It’s Picnic Time! We will meet in Clear Lake this year at City Park’s Lakeside
Community Room. This is behind the Band Shell located right down town next to lake. It is air conditioned! Board meeting will be at 10:30AM. You may come and visit at 11AM. Potluck Picnic at Noon! Bring a potluck to share. Bring Show and Tell! We are welcome to use the kitchen and facility. Everyone will be responsible to clean up before they go home. Carlene and I will bring drinks. You do not need to bring service wear. It will be provided for you. All you need for potluck is a dish to share.
If you wish to participate we will have a Pink Fat Quarter Lottery. The more Pink Fat Quarters you bring the better your chances to winning all of them! Perhaps you can make a pink charity quilt using the Woven Heart pattern found in the June newsletter for the Cure for Breast Cancer. If you have miss placed your pattern let me know. I have copies if you need them. Important: You can get the ‘parchment white’ background at the Bee Hive Quilt Shoppe in Mason City. Please bring your completed block/s by Sept. meeting. Thank you everyone who contributes.
Also if you wish to participate we will play a short game of Quilt Block Bingo where you can win a fat quarter! We will play till the Fats are gone. FLEA MARKET! Time to clean out those quilting rooms! Bring any sewing related items for sale! You can set up right away and sell, sell, sell! Keep Cool! Hope to see all of you there!

President Carlene Davis has a few words:
Here it is, another year gone by and we’ve accomplished and done a lot of good things. We’ve held a successful quilt show, had many good workshops, given many, many quilts to various charities, learned new ways to do things and had fun while doing it. Who said education is not a lot of fun.
I’ve had a good time being your president and now it’s time to move on and become a member on the other side of the table; although, I want to stress that this guild is made up of 75 members and each and every one is important to keep this guild operating. Thanks for everyone’s help in making this a great year.
See you at the August meeting. Remember, it’s being held in the Lakeside Community Room, Central Park, Clear Lake. Carlene Davis

Doris Kluss Raffle Quilt
Doris Kluss was a special quilter. She was extremely kind and a very skilled at quilting. She could take the most Gosh Awful fabric and create works of art! She also loved her 4 cats. A round robin quilt in the cat theme was in the works for Doris Kluss when she passed away July 2, 1996. It was finished by the members in the round robin project and kept at the North Center. Now with the North Center moved to the Senior Citizens Center there will not be a home for it. So it was decided to raffle it to a lucky member in our group. So far $100 and another $15 dollars just given to me has been bought in tickets. This money will go to the Treasury. The Lucky winner will be drawn at September meeting. Good luck ladies.

New Note: Some names have been switched to different groups in order to even the group numbers out. Please check to see what group you belong to. We still need some gals to help with the Christmas Party. Kelsey and I are creating a ‘make and take’ project for you. Can someone please volunteer! There will be at minimum $10 fee to attend workshops given by professionals not members. Thanks to all of you for participating to make the guild run smoothly!

Did you guess the answer to this riddle last month?
From the beginning of eternity,
To the end of time and space,
To the beginning of every end,
And the end of every place. What am I?
Answer is ‘E’. Oh don’t groan so loud!

A Pink Fat Quarter is the lottery in August. The more fats you bring the better your chances of winning all of them!
Mystery Quilt 2006-2007
An awesome and fun Mystery Quilt!
Clue number one: It is possible to make this quilt scrappy. However if you do make it scrappy you need to divide your colors that have a good contrast between them as follows: Light for the background-Medium/medium dark as the focus fabric and dark as the contrast. Make sure there is good contrast between background and the other two color ways.
You can make this quilt larger if you prefer.
Clue number two:
Yardage for quilt size 51” x 68” are as follows:
3 yards-light background
1 ¾ yards-main print-medium/medium dark
1 ¾ yards-accent fabric-dark
2 1/8 yards- optional border
1 yard binding
Note: Border and binding may be purchased after you’ve solved the mystery, but be aware that the same fabric may not be available at that time. You may bring your fabric for Show and Tell if you would like to, before starting the actual cutting.

Wool Flowers 2006-2007 27” x 36”
During this new quilt year you will receive 12 patterns to make a wool flower wall hanging or if you prefer you may make a table runner/s. If you want to make it with cotton fabric instead you certainly can. Kelsey Jones is making the patterns in 3-D using cotton. They can be made that way or simply appliqué using your favorite method for a flat block. Sue will be making the block samples that will be different in color. The blocks are made with a 9” background. I sewed mine with a black wool background and made it into a small wall hanging. You will see the samples each month for reference. Using wool and no edges to turn under this is a fast little quilt to make! I hand blanket stitched my flowers. You may machine if that works better for you. Pattern included in newsletter and is on the web site at: fushia.htm.

Challenge Quilt 2006-07 to begin in November!
We want you to keep your mind and fingers busy this coming winter, so…..We have a fun challenge for you all. I was visiting the website at That Patchwork Place and they had a really great idea for a challenge. It inspired me to improvise one up for us. I hope you will enjoy it.
I have a book that has 400 different blocks in it. It is divided into 4 sections. 20 min blocks, 15 min blocks, 10 min blocks and 5 min blocks. The instructions also come in 3 sizes- 6", 9" and 12". What I thought would be fun is that all who would like to participate, draw out a number (which would coincide with a particular block) and then make a quilt using only 12 blocks, in any of those 3 sizes and finish it by June 2007. You could make a small wall hanging or a large quilt. If you make a quilt using the 6” size that would be one category, 9” would be another category and the 12” size would be the 3rd category for voting. We would then display the quilts and everyone would vote for their favorite one in June. There would be one winner in each size. Hope you will all participate in this fun project. We will begin this one in November.
So the Mystery Quilt 2006-07, Wool Flowers 2006-2007 and the Challenge 2006-2007 will be our main projects for this quilt year from the pattern committee. We hope you will enjoy both quilt projects! Sue, Jenny and Kelsey

2008 Raffle Quilt Committee
WE NEED ONE!
The sooner we have a committee the easier it is to get a quilt design picked out and in the works. I know that we just had a quilt show but there is no sense in waiting until the last minute to get started. If you know of a quilt design that would work for a raffle quilt please bring your suggestions and a pattern too. We need to get permission to create the quilt as soon as possible. Ticket Sales is what funds the guild. With no sales we have no workshops or programs given by professionals. There are so many wonderful teachers out there it would be a shame if we don’t work together to bring them in.
So be thinking of teaming up with fellow members!
WE NEED YOU!
My X-Sister in Law, Judy, who I still consider my Sister, sent this lovely tribute about Grandma’s Apron. Hope you all enjoy it as much as I did!
Grandma's Apron The principle use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a holder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken-coop the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled it carried out the hulls. In the fall the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that "old-time apron" that served so many purposes.REMEMBER THIS? "Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughter's set theirs on the window sill to thaw."

Kelsey’s Korner
Well the judging is over at the fair and a fair number of ribbons and special awards we won by members. Lucille Varelmann of Mason City won Best of Show with her “Fastest Lone Star in the West” quilt.
Carlene Davis made an impressive showing with First and a Special Award for her Chevron Log Cabin quilt.
Among those that placed first were Jo Best, Phyllis Wright, Cheryl Nesbit (4), Nancy Malmin, Minerva Wagner, Carlene Davis (2), Marion Anderson, Connie Butler, Norma Paulsen (3), Beth Rassmusen, Pam Mayer, Lucy Varrelmann, and Robert Echleberger.
Second place winners included: Kelsey Jones (3), Norma Paulsen (2), Cheryl Nesbit (7). Mrs. Lester Hill, Gayle Behrends, Sadie Ecleberger and Robert Echleberger, Phyllis Wright and Beth Rassmussen.
Third place winners were: Kelsey Jones, Cheryl Nesbith, Jane Zrostlic (2), Sue Echleberger, Beth Rassmussen, and Cheryl Nesbeth.
Impressive competition and I wish they would display the quilts better. You could hardly see the quilts (as the pictures in the slideshow will illustrate) because they were piled on top one another. Of course you aren’t allowed to touch the quilts to look at them nor even look at the tags. So if I missed anyone I am sorry. Just let me know and I will include your name on the web.
Now, to let everyone know I will be gathering people for the quilt show committees. If you want to volunteer for a committee please let me know at the picnic or by e-mail (niqg@mchsi.com). I want to have our first meeting in late September. If I do not get volunteers right away I will be making phone calls. Remember, just because you head a committee does not mean you will be working it alone. You can gather people on your own or ask me to help you find people to work in the committee. Think about a theme, and special changes you want made. Let’s get started!
The contest on the Spaces will be dropped due to lack of interest. Instead I will be putting tidbits of information from the game that I think are interesting.
Next month I will be back to talking about web sites. For now just know that I will be making some changes in the links and on the site. New slide shows will be going up this month from the fair and from old quilt shows. I hope you get a chance to look at them and remember the good times we had then. Kelsey

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Jenny’s comments: First of all I would like to congratulate all the winners who entered items for competition in the fair this year. Good for you!
I also wanted to say that I agree with Kelsey about the displaying of the competitive quilts. I understand the space issue but there were 2 A-frames that had nothing displayed on the other halves. There is also plenty of room to hang more winning quilts from the ceiling. The quilts that were displayed this year were folded and over lapped in such a way that you could not tell what that quilt was all about. I feel that we as a group should volunteer to help out next year in hanging the quilts with a little more compassion and at least, if they have to be folded they could be folded in such a way as to get a better feel of what the theme of the quilt is. Also with no one be able to touch the tags that they could be pinned open so that the viewer could more easily see who the maker is. The building is air conditioned so that it would not be too uncomfortable to work in. And really if at least 6-8 gals came as a group we could have it done in no time at all! I just know that Katie Elson would readily welcome volunteers to make the ‘Threads’ area more appealing to the public with our help. What do you think girls? Should we get together and go as a group before the next fair and ask Katie about it?
On another note: Our fair booth looks spectacular again this year! It was pretty darn hot setting up but isn’t it hot every year! I hope all of you had a chance to visit the booth with its very pretty display of quilts and see the surrounding activities and the good eats. Dixie appreciates and thanks everyone who helped set up the booth and to represent us too during the excruciating heat. Pictures will be on our website and in some in newsletter.
Also want to let everyone know that The Hooked On Tuesdays Quilters at the North End Center are now officially moved to the Senior Citizen’s Center located at 326 4th ST. N E, just west of East Park. Everyone is welcome to come any time to sew on a project or if you need help with something, someone will be there to give you assistance. Also we are putting several charity quilts together and can always use help with that ongoing project. A lunch is served by the Center at noon so there is always tasty meal available. If you don’t want to eat the meal, bring a sack lunch. Coffee is available in the morning. Please come join us for sewing, fellowship, good cheer, smiles, hugs and a good ‘Gabbin’ session. We meet every Tuesday at 9AM till when ever. Jenny S

Habitat for Humanity

The dedication of the Habitat for Humanity home built for the Candice Ingersall family in Charles City, IA, took place on Sunday July 23rd. Joan Chandler a member of our NIQG presented 2 quilts.
