show of her quilts. You can check out her website at appleblossomquilts.com to see her wonderful designs! See you all there in October!
Remember to contact Kim Sime if there is any news of members that needs to be shared. Perhaps there is a new baby in the family or someone receives an award, anniversaries or a death in the family has occurred. Please call Kim at 641-423-7727. We need to take care of each other!

Audit Committee
Kelsey Jones and LeNore Forbes have completed the audit of the monies for NIQG. We thank these ladies for their time and talents!

Fiber Arts Festival
After many years of chairing for the Fiber Arts Festival held in South Bridge Mall and the lack of interest, I am stepping down. In the past there were many other groups that sold crafty items along with us, selling quilted items. That’s why it was named FAF. This brought in many customers. But as time went on fewer and fewer crafters attended leaving only us in the mall for the last 6 or 7 years. As our guild changes and ages, there are fewer of us are making items for sale as well. So, if there is no one to take over, we thank South Bridge Mall for the many years of free tables for displaying items, the wonderful foods available (especially the cookies) and customers.
However, I have not informed the Mall yet of this decision as there may be a member or two who would like to try and sell their wares there under the name of NIQG for the Fiber Arts Festival. If there is anyone who is interested please contact me ASAP as I will be letting them know by Christmas that we will no longer be coming unless there is someone who wants to sell their sewing related items there. That way the Mall will have time to fill in that weekend. It is very simple to get a temporary tax form, I have the information you need for that. I wish to thank all ladies who have attended in the past as it was a fun experience! Jenny

Fonz and Porter Quilt Magazine
The Fonz and Porter magazine renewals have been sent in! Kelsey wishes to thank everyone for their renewals slips.

Hostessing for your month
There are a number of activities the hostesses must do to have a smoothly run workshop and meeting. The church is open by 8:15- 8:30 and most instructors will need that time to set up their display. You need to be available to help the instructors, and also to get the tables in the right configuration for the workshop. That way the workshop can start right at 9:00 to allow enough time for it.
That means the coffee must be started, cold drinks should be mixed. The ice is located in the machine in the closet next to the preschool. The coffeepot, ironing boards and tub of supplies to be used, are all in the preschool closet and must be brought out into the fellowship hall or kitchen. Beverages may need to be replenished for the luncheon. As hostesses you bring the desserts, centerpieces and anything special to be used for the afternoon luncheon, other members provide the potluck. One or two members in your group must man the welcome table to take care of Chinese auction tickets and other signup sheets and etc, and to welcome everyone coming in! It is very pleasant to be acknowledged when you arrive! After lunch, everybody needs to help clean up the kitchen, get their leftovers put together and basically, all that should be in the kitchen is the desserts for the afternoon luncheon. The hostesses must make sure that the kitchen is cleaned up by putting everything back in its proper location, making sure that the waste baskets are emptied into a large bag (under the counter along the back wall of the kitchen) and that bag taken to the dumpster. Garbage bags should be found in the kitchen closet. Paper towels are found beside that closet on an open shelf. As of right now the tables and chairs can be left out as there is an activity that evening. But please place the chairs with the tables and pick up any refuse under and around them. Thanks girls! Carlene
2010 Quilt Show
April 17th & 18th, 2010 Sat 10-4PM & Sun Noon -4
Newman High School $3 admissions
Friday April 16th at 4PM will be set up time.
Quilt Show meetings will be held at the guild meetings. Carlene will have signup sheets to work different areas. It may seem too early to do things for the show but it is not. Some things need to be done so that there is no confusion later. She will be expecting your input for ideas as well as working the show. It takes all of us to make the show successful. Please do what you can! We appreciate all your talents!
We have had many wonderful show and tell quilts. Be thinking of showing them and finishing up new projects. If you have a quilt or two that you haven’t shown please think about bringing it to the show. We and everyone else would love to see your quilts! It would be really nice to have the Blue Berry Hill quilts hanging together as well as the Naughty Row by Rows and Denise Sprain’s workshop of Tangy quilts too.
Everyone has such wonderful ideas when it comes to colors and you all certainly show your talents at our ‘show and tells’! You never know who you might inspire to become a quilter with all your talents out there for everyone to see! That’s what happened to me at your 1990 quilt show. Through much trial and a lot of errors and still learning, I became a quilter that day because of you and my Mom!
Raffle tickets are ready. All members are expected to purchase 10 tickets for $10. You may sell them or enter your name to win the ‘Cabin Lights’ quilt. Please help sell tickets at any events in your area. Money from the sales, funds the guild for 2 years.
Margaret McMullin and Betty Neel will handle the selling of tickets. Contact them for your tickets and also selling chances in different places. The raffle quilt was at South Bridge Mall, at Betty Neel’s week long rummage and will be going to Clear Lake guild soon as well as other surrounding guilds. Please say yes when Margaret or Betty ask for your help!

Memberships
Kelsey will have the new membership phone list ready for October meeting. Be sure to pay your dues ASAP so that you can be listed with other members. A creation of a member photo list next year is being discussed. It would be nice for new members to know who we are!

Revising the groups
Due to membership declines, we will be revising our groups from 9 groups to 5 groups. This means that there will be more members in your group to depend on. Some of the groups have 7 members and others have lost some due to non membership renewal. This new revision will become effective in September 2010. A signup sheet will be sent around with a chance for you to sign up yourself with a particular group of persons. This will be done perhaps in April 2010, so be thinking what months work best for you. Perhaps you are riding together with a group and it would be better to serve together that month. If you do not signup during this time I will be putting you into a group I think best fits that month. The months that no groups are needed are July-no meeting, August-picnic and December where the board and officers will take care of December. That means with 9 months, the groups will rotate during the year. Thanks to everyone for your understanding and cooperation!
Secretary’s Report by Kim Sime
NIQG General Meeting September 9, 2009
The general meeting of the NIQG was called to order by President Jenny Schlutz. The morning workshop was presented by Denise Sprain from Iowa Falls. We worked on the quilt pattern “A Little Tangy”. Denise will also be presenting our afternoon program, showing us what is new at the shop. It is always a delight to have Denise with us. The Treasurer’s report and Secretary’s minutes were approved as submitted. As a reminder, the Fiber Arts Festival will be Saturday, September 19 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at Southbridge Mall. The guild will be selling raffle tickets on that day. A few more volunteers are needed to help sell tickets. Kelsey has quilt raffle tickets available for members to purchase. Each member is asked to purchase a minimum of 10 tickets to sell to others or to enter the raffle themselves.
A thank-you was received from Gwen Matthews for all the prayers, visits, cards, and memorials with the passing of her husband.
The Quilt Show is April 17 – 18, 2010. Volunteers are needed to take the raffle quilt to various locations to show and sell tickets. Betty Neel and Margaret McMullin will coordinate this. The February 2010 morning workshop will be devoted to making items to sell in the boutique. Everyone is asked to be thinking of ideas. Jeanne M. has some ideas already but would like additional ideas. Jeanne reported that 5 vendors have already reserved space at the show. The gambling license will need to be renewed by November.
Jenny passed around silk thread from Thailand. Marie Senne will be presenting a program on the silk thread in the future. Since there is a conflict with the usual date, the Board meeting will be the 4th Tuesday of September. Membership cards are ready and may be picked up from Kelsey. $15.50 was raised with the Chinese Auction this month. Lucky winners were Nancy Malmin, Shelly Koran, Cathy Knowles, and Barb DeBoer. A door prize was donated by Holly Schimmelphenig from Saintly Stitches and that lucky winner was Shirley Schneider.
Shelly K. reminded everyone of the program, Quilting Treasures, to be held Oct. 3 at NIACC. She also shared with us information about the Koinonia Piecemakers. Everyone is welcome to join the group. The last day to renew the Fons & Porter subscriptions through the guild is today.
We saw some very nice projects during Show and Tell:
Jenny Schlutz – flannel quilt
Mary Ryerson – John Deere quilt
Carlene Davis – bag using sleeves from another project
Shelly Koran – “It Takes Two” quilt and bag
Joan Chandler – “Weather Vane” quilt
