Trading Patches Quilt!
Doors will be open by 8:30!

May 2008- Group 3: Margaret McMullin, Jo Ann Johnson, Sherrill Kline, Kathy Coverdale,
Nancy Trager, Janice Pralle & Margaret Hanawalt will be hosting this month!
Workshop 9-noon!

The day has finally arrived! Laurie Schwarck will lead us on this fun adventure! After many months of trading squares and strips you get to create a work of art! Come prepared to put together ‘Trading Patches’. This pattern appeared in the McCall’s Quilting magazine issue August 2007. This scrappy quilt will enhance any décor and brighten up your room with its many colors! This will be the last chance of trading squares and strips. The color for May is oranges! Laurie will be providing extra squares and strips for anyone who needs them. The amounts given so far are more than enough to create the May project. This would be a great time to retrade some of your squares and strips for a true scrappy quilt!
Things you will need for class are:
Sewing machine, general sewing supplies, smiles and good cheer. Irons will be provided.

We will have potluck at noon! Due to some changes for potluck, remember that the hostesses will provide the desserts that will be served with coffee in the afternoon until 3pm. All other Members who wish to attend potluck can bring anything else they wish. We had a fabulous potluck last month! Please remember those with health issues when preparing your dish. Thank you all!

1PM-will consist of General Meeting, follow up of Quilt Show business, and the announcement of the 2008-2009 slate of Officers, Board and Chairs. Final approval by membership vote. Also the winner of the raffle quilt will be here to be presented with her new quilt! You don’t want to miss this!

Lottery block this month: April showers bring May Flowers! Bring a pretty fat quarter/s of
Blues to represent rain or fabric with rain drops on it! Each fat quarter gives you more chances to win!

Block of the month! Just in time for spring is the Butterfly block! It finishes out to a 9” size. Make this cute quilt to set out to enjoy all summer! Or make a pretty table runner to set under that wonderful bouquet of tulips! Pattern included in newsletter.

Next month Mandy M. will lead us in creating a Trupunto project!

2008 Quilt Show The Heritage Continues
April 12th & 13th, 2008 Sat 10-4PM & Sun Noon -4 Newman High School

I want to thank everyone who helped set up, take down, exhibit quilts and helped with the quilt show for 2008. Many things had to fall into place for a successful show. I especially would like to thank and express our appreciation for all the help provided by Linda and John Matson and Cheryl and Jim Nesbitt. Linda and Cheryl are members of the Lake Area Quilt Guild and shared their husbands with us to set up and take down the frames. Thankfully we also had the help of husbands and sons of our own members. No matter how liberated we women are, we need the muscles and will of men every once in a while.

The raffle quilt was won by Carol Post, Manly, Iowa, and she will be at the May 14th meeting so that we can present it to her. She is very excited about winning it.

Viewer's Choice of our beautiful quilts is as follows: 1ST PLACE: Jo Ann Johnson (Carpenter's Star); 2nd Place: Kelsey Jones (Bright Star of Hope); 3rd Place: Jo Best (I Have a Dream). Jo Ann's and Kelsey's quilts were quilted by Sandi Stark and as always, Jo's was hand quilted. They are all beautiful as was every quilt in the show. On the viewer's choice ballots, there were many comments regarding how beautiful the quilts were and what fun the viewers had selecting their choice.

I am not including the financials for the show as that is available in the Treasurer's report; however, I was very pleased to find out that our attendance was higher this year than 2006. I'm sure the publicity played a very big part in that.

I am asking that all the chair persons involved with the different committees write a short critique regarding this year's show and any suggestions to improve the 2010 show that you might have. I also would like any of the members that sat and had coffee during the show and discussed what improvements could be made express those to any of the chairpersons, myself or any officers of the guild so that when the time comes to plan the 2010 show, we will have everything ready to go. It's not that far in the future.

Thanks again for all the help. An event this size takes every member to make it a success.

Carlene

To NIQG!
Thank you so much for the pretty comfort quilt. It really is a comfort and I surely do appreciate it. It was quite unexpected since I wasn’t in the hospital or had an accident, etc. however- I really enjoyed the chicken pox at age 3, but I’m not enjoying the 3 month siege of ‘shingles’ with no end to the pain in sight. They have severely hampered my sewing efforts. I hope I can get a few quilt to show. Thank you all! Sincerely Mary Alexander

BOARD MEETING AT 10AM AT THE SENIOR CENTER ON APRIL 29TH, 2008!
PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND.
Board meetings open to any member of NIQG.

It’s Spring Planting Time
Plant 5 rows of peas: peace, preparedness, promptness, perseverance, politeness, prayer.
Next, plant 3 rows of squash: squash gossip, squash criticism, squash indifference.
Then plant 5 rows of lettuce: let us be faithful, let us be loyal, let us be unselfish,
let us love one another, let us be truthful.
No garden is complete without turnips: turn up of church, turn up with a smile,
turn up with new ideas, turn up with real determination.

A Note From your President

It has been great being your president this year and I am almost sorry to see it come to a close. The officers, board member and committee chairs have been great to work with.
As many of you know we almost lost our Vice-President, Cathy Knowles, to kidney failure twice and this facilitated my early return from Wisconsin. Under doctor’s advice she has resigned as Vice-President and Carlene Davis has offered to take her place. We will be voting for our officers, board members, and chair positions in May. If you would like to help by volunteering for a position please speak up.
Because it has become harder and harder to get volunteers for position (not just the officers) we will be talking about possibly condensing some chairs into one. This, of course, will go to the board first, and then come to the floor for a vote.
If you have internet access, check out the new stuff going up on the web site. I am asking every group to submit a paragraph on what they have planned for their month and a web site or photos to add. These are going on to our workshops page. There will also be more patterns on the web site and our scrapbooks are going digital as well. It is our hope that this will promote greater membership numbers.
As always everyone is invited to the board meeting held the last Tuesday of the month. We share many ideas and have fun along the way.

History of Aprons
I don't think our kids know what an apron is.

The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.
It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.
From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that "old-time apron" that served so many purposes REMEMBER: Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don't think I ever caught anything from an Apron.

Excellence can be attained if you:
Care more than others think is wise.
Risk more than others think is safe.
Dream more than others think is practical.
Expect more than others think is possible!

Better late than never!
All I need to know I learned from the Easter Bunny.

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
Walk softly and carry a big carrot.
Everyone needs a friend who is all ears.
There’s no such thing as too much candy.
All work and no play can make you a basket case.
A cute little tail attracts a lot of attention.
Everyone is entitled to a bad hare day.
Let happy thoughts multiply like rabbits.
Some body parts should be floppy.
Keep your paws off others people’s jelly beans.
Good thing come in small sugar-coated packages.
The grass is always greener I someone else’ basket.
An Easter bonnet can tame even the wildest hare.
To show your true colors you have to come out of your shell!
