Happy New Years to All!
Here’s a cheer to you all! May your machines always be oiled. May your needles be threaded in a rainbow of colors. May your top and bottom tensions be flawless. Speaking of tensions, on your machine, wouldn’t it be a wonderful machine if it had an automatic tension setting system on it. I mean really, just think about it. No matter what sized thread you had in the top tension would be perfectly matched to a thread of a different size or entirely different element in the bobbin and then sewed together smoothly with no fuss no muss! Oh what a machine!
I have found with experimenting with several threads on my machine, which is an Elna Dream Quilters Pro, that I can get away with some differences in the threads sizes and types, but not as many as I would like to sometimes. I have discovered that rayons have to be with rayons. God forbid I have a rayon thread in the bobbin and a cotton covered poly in the top. No matter how many times I adjust the tensions, it doesn’t do a good job. Big floppy loops seem to appear out of nowhere! If I wanted ‘toe catchers’ in my quilt, then that is the route to go. No one needs that stress! I have found that 100% mercerized cotton in the top and a cotton covered poly in bobbin or reversed, works ok but you do need to do some adjusting before starting a project. It’s good to have a quilted practice piece nearby to experiment with.
Now don’t faint girls, I have used hand quilting thread in my machine on small projects. I know! I know! NEVER USE HAND QUILTING THREAD IN YOUR MAHCINES! But on a few of my projects it had to be that type of thread. And guess what! My machine survived. Adjusting the tensions for that thread is very tricky. The bobbin is the trouble spot for me. As you know that hand quilting thread is thicker with the waxy coating and doesn’t wind well if you have tried it. The tensions have to be spot on or a ‘couched’ appearance is the result. (I super cleaned the shaft after)
I also have discovered that cheaper threads or old thread can cause severe headaches. Please be careful when you are buying that thread that is on sale at discount stores, (we won’t mention any stores in particular, but you know what ones I mean). The quality and shelf life can be atrocious! Who knows how long that thread which is already lower quality has been sitting out in the strong lights and dry air. Setting the tensions for them can be a nightmare. Another thing to understand tensions better is the type of needle you use. I use a ‘quilting needle’ for all my machining. No matter if it is just to sew seams or actual machine quilting. I seem to have better control of tensions when used to using only one type of needle. They are sold as Schmetz size 75/11 and 90/14. I use size 11 for mostly seams and 14 for actual quilting.
I have also found that if your needle is bent or not the right needle for that particular thread you are using will also cause a blizzard of headaches. You wouldn’t use a jean needle for silk thread. Even a needle that has developed a burr will cause chaos with the tension. You need to think about your needle as well as thread when you set tensions on your machine. With all that to think about, I strongly feel we should write the sewing machine companies to develop a machine with an instant tension setter so that we don’t have to work so hard to create our masterpieces!
Well anyway, just dreaming of the perfect machine…
Happy Holidays and Happy Quilting!

January 13th,2010 is Charity Day for the North Iowa Quilters Guild! 9AM- 3PM Noon potluck!
Things to bring are: Sewing machine in good working order. Any orphan blocks or blocks that are in common. Bring any quilt tops, backs and batting! We will need plyers, and large needles. Yarn will be provided to tie quilts. Bring large scissors, rotary cutters and boards. You are certainly welcome to bring finished quilts too. We will have some batting there to use.
We really need anything you can donate. There is always the need for ABC quilts which stay local. We are in dire need of twin size quilts too. These too will be given locally. The Francis Lauer and Four Oaks need twin sized Quilts. These kids need to know that someone cares.
We will have one area of risen tables to use. Other tables will be put together for you to work on. Please come at 9AM ready to create as many quilts as possible. I remember one year that we were able to get over 25 quilts done. Let’s try that again! I challenge you ladies to do battle (with a smile of course)! Bringing finished quilts count!
FLEA MARKET ALL DAY! Clean out your sewing room! Quit laughing! It can’t be that bad! Bring your items for sale. That way you will have more room for more fabric!

Update on brown n’ serve buns…
As you read last month, you know my dilemmas of past years of brown n’ serve buns during Thanksgiving. Well I will have you know that they were perfect this year! Although something else happened to my dismay and not to mention my hubby was not a happy camper. Every year my hubby makes a scalloped corn and a baked bean casserole. These are his mother’s recipes that are dear to his heart. They take exactly 1 hour at 350 to bake.
Everything is under control… or so I thought…I had the cooked turkey and ham in the big electric roaster. Taters in a crock, dressing done and gravy perfect. All the fixin’s for finger foods out on table and being enjoyed by all. I put in the corn and bean casseroles and set the time and temp. Nothing to worry about.
Well my oldest Daughter’s fiancé, Chris, wanted to bring a recipe of ham balls that he discovered and Kari made up a squash dish that had to be baked also. The corn and beans had been in the oven for 20 minutes. This was the first sign of a disaster.
In went their dishes alongside the casseroles. Well I am thinking that with extra dishes in the oven that maybe I should turn it up so the ham balls will not be raw and done by the time the casseroles are done. I check everything a few minutes later and think a few more degrees should be added. Now while all this is going on there is lots of talking going on and kids are very busy and the house is getting louder.
Soon the timer goes off and out comes the dishes. The ham balls look wonderful, squash perfect and then out comes the corn. Oh boy was it black all the way around the baking dish. We could only eat the middle. And you don’t even want to know what the beans looked like. Let’s just say that the dish had to be soaked overnight. Hubby announced that he had nothing to do with the baking and eyed me with evil in his eyes. Oh will I ever learn? But one good thing is that the buns were superb! Jen

Life is too short to wake up with regrets. So love the people who treat you right.
Love the ones who don't just because you can. Believe everything happens for a reason.
If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands. If it changes your life, let it.
Kiss slowly. Forgive quickly. God never said life would be easy. He just promised it would be worth it.

Christmas party
Oh what an enjoyable day we had at our Christmas party! And Santa made a visit as well. We hope you get your new bag decorated the way that pleases you and you can bring it for show and tell. Nancy’s sample of what she did to her bag was absolutely darling! And YoYos to boot. The potluck was delicious as well and the cookie exchange was grand! I want to thank all you ladies for singing one of my favorite songs, Hark the Harold Angels Sing. When I hear it, it always reminds me of my youth living in a safe and loving home. It might have something to do with Charlie Brown Christmas too. I love that story. Merry Christmas Girls!

Odds and ends:
My Mother Arla Loeffler would like to sell her Bernina 1130 sewing machine. It has all the attachments, bobbins, carrying case, advanced training manual, etc. It was always well maintained but has not been used in many years (at least 7). The asking price is $500.00 or BEST OFFER. Thanks, Bonnie

The North Iowa Quilters Guild is very charitable! We thank each and every one of you for your generous donations of time and talents. Here are the approximate totals of quilts that have been given to local organizations since we started keeping track.
ABC- 1025
Linus- 250
Crisis- 40
Nursing Home- 1 wheel chair quilt
Northern Lights (men)- 35
Habitat- 41(some of the extra quilts were donated personally by members for the children)
Wrap a Smile- 70
Military Hospital Fisher House -40 wheel chair quilts- 25 knitted caps mittens
We have also donated several quilts to families in need due to fires and etc. in the North Iowa Area. We haven't really kept tabs on those but I am guessing at least 30 or better.
We also donate Comfort Quilts to fellow members when needed.
Receivers of these quilts so far are: Mary Jane Allen, Virginia Brennan, Cassie Kloberdanz, Phyllis Wright, Jo Best, Bette Koeff, Jan Martin, Dixie Schaer, Carlene Davis, Jan Pralle, Minerva Wagner, Joan Chandler, Dorothy Wismer, Judy Magner (HOTQ’s), Marie Senne and Arlene Christensen, Ruth Ward, Laurie Schwark and Nancy Malmin, Kelsey Jones and Jenny Schlutz. A Comfort quilt will be given to Margaret McMullin this month.

Lottery block
It has been suggested to make the lottery blocks for charity quilts. What we could do is:
Make ‘x’ number of blocks for the lottery for you to win and donate ‘x’ number of blocks for future charity quilts. It is easier to make many blocks than just one. We will try it for the next couple of months and see how it works out. If it doesn’t work out we will discontinue the lottery. Any other suggestions are welcome! This month’s block is Spinkys from Marcia Hohn’s website. www.quilterscache.com The block also appeared in the December newsletter. A sample of the next block for February will be shown at January meeting. If you want to get a head start it is called Scrapbagger. A wonderful block to use up scraps! It would make a great charity quilt too! This block is from Marcia.

Chinese Auction
A total of $913.40 has been collected so far. We will have the auction again this month. We will try to clean out the old book case of wonderful items for you to win! Don’t miss out! Each ticket is only 25¢!

Lets Swap Squares 2009-2010
By now you all should have the Quilt Magazine Dec/Jan issue # 106 page 178. If not I believe there are still some at Fleet Farm. Check out your local quilt shops, fabric stores and department stores.
Here’s what you need to know: I just had a visit with one of the members about the swap of 6 inch squares, we are trading 10 sets of 2. If we switch this up to 12 it will go faster. If you put your set of 2 in a small baggy with the 12 other sets we can divide these up easily. We plan to start the swap in January.
Please remember the golden rule: trade with others as you wish others to trade unto you, good quality, 100% cotton quilt weight fabric. Laurie

Old Farmer's Advice:
-Life is simpler when you plow around the stump. -A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor.-Words that soak into your ears are whispered...not yelled. -Forgive your enemies; it messes up their heads. -Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you. -You cannot unsay a cruel word. -Every path has a few puddles. -Most of the stuff people worry about ain't never gonna happen anyway. -Don't judge folks by their relatives.
-Live a good, honorable life.. Then when you get older and think back, you'll enjoy it a second time. -Don't interfere with somethin' that ain't bothering you none. -If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'. -Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got. -Always drink upstream from the herd. -Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment. -Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin' it back in. -Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.

Someone asked the other day, 'What was your favorite fast food when you were growing up?'
'We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,' I informed him.
'All the food was slow.'
'C'mon, seriously . . . Where did you eat?'
'It was a place called 'at home,'' I explained!
‘Mom cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the kitchen table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.'
-Some parents NEVER owned their own house, wore Levis, set foot on a golf course, traveled out of the country, owned a computer or had a credit card. In their later years they had something called a revolving charge card. The card was good only at Sears Roebuck. Or maybe it was Sears & Roebuck. Either way, there is no Roebuck anymore. Maybe he died.
-My parents never drove me to soccer practice. This was mostly because we never had heard of soccer. I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow).
-We didn't have a television in our house until I was 5. It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at midnight, after playing the national anthem and a poem about God; it came back on the air at about 6 a.m. and there was usually a locally produced news and farm show on, featuring locals.
-I was 13 before I tasted my first pizza, it was called 'pizza pie.' When I bit into it, I burned the roof of my mouth and the cheese slid off, swung down, plastered itself against my chin and burned that, too. It's still the best pizza I ever had.
-We didn't have a car until I was 4. It was an old black Dodge. I never had a telephone in my room. The only phone in the house was in the kitchen and it was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn't know weren't already using the line. No cell phones!
-Pizzas were not delivered to our home. But milk was. All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers -- my brother delivered a newspaper, six days a week. It cost 7 cents a paper, of which he got to keep 2 cents. He had to get up at 6AM every morning. On Saturday, he had to collect the 42 cents from his customers. His favorite customers were the ones who gave him 50 cents and told him to keep the change. His least favorite customers were the ones who seemed to never be home on collection day. Now there is auto pay.
-Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it?

Happy Holidays to All!
Wow the time sure does go by fast! It seems like we just finished cleaning up summer gardens and flower beds, raked the fall leaves and here it is time for Thanksgiving and Christmas! I hope all of you are busy getting your ‘quilting projects’ completed for not only the quilt show coming in April, but to be given as gifts to your family and friends during the Christmas celebrations.
I am writing this before our family’s Thanksgiving dinner festivity. We are having our dinner on the Sunday after Thanksgiving so that all can make it that day for good eats and games. So I have no story to tell about the ‘infamous brown and serve buns’ (Please Lord help me) as yet. It is with high anticipation that they will turn out in excellent servable condition this year (I am praying).
However I am receiving mockery already. My oldest daughter Kari, made a pan of ‘brown and serves’ last week and thoughtfully sent a picture of them to our youngest daughter Jessie and their brother Bob, of ‘perfectly baked buns’! Of course Jessie eagerly rushed to show me the ‘perfectly baked buns’ on her phone! I pretended I couldn’t see them as the picture was too small to see goodly. (Please Lord forgive me, I lied). They looked scrumptious!
As most of you know it has been a given that I burn the dickens out of those ‘brown and serves’ every year but last year. Last year they were raw and cold on the insides (I didn’t want to burn them, girls!). I still remember the rolling eyes and polite conversation concerning those wicked ‘brown and serves’!
This year is going to be different. I purchased ‘air bake cookie sheets, guaranteed not to burn those malicious buns! I highly foresee keeping an eye on them and baking them to excellence! I will serve them hot and slightly toasted. Those buggers will tickle my family’s taste buds and I will hear nothing but praise of ‘ohhing and ahhhing’! I am paying no attention to insults that have the words- hockey puck, dog doo-doo and meteors, in them, that appear to be growing as we near our big dinner. I’ll show ‘em! Perfect buns coming their way! (Please oh Lord, be with me in my kitchen that day).
Happy Thanksgiving Girls! Jen

Now onto Christmas Tidings!

If you would like to participate in making an ornament please bring one that you would like to share in a wrapped package or plain paper lunch bag. These can be quilted, embroidered, painted or anything your talent takes you to create your ornament. Put you name in it.

fun ‘Quilty Christmas Poem’

HO HO HO! See you all there!

THE COMPUTER SWALLOWED GRANDMA
The computer swallowed grandma.
Yes, honestly it’s true!
She pressed 'control' and 'enter'
And disappeared from view.

It devoured her completely,
The thought just makes me squirm.
She must have caught a virus
Or been eaten by a worm.

I've searched through the recycle bin
And files of every kind;
I've even used the Internet,
But nothing did I find.

In desperation, I asked Google
My searches to refine.
The reply from him was negative,
Not a thing was found 'online.'

So, if inside your 'In-box,'
My Grandma you should see,
Please 'Copy,''Scan' and 'Paste' her
And send her back to me.

The afternoon program was presented by Fran Randall. Fran hand-makes cuddly and cute teddy bears made out of different furs and materials, mostly from old coats. She also showed us the unique jackets and coats she makes. Kim Sime, Secretary

NIQG Board Meeting November 17, 2009
The NIQG Board meeting was called to order by president Jenny Schlutz. A donation to the public television stations was discussed. It was decided to give a $50 donation to IPTV at this time. Kelsey J. will check into the programming of the two Minnesota public stations and donation opportunities and will report back to the Board.
The treasurer’s report and secretary minutes were approved. Margaret McMullin reported that there were $84 in quilt raffle ticket sales during the Clear Lake Shop Hop event.
A change in the lottery block process will be tried. Instructions for the lottery block and a sample of the block will be available at the Guild meeting the month before due. This will give members one month to make lottery blocks. It is hoped that this will increase participation.
The Board discussed plans for next month’s Christmas party Dec. 9. The party will begin at 10:00 am with a potluck at noon. There will be no Chinese auction in Dec. Kelsey Jones, Cathy Knowles and Mary Ann Johnson will guide us through mini-classes in the morning. Other details will be in the newsletter.
The 2010 Quilt Show was discussed. A memorial to NIQG members who have passed away is in the planning stages. Possible changes to the layout of the quilt displays and boutique was suggested with the small quilts being hung in the gym instead of the cafeteria so more people would see them. Also, the boutique could be moved into the gym as well. The goal is to fill the space in the gym and have more exposure to our small quilts and boutique. Currently there are enough projects in the works for the boutique. Individual members selling items in the boutique are reminded that their prices need to reflect 7% sales tax and each individual is responsible for paying their own tax. Also, 10% of the individual’s sales goes to the Guild.
Carlene Davis will have forms available for those wishing to display quilts or sell items after the first of the year. There will also be sign up sheets for work sessions at the show. Our membership numbers are a bit less than in the past and it will take all members to work at the show to make it successful. Kim Sime, Secretary

Chinese Auction
$40 was added in October and another $29.25 in November. That brings the total for two years to $913. 40! Wow you did good girls! This has been a great fundraiser for our Guild! No Chinese Auction this month of December. Auction will resume in January 2010.

Lottery Blocks
The lottery block for the month of January 2010 is called Spinkys by Macia Hohn. It has been decided to show the block a month in advance to give you more time to make them. The patterns will be available at meetings and in the newsletter. We thank Marcia for her permission to enjoy her blocks. Her website is www.quilterscache.com

Lets Swap Squares 2009-2010
By now you all should have the Quilt Magazine Dec/Jan issue # 106 page 178. If not I believe there are still some at Fleet Farm. Check out your local quilt shops, fabric stores and department stores.
Here’s what you need to know:
With much discussion it was decided to create 3 groups of participants. These are group 1-Batiks only, group 2- Batik blends and group 3- Cottons. Members in these groups are: G 1-Batiks- Mary Ann J, Lola S, Cathy K, Marlene O, Barb D, Shelly K, Dixie S, and Margaret M. G 2 blends- no one yet and G 3cottons- Marilyn M, Connie W, Kim S, Laurie S, Margaret M, and Kelsey J.
Please bring 1 or more sets of ten- 6” different squares each month. Bring lights one month and darks another. The more contrast the better. Please remember the golden rule: trade with others as you wish others to trade unto you, good quality, 100% cotton quilt weight fabric.

Odds and ends
Arla Loeffler would like to sell her Bernina 1130S sewing machine. She purchased it in 1992 for $1200 and has used it very little. Also there is an advanced workbook included. Please call her at the IOOF home and make an offer!

Jo Best had knee surgery and recovering nicely. Good for you Jo!

Jenny Schlutz received good news that she won’t have to have eye socket repair surgery. Second opinions are a must in this day and age!

Mary Jane Allen’s family wishes to thank all of us for being a part of her life! We will miss Mary Jane greatly!

We are going to put together a memorial for our quilt show of quilting members who we have lost. Here is a list. If I have not included someone please tell me or Betty Neel immediately! Workshop 9AM-11:45AM
MYSTERY PROJECT

Kits will be available for you to make your mystery project. Everything is included in your
kit to make the project, including backing, batting and borders. The only things you will need
are a general hand sewing kit, black embroidery floss or black pearl cotton, paper scissors
and a number 2 or mechanical pencil. You will be able to complete the project except the
borders and you can take those home to do.

Please remember, if you are not taking the workshop, please respect the instructor and the attendees and keep your activities and conversations to a minimum. We will, in turn, try to set up in the rear of the room, so that there is space between activities. Again, if this class is a class that is costing the guild and members to participate, looking over shoulders and taking part in the workshop in any way will classify you as part of that workshop and fees will be expected. Another reminder that shouldn’t need repeating is about starting the workhshops promptly at 9:00. Most workshops need all the time we can spare, so that we can take home completed or nearly completed projects. So help us out, ladies, this is for your pleasure and fun.

Potluck at noon with a general meeting starting at 1PM. Fran Randall of Mason City will follow with a trunk show of her originally created and constructed jackets. She has something for everyone and she may even bring some of her wonderfully designed teddy bears. See you in November!
Remember to contact Kim Sime if there is any news of members that needs to be shared. Perhaps there is a new baby in the family or someone receives an award, anniversaries or a death in the family has occurred. Please call Kim at 641-423-7727. We need to take care of each other!

Fiber Arts Festival
After many years of chairing for the Fiber Arts Festival held in South Bridge Mall and the lack of interest, I have stepped down as Chair of this project. Connie Wagner and Shelly Koran (of
NIQG) will continue the tradition and be your contact persons for 2010.

Hostessing for your month
There are a number of activities the hostesses must do to have a smoothly run workshop and meeting. The church is open by 8:15- 8:30 and most instructors will need that time to set up their display. You need to be available to help the instructors, and also to get the tables in the right configuration for the workshop. That way the workshop can start right at 9:00 to allow enough time for it.
That means the coffee must be started and cold drinks mixed. The ice is located in the machine in the closet next to the preschool. The coffeepot, ironing boards and tub of supplies to be used are all in the preschool closet and must be brought out into the fellowship hall or kitchen. Beverages may need to be replenished for the luncheon. As hostesses you bring the desserts, centerpieces and anything special to be used for the afternoon luncheon, other members provide the potluck. One or two members in your group must man the welcome table to take care of Chinese auction tickets and other signup sheets and etc, and to welcome everyone coming in! It is very pleasant to be acknowledged when you arrive! After lunch, everybody needs to help clean up the kitchen, get their leftovers put together and basically, all that should be in the kitchen is the desserts for the afternoon luncheon. The hostesses must make sure that the kitchen is cleaned up by putting everything back in its proper location, making sure that the waste baskets are emptied into a large bag (under the counter along the back wall of the kitchen) and that bag taken to the dumpster. Garbage bags can be found in the kitchen closet. Paper towels are found beside that closet on an open shelf. As of right now the tables and chairs can be left out as there is an activity that evening. But please place the chairs with the tables and pick up any refuse under and around them. (From Carlene: The October hostesses did a fantastic job. Hopefully every group will keep the above information on hand, so that each month will go as smoothly as this month.)

2010 Quilt Show
April 17th & 18th, 2010 Sat 10-4PM & Sun Noon -4
Newman High School $3 admissions
Friday April 16th at 4PM will be set up time.
Quilt Show meetings will be held at the guild meetings. Carlene will have signup sheets to work the different areas beginning in February. It may seem too early to do things for the show but it is not. Some things need to be done so that there is no confusion later. She will be expecting your input for ideas as well as working the show. It takes all of us to make the show successful. Please do what you can! We appreciate all your talents!
We have had many wonderful show and tell quilts. Be thinking of showing them and finishing up new projects. If you have a quilt or two that you haven’t shown please think about bringing it to the show. We and everyone else would love to see your quilts! It would be really nice to have the Blue Berry Hill quilts hanging together as well as the Naughty Row by Rows and Denise Sprain’s workshop of Little Tangy quilts too.
Everyone has such wonderful ideas when it comes to colors and you all certainly show your talents at our ‘show and tells’! You never know who you might inspire to become a quilter with all your talents out there for everyone to see! That’s what happened to me at your 1990 quilt show. Through much trial and a lot of errors and still learning, I became a quilter that day because of you and my Mom!
Raffle tickets are now available. All members are expected to purchase 10 tickets for $10. You may sell them or enter your name to win the ‘Cabin Lights’ quilt. Please help sell tickets at any events in your area. Money from the sales funds the guild for 2 years.
Margaret McMullin and Betty Neel will handle the selling of tickets. Contact them for your tickets and also selling chances in different places. The raffle quilt was at South Bridge Mall, at Betty Neel’s week long rummage and will be going to Clear Lake guild soon as well as other surrounding guilds. Please say yes when Margaret or Betty ask for your help!

Chairpersons for the committees are as follows:
Door Prizes – Dixie Schaer
Hostesses – Kim Sime
Registration of quilts – Jean Payne (possibly)
Publicity – Cathy Knowles
Boutique – Kelsey Jones & Mary Ann Johnson
Vendors – Jeanne Moorehead & Ruth Ward
Quilt Raffle – Margaret McMullin & Betty Neal
Show Arrangement – Carlene Davis
Admissions – Cathy Knowles
Bed Turning – Nancy Trager
Antiques & Accessories –

During the upcoming months, sign up sheets will be provided for each committee. With the decline in membership, every member will be needed to work in the various stations. We are still hoping that Newman School will have a group to provide lunch and snacks for both the workers, vendors and guests. Somehow, quilts and food always to together.

Memberships
Memberships are still coming in and a draft of the membership list was ready at the October meeting. With the additions and corrections, Kelsey should be able to provide us with a current list at the November meeting. Be sure to pay your dues ASAP so that you can be listed with other members.
Revising the groups
Due to membership declines, we will be revising our groups from 9 groups to 5 groups. This means that there will be more members in your group to depend on. Some of the groups have 7 members and others have lost some due to non membership renewal. This new revision will become effective in September 2010. A signup sheet will be sent around with a chance for you to sign up yourself with a particular group of persons. This will be done perhaps in April, 2010, so be thinking what months work best for you. Perhaps you are riding together with a group and it would be better to serve together that month. If you do not signup during this time I will be putting you into a group I think best fits that month. The months that no groups are needed are July-no meeting, August-picnic and December where the board and officers will serve as hostesses. That means with 9 months, the groups will rotate during the year. Thanks to everyone for your understanding and cooperation!

A motion was made, seconded and passed that attendance at any workshop will be by sign-up with payment due if required at that time.
IPTV has sent a request for a donation. This will be tabled until next month so we can check the treasurer’s books for the date of the last donation.
Jeanne M. reported that 12 spaces have been taken by vendors at the 2010 Quilt Show so far. Laurie Schwark will need information on upcoming projects as soon as possible. There will be kits available for purchase for the November workshop. Carlene D. will be writing the November newsletter.

Not only is it do-able. It is also fast and easy.To work on dark fabrics with ease. No more chalk that rubs off. I’ll show you how to use Glad Press ‘N’ Seal™ coupled with the Quick Prep Stitch to work with dark fabrics. ---Continued---To add embroider to your appliqué blocks the Quick Prep Way. Marking embroidery on an appliqué block is always difficult. The Quick Prep Way will eliminate pencil or chalk marks from the front of your block. To make perfect paper cuts and Hawaiian appliqué. Audit Committee
Kelsey Jones and LeNore Forbes have completed the audit of the monies for NIQG. We thank these ladies for their time and talents!

Fiber Arts Festival
After many years of chairing for the Fiber Arts Festival held in South Bridge Mall and the lack of interest, I am stepping down. In the past there were many other groups that sold crafty items along with us, selling quilted items. That’s why it was named FAF. This brought in many customers. But as time went on fewer and fewer crafters attended leaving only us in the mall for the last 6 or 7 years. As our guild changes and ages, there are fewer of us are making items for sale as well. So, if there is no one to take over, we thank South Bridge Mall for the many years of free tables for displaying items, the wonderful foods available (especially the cookies) and customers.
However, I have not informed the Mall yet of this decision as there may be a member or two who would like to try and sell their wares there under the name of NIQG for the Fiber Arts Festival. If there is anyone who is interested please contact me ASAP as I will be letting them know by Christmas that we will no longer be coming unless there is someone who wants to sell their sewing related items there. That way the Mall will have time to fill in that weekend. It is very simple to get a temporary tax form, I have the information you need for that. I wish to thank all ladies who have attended in the past as it was a fun experience! Jenny

NIQG General Meeting September 9, 2009
The general meeting of the NIQG was called to order by President Jenny Schlutz. The morning workshop was presented by Denise Sprain from Iowa Falls. We worked on the quilt pattern “A Little Tangy”. Denise will also be presenting our afternoon program, showing us what is new at the shop. It is always a delight to have Denise with us. The Treasurer’s report and Secretary’s minutes were approved as submitted. As a reminder, the Fiber Arts Festival will be Saturday, September 19 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at Southbridge Mall. The guild will be selling raffle tickets on that day. A few more volunteers are needed to help sell tickets. Kelsey has quilt raffle tickets available for members to purchase. Each member is asked to purchase a minimum of 10 tickets to sell to others or to enter the raffle themselves.
A thank-you was received from Gwen Matthews for all the prayers, visits, cards, and memorials with the passing of her husband.
The Quilt Show is April 17 – 18, 2010. Volunteers are needed to take the raffle quilt to various locations to show and sell tickets. Betty Neel and Margaret McMullin will coordinate this. The February 2010 morning workshop will be devoted to making items to sell in the boutique. Everyone is asked to be thinking of ideas. Jeanne M. has some ideas already but would like additional ideas. Jeanne reported that 5 vendors have already reserved space at the show. The gambling license will need to be renewed by November.
Jenny passed around silk thread from Thailand. Marie Senne will be presenting a program on the silk thread in the future. Since there is a conflict with the usual date, the Board meeting will be the 4th Tuesday of September. Membership cards are ready and may be picked up from Kelsey. $15.50 was raised with the Chinese Auction this month. Lucky winners were Nancy Malmin, Shelly Koran, Cathy Knowles, and Barb DeBoer. A door prize was donated by Holly Schimmelphenig from Saintly Stitches and that lucky winner was Shirley Schneider.
Shelly K. reminded everyone of the program, Quilting Treasures, to be held Oct. 3 at NIACC. She also shared with us information about the Koinonia Piecemakers. Everyone is welcome to join the group. The last day to renew the Fons & Porter subscriptions through the guild is today.
We saw some very nice projects during Show and Tell:
Jenny Schlutz – flannel quilt
Mary Ryerson – John Deere quilt
Carlene Davis – bag using sleeves from another project
Shelly Koran – “It Takes Two” quilt and bag
Joan Chandler – “Weather Vane” quilt
Phyllis Wright – embroidered quilt

September 9, 2009

Hello Everyone! Fall is upon us! It’s time to start digging in your stashes or better yet visit the local quilt shops and start creating quilts! Oil up that machine! Put your foot on the pedal and sew like the dickens!

Workshop for this month will be presented by the delightful Denise Sprain. She has graced us with wonderful workshops and programs for many years! As you know Denise hails from Iowa Falls and works in the amazing quilt shop called Iowa Falls Sewing Machine.
Denise says, “This year we will be working out of the book, ‘Scrap Basket Surprises’ from That Patchwork Place. You may purchase the book for 24.95. This whole book is based on using 2 ½” strips. A great way to use Jelly rolls or Bali Pops! Or cleaning out the Scrap Basket! We will be creating ‘Little Tangy’- page 67. I have sent the sample just like the picture but any color combo will work, the strips need to be the full 42” wide for this project.
I have this started in Kansas Troubles using 2 ½ yards of one fabric and 33 strips of contrasting colors. This will be done by September. Same technique but completely different look. If you want a kit for Little Tangy in the yellow-orange version or Kansas Troubles version it is $67.50. This can be made bigger by adding more blocks.”
“Here’s what you need to bring with you: Little Tangy 51” x 63”
1 yard yellow print for inner border and binding
66 strips- 2 ½” of assorted yellow, orange and green prints for blocks- jelly rolls will work- the colors just need to work together, no background needed.
Kansas Troubles version- 2 ½ yards one fabric that contrasts with the other 33- 2 ½” strips.
3 ¾ yards of backing
55” x 67” batting
You must have either a 3 ½” ruler or a 4” or a 6” ruler, my preference is the 3 ½”.
A rotating matt is very helpful-but not necessary.
I have the 3 ½” ruler for $6.19.
We have 4” and 6” rulers and rotating mats. I will bring these along.
If you need the book, kits or rulers please call 1-800-238-1902 and reserve what you need.
If you would like to work ahead have your 2 ½” strips cut.
Even in the Kansas Troubles version the constant fabric is even cut up into 2 ½” strips.
Sew the strips together making sure that you have contrast between the strips.
I sewed a dark strip to all the constant 2 ½” strips from Kansas Troubles constant fabric.
I will present a short program on what’s new in the shop. See you all soon! Denise”
General sewing supplies-machine, cutting board, cutter & etc. Ironing board and irons are available.
PLEASE WILL GROUP 6 BE AT CHURCH BY 8-8:15 TO HELP DENISE CARRY IN HER GOODIES! AND GET COFFEE AND SUCH GOING TOO! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Potluck at noon! Come join us for a fun day!
Naughty Row by Row Reveal!
What a hoot that was! There are some very naughty girls in the group! We all had a good laugh at many of the rows that were shown. We enjoyed upside down coffee cups, spilled cups, cups with no handles, to coffee cups made in reverse colors. We saw a Christmas tree with a star so heavy it was bent over! I sure hope Nancy has fun getting that row in her quilt! (Sorry Nancy I couldn’t resist). We saw blocks that were not supposed to be in the quilt! We witnessed rows that were very short, very long and some even going in the ‘up and down’ position. We examined blocks that were running loose!
We saw rows that were sewed into squares! I was lucky to have two of those in my naughty quilt! Gee thanks girls! You girls are so very talented and creative! We saw wild rows with a ‘zinger or two’ in them! We saw outhouses, tree houses, stars, cows, flowers and bugs! That really spices up the quilts. We saw amazing embroidery and awesome appliqué! You name it, these quilts have it all!
The Naughty Row quilts will be a wonderful group hanging at our next quilt show in April 2010! Now that you all have your rows, be thinking of getting them together! You will have until January to finish them and qualify for some very nice prizes donated by Dixie Schaer.
I have the Naughty Quilt labels ready for you. Please see me to get yours at our September meeting! They are ready for you to write any info you wish. You certainly don’t want to forget who created those crazy rows! I hope you all had a wonderful and exciting time with this project! I know I did!
Laurie Schwarck will have a project in the works soon for us to enjoy later in the year. Jenny

Newman High School $3 admissions
Friday April 16th at 4PM will be set up time.
Regular Quilt Show meetings will be held at the guild meetings. Carlene will have signup sheets to work different areas. She will be expecting your input for ideas as well as working the show. It takes all of us to make the show successful. Please do what you can! We appreciate all your talents! We have had many wonderful show and tell quilts. Be thinking of showing them and finishing up new projects. It would be really nice to have the Blue Berry Hill quilts hanging together too. Everyone has such wonderful ideas when it comes to colors and you all certainly showed your talents there! And of course the Naughty Row quilts would be fun to show. You never know who you might inspire to become a quilter with all your talents out there for everyone to see! That’s what happened to me at your 1990 quilt show. Through much trial and a lot of errors and still learning, I became a quilter that day!
Raffle tickets are ready. All members are expected to purchase 10 tickets for $10. You may sell them or enter your name to win the ‘Cabin Lights’ quilt. Please help sell tickets at any events in your area. Money from the sales, funds the guild for 2 years.

August 14, 2009

Hello Everyone! On August 12th, we will be having our annual picnic at Central Park in Clear Lake down town in the room behind the band shell. It is air conditioned and has a wonderful view of the lake. You may arrive at 10:30AM. If you can help set up tables and chairs it would be much appreciated. We will have a short board meeting at 11:00AM as officers, boards and chairs take over their positions.
10:30AM-2PM--Flea Market time! Tables will be set up alone the window sides in which to sell your items. You may sell any sewing related items such as fabric, quilt tops, quilt blocks, scissors or anything related to sewing. Please have items clearly marked and take care of your own money. No Chinese Auction.
10-10” fabric exchange! If you would like to participate, bring 10 -10” squares in a baggie or pinned together to exchange with fellow members. The more 10-10” packets you bring the more you can exchange with quilters. A very nice way to get extra fabrics that you can use in your scrappy quilts!
At 11:30AM we will share a potluck. Coffee and a cool drink will be offered. Paper plates, table ware, cups and napkins will be provided. You may bring your own table setting if you prefer.
After Potluck we will have a general meeting and then the Naughty Row by Row Reveal!

Naughty Row by Row Reveal!
We are about to embark on a new quilting year of workshops and programs but not before we reveal the rows to the owners of our project, The ‘Naughty Row by Row’! There’s no hiding girls! We will know who was naughty and who was nice. I had trouble being naughty as I know some of you did, but I did see some really naughty rows created and oh so cute too!
Ok you Naughty Girls! Here’s the scoop! When you arrive with your brown bags please bring them to me or Kim Sime. After our general meeting, we will have a flannel board set up in which Kim will take pictures of the owners with their rows. We will be doing this instead of playing quilt bingo after our general meeting. We will try to move it along as fast as we can as there are 15 participating in the project. We really all do want to see what happened in your bags! Get ready for some fun!
What are you going to do with your rows? You will have until January 2010 to finish your quilt in any fashion that fits you or should we say fits your ‘rows’ to be eligible for some very nice prizes. Prizes donated by Dixie Schaer as Door Prize Chair for our Quilt Show. Quilt labels will be available for all Naughty Girls to use if you wish! See you all at the picnic!

Apple Blossom Quilts
-Will be coming to our guild on October 14th, 2009. I receive a wonderful newsletter from Friendship Quilters Guild located in Elizabeth, Illinois. In it, Barb Janz, the newsletter editor, had the following announcement. I went to Connie’s, Apple Blossom website to check it out. I did not see mention of the offer but I think when I receive the newsletter it will be talked about in it. I signed up for it today. Here is what Connie, owner of Apple Blossom Quilts has to say.

“Starting September 15, 2009, I will have a new 12-month free BOM. I have just one block made so far, but I'm lovin' it. The blocks will be large (18"). I'm making mine as a scrap quilt although it doesn't have to be scrappy. The block has a lot more piecing than you usually see from me. I'm also keeping the appliqué large, simple and floral. This will be the perfect quilt for a piecer who would like to get into appliqué.
The free pattern will only be available to readers of my newsletter. Please tell your quilting friends. They will want to sign up before September.”

Notes from our outgoing President-Carlene Davis
Well, here we are again. It's time for the New Year to begin and that means that it's my time to pass the gavel on to the new president, Jenny. This year has gone faster than some and slower than some if you know what I mean. We've had some good meetings, good workshops and a lot of good times. I am a little sad about the time passing, but I've enjoyed being your president and especially a member of this guild. It is also the time for renewing your membership to the guild. Remember, that $20.00 gives you a much needed day out, companionship and a fun learning experience for the entire year. We would miss you very much if you do not renew. We had a fun experience at the North Iowa Fair, but was a little disappointed that none of us, myself included, entered any quilts to be judged. I know that we have very good quilters in our guild and I realize that time gets away from us so we don't always get things done between one fair to the next. Oh, well. Maybe next year???? It is already August and we must get moving on the quilt show. We had a meeting on the 21st, but did not have a big response, so will be discussing the show at the picnic. Remember, the picnic is at the Lake Community Center on August 12, 10:30 set up time. SEE YOU THERE. Carlene

Newsletter information
Deadline for any news that you would like put in the newsletter is the 23rd of each month. All are welcome to submit any sewing related news articles to me, however if there is a copy right to it and permission has not been received to reprint, it will not be published. If the article is something that you have originally written and I have your permission to print it, it will appear in a near future newsletter according to space. If you would like to advertise to sell an item such as a sewing machine, sewing table or any other sewing related item you may do so at a small fee. Call me if you are interested.
Due to the economy we are trying to save money for our guild. You all need to tell me whether you would prefer to receive the newsletter as a hard copy, e-mail or just read it on our website.
-This is what will happen: if you wish to receive the newsletter by snail mail you will need to bring with you to the August or September meetings, 12 self addressed and stamped envelopes. You must also have your membership paid. You will receive the entire newsletter as it is intended. Patterns included (with permission).
-If you prefer it by e-mail it will be delivered as a ‘pdf’ which means you can print it out as if you received it directly from me. But to get the patterns you will be given a link. Remember I also would have to have your e-mail address.
-or simply log on to our website and you will see an edited version. What this means is that you will not see any the treasury report or any other significant information that is not for nonmembers. You will not see any patterns unless you are a member and have the password.
If I do not get envelopes from you and you have not indicated that you prefer e-mail I will assume that you will be reading it on our website. You will have until the October newsletter is ready to send, to let me know. I have heard from several of you already. I appreciate you telling me so that I can be better organized. Jenny

Posters will be given to guild members in March to display in their communities. Kelsey will look into the CVB (Convention & Visitors Bureau) grant to help with the cost of publicity. She will take the quilt show info to the CVB to be added in their brochure for 2010 events.
The fee for vendors will remain the same as in the past, $50 for 1 table/ $75 for 2 tables. Letters to the vendors, a poster, and business cards will be sent in one mailing to all possible vendors.
Jeanne M. and Ruth W. will be gathering patterns and making up kits for guild members to put together items for sale in the boutique. Our February 2010 workshop will be set aside to work on projects for the guild to sell in the boutique.

July 8 2009

July is upon us with heat and stormy weather. It is a good time to get out to your vegetable and flower gardens early in the day and back in the air conditioning for quilting! Get your sewing machines oiled up and start cranking out those quilts! Remember that we will not meet in July at the Covenant Church as the North Iowa Fair is our project for the month. Instead of a board meeting this month, we will have a Quilt Show Meeting, at 10AM, on Tuesday July 21st at the Senior Center.
The HOTQs will continue to meet on all Tuesdays at 9AM for sewing and sharing friendships at the Senior Center. Everyone is always welcome to come join them for fun and get help with any quilts. Remember that sewing machines are available for your use along with raised tables for basting quilts. Quilting tools are also available for your use too. You only need to bring your projects that you wish to work on or need help with. Also if you wish to have lunch you must let the Center know at least one day ahead. Their information is: Senior Citizen’s Center-326 4th street N E: 641-423-1502.

North Iowa Fair in Mason City, Iowa: July 22-26, 2009
Dixie Schaer-NI Fair Chairlady
We will need you to come help set up our booth at about 3:30PM on Tuesday July 21st at the fair. Please come to the North Iowa Fair with your quilts for show in our booth and any accessories that are appropriate for quilts. We have asked the Lake Area Quilters to join us also. Be sure to enter quilts for competition. Dixie will have a signup sheet for you to fill your time/s to help out manning our booth. These are 2 hour increments. When you come to work in the booth you may bring hand work with you, if you want to, as this helps to create interest to patrons. You do not have to bring any quilting if you don’t wish to. Be sure to be ready to give information about our club and answer any questions about quilts. There will be information sheets about our club and other quilt clubs available to pass out to patrons. See you there!
A thank you to our members!
Last month we had Five Fun Mini Workshops! These were excellent demonstrations given by our very talented members. They are Florence Hagstrom, who taught a quick workshop on making attractive tissue boxes in no time at all. Jo Best, showered us with her knowledge of rouching flowers and a fancy poinsettia. Mary Ryerson dazzled us with a fantastic fast method of making nine patches with strips of fabric. Kaye Klukow encouraged us not to be afraid of curves and had wonderful samples showing how to tackle those curves with ease. And Mary Ann Johnson amazed us with a very simple tuck method that can be used in not only pillows but in quilts as well. After our potluck we really enjoyed Dixie Schaer’s Trunk Show! Dixie told us a story about each of the beautiful quilts she had created. She also told us she had another tub filled with quilt tops somewhere in her sewing room! Sure hope she finds them and can give another Trunk Show someday! We wish to thank our members for a very pleasurable and educating day.
2009 Naughty Row by Row Quilt- theme ‘HOME’
NOTE: For the last few years we have been playing quilt bingo after our August potluck and general meeting. This year we will have our ‘Naughty Rows Reveal’ instead. With 15 participants in this project we need the time to get the rows up for photos and probably a few laughs too. Ok maybe a lot of laughs! Further details will be in August Newsletter.
Ok Girls we have come to the end of creating the rows. You should be working on your ‘Letters’ row or have it finished. At our August picnic we will have an area set up to take photos of the rows before they are sewn together. This will be the first time the owner will see her rows! We will then see who has been naughty and who has been nice! Remember the first row is the ‘theme home’! The second is ‘coffee cup’. The third row is ‘watering cans and the fourth is ‘tulips’. The 5th row is ‘hearts’. The 6th row is a flying goose or a friendship block! You choose which to use or don’t use them at all.
And last but not least is the 7th row using ‘Letters’. You may use the pieced letters provided or make your own. Perhaps you want to appliqué them on. Or you can use an embroidery machine or perhaps you have embroidery letters on your machine already to use. When you make the lettering please keep in mind whose quilt you are working on. Look at the top of your bag and see who owns the quilt. If it is Minerva’s for example, look at all her rows and give her quilt a name. It may be ‘Minerva’s Country Quilt’ or ‘Minerva’s ‘Naughty Row by Row’ or simply ‘Country Happenings’ or ‘Country Home’ or ‘County Christmas’.
What ever you think best describes her quilt you will make the letters for her. Now these letterings don’t have to be horizontal they may be vertical or even crosswise or perhaps in a circle. Please do not just pen the name on. That is just too naughty! Now stop that snickering girls!
Quilt labels will be offered for all quilt makers at the August Picnic. This way the quilt owner can add on it all the ‘Naughty Girls’ who had worked to create her quilt. With this quilt being so naughty I bet there will be a label or two on the front of the quilts or attached in some amusing way! Time will tell!
You will then have until December to finish your quilts to be qualified for prizes! The categories will be determined later. We have 4 very nice prizes already for you!

Chinese Baked Goods Auction
An incredible $46.50 was added to the Chinese Baked Goods Auction! The total is now $875.15 after almost 2 years of ‘auctions’! Thanks to everyone! This has been an enjoyable fund raiser! The monies have been used to help pay for our guild’s activities. The Chinese Auctions will continue in September. This Auction will be a little different! It will be a mystery! Brown bags filled with quilting items and such will be available to buy tickets on. What’s in the bags? You won’t know until you win the bag! Each ticket is 25¢!

Officers, Board and Chairperson
The slates for officers and board members have been approved! I wish to thank everyone for volunteering for these positions and also filling the different chairs. You are very much appreciated. Raffle Quilt News!
I have submitted a photo of our raffle quilt to an organization called ‘We’d Rather Be Quilting’ contest. They publish a twice yearly National Guide and a Regional Guide of upcoming quilt shows in the US. It would be an honor to be on the cover of their Booklet if we win. If we don’t win at least the quilt will represent our quilt show and hopefully attract more patrons!

Bus-trip Form is included in this newsletter. If you are interested in going to the Paduka Quilt show in Des Moines please fill it out with your $30 attached to it and take it to the quilt shop in Willowbrook Mall or give it to Betty Buss or Chris Spurr. You must have the money paid to hold your seat!
Membership form is included in the newsletter as well as on line at our website wwwniqg.org.
Please fill out and include $20. This is due at the August or September meetings. Or if you prefer, you may mail them to Kelsey Jones – 232 5th N W Mason City, Iowa 50401. Please write ‘membership form’ clearly on envelope. You may also drop them off at my home or mail them to me, Jenny Schlutz. My address is 1468 2nd S E Mason City, Iowa 50401.
I also would have to have your e-mail address.
Jenny

A Habitat Home in Forest City will be available soon for new home owners. It is a home that had been occupied by a wonderful family. But due to unfortunate circumstances they had to move. An open house was presented to attract the next owners.
A Habitat Home in Mason City will be available soon for Chris Hjelmgren and his son Christopher, age 11. This Habitat home was originally occupied by a very nice family for 14 years. They have since donated the house back to Habitat and moved because of a job transfer.
