9AM-noon: Morning Workshop:
‘4-Patch Stacked Posies’
Presented by Pat Vsetecka!
Who hails from Material Magic in New Hampton. (641) 394-2461 22 E Main St, New Hampton, IA

Come join us for a fun and creative morning! What better way to usher in the spring? By creating, a colorful ‘Posies’ quilt! Make this gorgeous quilt by using only ONE print fabric for the blocks and the borders! Pat will show us a simple and quick way to make your quilt. The ‘Posies’ quilt can be made in any size and color way that suits you. Bring smiles and your sewing accessories early so that you will be ready to sew by 9AM! ($10 fee).
Materials needed for the 4 Patch ‘stack and wack’: (note: finished sizes will vary depending on fabric chosen and layout).

The 4 patch posey Quilt

The measurement of the fabric repeat will determine how many blocks will be yielded. For example: a 12” fabric repeat will yield approx. 56 finished blocks if the squares are cut at 2 ¾” square. The squares will be sewn into a 4-patch to produce a 5” finished block. By adding a 1” finished sashing, 1” inner border and a 6” outer border, the quilt will measure approx. 58” x 49” if using an 8 x 7 block layout. The squares can be cut larger to make a larger finished block. So when choosing your fabric keep in mind that the larger the fabric repeat, the more blocks will be yielded.
Choosing the large print focus fabric-How much to buy? If your choice of fabric has:
12” repeat x 4 repeats = 1 3/8 yds
14” repeat x 4 repeats = 1 ¾ yds
16” repeat x 4 repeats =2 yds
18” repeat x 4 repeats = 2 1/8 yds
-Large print focus fabric for blocks- 4 pattern repeats for twin size, 8-12 pattern repeats for a queen to king size.
-1 yd for block border (contrast)
-1/3 yd for inner border (optional)
-2 yd outer border using focus fabric
-1/3 yd corner stones contrasting
-1 yd sashing (twin size) 1 ½ yd for larger
-½ yd for binding (twin size)
-Flat flower pins
-Basic supplies for cutting and sewing machine
Pat will have things for sale from her shop and a trunk show in the afternoon.
Potluck at noon!
Luncheon following Meeting and Program-Group 4 - Joan Chandler, Bette Koeff, Dorothy Climber, Beverly Schabacker, Nancy Trager, Sharon Hays, Jan Pralle, Beverly Lattimer, are responsible for manning the front tables and luncheon. Also one or two should be available by 8-8:15AM to help Pat bring her things in and help her load back up. Roly Poly tables and elevator are available. If you cannot attend that day please let someone in your group know. Thank you to everyone for all your talents!

Fabric Printing

Not so many years ago many of us were surprised and delighted to find that new products made it possible to create labels and transfer photos to fabric with a minimum of fading. The years that followed were a period of challenges and changes that have given us even more possibilities to add to our treasure chest of new found skills. First, let us review our list of tools available to us and new developments that may be coming soon.
It began with attempts at creating fabric labels on our inkjet or bubble jet printers by soaking fabric in vinegar baths or dye setting chemicals to cause the fabrics to hold the ink through washings. The trouble is that vinegar does not work at with the colored inks (thought it work plausibly well with just black ink) and the dye setting chemicals are not designed to work with inks so work poorly (though better than the vinegar).
The first tool to appear on the market was a solution called Bubble Jet Solution. By soaking fabric in this solution and heat set it with an iron. This fabric can then be pressed onto freezer paper and sent through the printer allowing the ink to penetrate the fabric. One has only to follow the directions on the bottle to end up with a very versatile ink printed fabric to use in quilts. Today’s solution does a much better job of holding ink and a second washing solution helps to set the ink even further.
The next set of tools that came to market is a series of prepared fabrics already on papers ready to print. They also make good solutions to our need for fabrics on which to print labels and photos for memory quilts. The problem with these is that one must be careful to choose just the right brand for the use for which we put it. Some brands are stiffer than others and this renders them unsuitable for hand quilting afterward. Others are better suited for hand quilting but, removal of the paper is difficult. All are expensive to use.
Rumors have been circulating lately that Hewitt Packard is developing a new ink specifically designed for fabric printing. Of course at first this ink will be expensive to use. However, if the quilting community as a whole encourages ink developers to make these available the prices will decrease proportionately.
All of these tools will work together to make a permanent design created on a computer and printed on fabric with an inkjet.
Tips for printing on your printer can be found on line with a “Google” search. I am going to give you a few of the most important ones here.
Follow the manufacturer’s directions. Read them each time you use the product. The reason for that is that improvements are sometimes made in the product, which may create a need for a slightly different handling of the process. So save yourself some heartache and read the directions each time.
When pressing fabric onto freezer paper to send through the printer, make the freezer paper about ½” longer than the fabric. Fold the extra paper over the fabric and press down. Place this end into the printer first. This creates a barrier and prevents the rollers of your printer from shredding the edge of the fabric. It also prevents loose threads from tangling in your printer’s rollers.
When you are ready to print be sure to alter your printer’s settings to normal or best. There are several reasons to do this step. One is the more ink placed on the fabric the more likely it will retain its color through washing. The second is that it slows the printer down and prevents jamming when the fabric is fed through.
So what can we do with this design process? Here is a short list of the many ideas being used today.
1. Print family photos for a family tree quilt.
2. Print photos for a memory quilt.
3. Print photos for a scrapbook style wall hanging.
4. Create special labels for your quilts.
5. Scan and print fabric to finish a project.
6. Design your own fabric for the center of a block.
7. Create a quilt of fictional characters from your child’s favorite books.
8. Print sayings onto fabric for a statement you are trying to make (quilters get the point, etc.)
9. Save your child’s (or grandchild’s) first drawings and put them in a quilt.
10. A signature quilt would be neat with photos of each person signing.
I could go on and on but, I think you get the picture!

Workshop and Programs Group News!
There has been a suggestion concerning the Christmas Party and Charity Day months. Since there are no groups scheduled for those months it was suggested that the groups take these over. For instance Group 1 would be responsible for Dec 2007 and Group 2 will be responsible for Jan 2008 and so on with the regular schedules. This will eliminate finding people to chair the Christmas party and to have a luncheon & clean up crew for Jan. It is just something to think about. We can certainly leave things the way they are too. We can take a vote on it later this spring. All Feedback is welcome!
All Groups are responsible for helping the Program/ Workshop gal to unload and reload her things, luncheon and clean up in kitchen. They also need to have the tables and chairs put away or around the tables at the end of day. This group should also help man the sign in table. For New Members and Visitors to enjoy their first visits they need to be guided and that cannot happen if no one is at the sign in table.
The Temple is open at 8 AM. That means one or two gals of your group needs to be at the Temple no later than 8:00-:15 AM to help out.
If you cannot be at the Temple in the morning let your group know or have someone there in your place. If you have to leave early let your group know! The more we work together the more fun we will have!

Murphy's Sewing Laws

Fusible interfacings always fuse to the iron

The serge only eats the customer's garment

If you need 6 buttons, you will find 5 in your button box

The seam you meant to rip out is invariably the other one

When you are in a hurry, the needle eye is always too small

The fabric you forgot to pre-shrink will always shrink the most

The pattern you wanted to make again will have one key piece missing

If you drop something out of your sewing basket, it will be your box of pins, with the cover off

Whenever the construction process is going well, the bobbin thread runs out

The magnitude of the goof is in direct proportion to the cost of the fabric

Your lost needle will be found by your son, husband or brother-in-law, while walking around barefoot

Facings tend to be sewn to the wrong side (Opposite sides attract)

Collar points don't match, and you've trimmed all the seams

The iron never scorches the garment until its final pressing

The steam iron only burps rusty water on light silk fabric

The sewing machine light usually burns out on Sunday

Pinking shears get dull just by looking at them

Gathering threads always break in the middle

The scissors cut easiest past the buttonhole

!!!!!! A warning to all Quilters !!!!!!

Carlene recently had a very bad experience with her Elna Pro Quilters Dream machine. Upon using her walking foot with a decorative stitch that had a backwards motion, the Elna developed a stripped gear. It needed to be sent into the company and cost $125.There was nothing in the guidebook about using the walking foot for any decorative stitching. Carlene would like to warn all quilters this message:
"For those ladies quilting on their regular sewing machines and using a walking foot to make life easier, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT use a decorative stitch with a backward motion included in the stitch. It can ruin the gears in your machine. There are some machines that have a built in walking foot. Check with the dealer or the manufacturer to make sure that you can use the walking foot to quilt with a decorative stitch that includes the backward motion." Carlene

#############

On another note I learned something this past week. Since our class on Patchwork Hearts in February I have become more acceptable to fusible webs. My earlier experiences with it really turned me off and hence I always used the needle turn method for all of my appliquéing. My early experiences were hard quilts, sticky needles and ‘the bulge effect’, you know what I mean…the appliqué character sticks up like a sore thumb while every place else is quilted down because you can’t get a needle through it. That was over 15 years ago. Now the fusibles are so much better. The steam a seam II is excellent to use and is soft and also the light wonder-under 305. I was able to quilt with my machine with no trouble at all.
However I did learn a valuable lesson! Being new to the fusible world and being thrilled to make the little patchwork heart that I thought that I might as well make several! Betty made the class so much fun that I was eager to get at it! So I decided to make 14 of the heart quilts out of the 30’s fabrics (reproduction). I picked out my fabrics, drew out the hearts on the fusible, and proceeded to iron onto 7 fabrics. (there were 7 parts to the hearts). I very happily carried my hearts to my easy chair and started cutting out all the heart parts and put them into neat little piles. I then started to remove the papers and soon realized I had ironed on the fusible to the right side of the fabric. They all had to be tossed in the garbage! I was sick! Well it was a good lesson and I hope I never do that again. After a deep breath I went back to my sewing room and redid my steps except that I ironed the fusible to the backs! I did get all 14 hearts made and am very pleased with them! I seem to learn something new every day!
Always quilting something--- Jenny

Here are some photos taken at March meeting! Hope you all enjoy them!

Here is Kathy Flippin showing her Swirly Quilt done up in the colors of the oceans...blues, turquoise and greens and hints of warm colors! She had it machined quilted in metallic threads! It is beautiful!

Here are several gals who enjoyed the Swirly Quilt Class! With a great start like this we should see several quilt tops by April meeting! Right Girls?

This was a patriotic quilt that Kathy made. She used a setting block that she cut in half diagonally to add interest to her quilt. I say she succeeded!

Kathy created this quilt in navy and browns and again used the setting block that was cut in half diagonally.

Kathy told us that this is an old quilt that a relative made. It is made in soft baby blues, tan, yellow and reds. Completely hand pieced and hand quilted!

Here is one foxy babe who is sporting her recently new jacket that she created using 3 different patterns! Thank you Carlene for modeling your jacket!

Secretary Minutes March 14, 2007 by Joan Chandler

A morning workshop was spent 3with Kathy Flippin making a ‘Swirly Quilt’. Marie opened the meeting with 2 guests. She said the Fons & Porter magazine can be ordered thru the guild at a reduced price.
Rent will be increased to $100 per meeting starting next month. Since we are a non-profit and make charity quilts, our rent may be reduced. Dues may be increased to $20 this fall.

Door prizes won by Marj Bahnsen, Dixie Schaer, Mary Ann Johnson and Nancy Malmin.

Chinese auction winner were Kelsey Jones, Lori Schwarck, Barb De Boer, Marie Senne, Jan Martin and sue Hansen.

Kelsey Jones won the fat quarters! Nancy Malmin asked for members to sign up for ordering patterns of the frayed jacket being made in June workshop. Had Show and Tell. Marie called a board meeting to discuss the proposal increase in rent.

Show and Tell was fantastic!
Marj Bahnsen brought 2 quilts based on Ricky Tims designs-one lap sized in golds, greens and brown and one, minty green with wild animal colors. Very nice!
Carlene Davis brought her son’s queen sized quilt done up in hunting scenes, family pictures and a block of the month from the Bee Hive. She also quilted two charity quilts in the hourglass block motif and created a lovely pumpkin patch jacket started from a sweatshirt. Way to go!
Betty Koeff showed her wonderful Thimbleberries wall hanging-flag, stars, trees and half square triangles-very scrumptious!
Betty Neel showed off many quilts for charity-two blue baby quilt with old fashioned collars cut out and sewed on-very unique-, 3 patchwork ABC’s, 3 patriotic ABC’s and one Linus quilt done up in hearts. Thanks for your generosity!
Minerva Wagner presented her queen sized Mosaic Magic in olives and burgundy that she found in the McCall’s Magazine. The backing was just as pretty!
Mary Ruth Calland showed us her miniature paper pieced quilts. They are the hunters star designed by Kelsey Jones. She did hers in pinks and blues and showed Kelsey’s in dark green and wine. Wow!
Kelsey showed postcards she made- one with a picket fence & winding road and one an orange starburst that could easily be a background for a turkey! Very nice.
Marilyn Meinecke showed off a lovely pink embroidered quilt that will be donated to the cancer project and she also showed us a mouse basket, wooden cat and a cow with bells. Thank you!
