Sympathy
We have lost a very good quilting friend this past Monday Sept 22, 2008. Jan Martin lost her battle with cancer. She will be greatly missed as she always brought her wonderful sense of humor and laughter to the workshops and meetings. She never wavered, when she ‘flubbed’ a block on a project, she would just say “Oh well it’ll add character!” and seemed to always managed to make a work of art in her quilts. Our sympathies to Laurie Schwarck and her family and friends.

Name Tag
You must wear a name tag to be eligible for door prizes! And we want to know who you are!

Lottery block!
The lottery block this month is ‘Anvil’. If you wish to, in honor of the Halloween month, use orange and black for your colors. Or use any color you want. Make a bunch. The more you make the better chance of winning all of them. We thank Macia Hohn for the use of her patterns for lottery! http://www.quilterscache.com/

Mystery Quilt 2009! The finished size is 72” x 72” PART ONE
You can make this Mystery Quilt larger by adding more borders in the end! Here is the first installment of our Mystery Quilt 2009! We should have our quilt done by April or May
First thing is to decide on a color scheme. You will choose a main color in different values from dark to medium-light prints, a medium print accent color, and a light print (this will be background and borders) that sets off your other choices. You can make it scrappy or color coordinated. Choose fabrics that are not large scale print, such as big flowers and etc. stripes may make it interesting but may be harder to incorporate later. If you wish to make the quilt larger you should purchase those fabrics now so that it all will go together.
Dark: 3/8 yard Medium/dark: 3/8 yard
Medium: 2 ½ yards Medium/light: ½ yard
Accent: 1 ¼ yards Light: 5 ½ yards
Border alternative: if you prefer a darker frame for the light background center of your quilt you will need 3 ½ yards of a light/medium

PART TWO: LET’S GET SEWING! (wof=width of fabric)
v From Light, cut lengthwise strips for borders, and set aside
Cut 4: 4 ½” x 75” along lengthwise grain of fabric
Cut 4: 2 ½” x 54” along lengthwise grain of fabric
v Prepare 4-Patch sub-units
Cut 2: 2 ½” x wof strips light
Cut 2: 2 ½” x wof strips medium dark
Cut 2: 2 ½” x wof strips dark
Sew one light strip and one dark strip lengthwise press towards dark.
Sew one light strip and one medium dark strip lengthwise press towards med/dark.
Sew one medium dark strip and one dark strip lengthwise press towards dark.
Sub cut these into 2 ½” segments.
Make 8 light/dark 4-patch units
Make 8 light/med-dark units
Make 4 med-dark/ dark units

2009 Naughty Row by Row Quilt- theme will be ‘HOME’

Fifteen of the most ‘charming’ and ‘nice’ girls will become absolutely ‘naughty girls’ by the end of June 2009! They will be participating in making a Naughty Row by Row quilt.
It’s not too late to sign up for some fun and maybe win a prize! November is deadline!

Row Quilt Rules
Each month you will do ONE row of a quilt following the theme set for that month. The first month YOU will be working on the row for YOUR quilt. After that you will be adding a row to another group member’s quilt. In the end in June 09, you will have 7 rows of a quilt ready to put together. Each row will have been made by a different member of the group, with the first one of them being you. Each of the group members will also have 7 rows to put together into a quilt, with a row by each member including you.

The monthly themes will be associated with HOME. Patterns will be available for that month. December meeting will be the beginning of a 7 Row Quilt! You will receive your brown bag to keep your goodies in at this time. This bag will have your name at the top with names following to be passed to each month. You must bring your bag with your completed first row in January 2009! No excuses. If you can’t bring it to guild make sure your bag gets to the next person. It is not fair for the next ‘Naughty Girl’ to get her bag late!

FABRICS in your bag: You will make your first row of blocks using your colors and/or theme fabric. For the entire quilt, you will want at least 3-4 yards of background fabric. This can be one piece or a bunch of fat quarters to add up to that amount. For rest of quilt you will need approximately 3-4 yards total of various colors that you want into your quilt top. It doesn’t hurt to put extra in your bag. Just remember that the ‘sweet and lovely’ person who has your bag may be naughty and add their own special touch and may not use your fabric for part of that row. Who knows what will happen.

The person, who does the first row of the quilt, is the quilt owner. You set the look and feel for the quilt with that first row using your fabrics. You can use the pattern provided or do your own thing, BUT You must make at least one block- wrong, upside down, sideways, impossible color or a completely make a different block for that row. Remember this is a Naughty Row by Row! Pin your name to row.

Your row should be not less than 40 inches wide & no more than 54 inches wide. It should not be less than 4” high or deeper than 12”. This goes for all rows!

If you have embellishments, think about if they will interfere with quilting it. If they will, put them in a ziplock baggie, for the row owner to add after the quilting is done. Be sure to mark the bag for what row they are to be used on.

Do NOT attach your row to the previous. The rows must remain separated. When all seven rows are completed, and returned to the row quilter owner, she will then assemble the rows into a quilt, using sashing or whatever method she wants to join them together into a quilt. The plan is to show the completed tops/quilts at the August Picnic 2009 and September 2009 guild meeting. PRIZES PRIZES PRIZES! In September we will have a contest on whose quilt was the ‘most naughty’. To qualify for prizes you must have your quilt top together! We will decided later if it needs to be quilted to qualify for prizes.

Hopefully these will be shown as a group in our Quilt Show 2010.
Treat each quilt with respect, keeping it in a clean, dry and safe place. Keep away from direct sunlight, pets and tobacco smoke.
If adding to the row using your own fabrics please use only 100% quality cotton fabrics, nothing with a loose weave and no cotton polyester blends.
And please remember the GOLDEN RULE OF QUILTING: Work on another’s quilt like you would your own! And do not show the owner her rows!
Above all! Have fun and let your imagination run wild!
(These rules will be repeated one more time next month and then will be included with first pattern and your brown bag.)

2010 Raffle Quilt- Cabin Lights
Also included in newsletter flyer is a picture of our 2010 raffle quilt. Due to inevitable circumstances the raffle quilt has been changed to ‘Cabin Lights’. This quilt includes 200 easy blocks and many hands will be needed to make the blocks. It will be color coordinated and kits will be available for members to take home and sew together. Please say yes to Betty and Margaret when asked to make the blocks! Margaret M wishes to apologize for any inconveniences.

Where does a UFO start? -It starts out as a WHIM (Work hidden in my mind). -After a FART (Fabric acquisition Road Trip) and some
-SEX (Stash enhancing experience) it becomes a PIG (Project in a Grocery Sack) -The PIG becomes a HSY (pronounced hissy...means haven't started yet). -Once you have a HSY fit and begin work, it becomes a WIP (work in progress) -The WIP becomes a UFO (Unfulfilled Opportunity, I like that better than Un finished object which sounds so negative) as soon as some other project grabs and holds your attention more than the project that was a WIP. Forget me not by Esther J. White
This quilt behind me I will leave,
When I am in my silent grave,
That my dear friends may view it o’re
And think of me when I’m no more.

Esther obviously believed that all quilts should not just have a signature on them but a short story as well. It is important for future owners of your quilts to know as much about you as possible. With the wonderful pens available these days it is much easier to add that bit about yourself. Please take time to add your life to your quilts. Even if it is only to tell of what was happening in your life during the actual quilt making. By adding this history it will not only enhance your quilts but make them more valuable as well.

(I found this poem in the booklet, ‘Signing and Dating Your Quilts’ by Susan McKelvey 1990.)

Charity Quilts
If you took a charity quilt home with you in June please bring it with you. If you have made a charity quilt or two bring those with you too! Thanks Girls!

Tips for quilting---
-When you are making 1/2 square triangles always sew a SCANT 1/4 inch (rather than a regular 1/4 inch) from the center diagonal line so that the fabric will have a bit more room to flip over when you press it. Most times you can cut your initial squares a FULL 1 inch larger (rather than the standard 7/8 inch) and then just trim them down to the finished size + 1/2 inch for the seams allowances. Easier 'math' and better to be too big and trim down, than to end up being too small.
-when making miniature quilts, hang them without damaging the walls is buy using Poster Tape _ available where regular scotch tape is sold. You use it on painted walls and wallpaper. I am always changing my quilts throughout the year and rearranging so this is the best way to hang them.
-When washing your material to test for coloring fastness.....put in a plain piece of muslin.....even if the water turns color it doesn't mean that the dye will run.....but, if the muslins picks up the color then you will know that it will attach itself to other fabric.
-Metal picnic table clamps work well to clamp quilt backings to the table when layering backing, batting and quilt top for basting. If you can't find them, try carpenters wood clamps or bull dog clamps from the office supply store.
-To separate embroidery floss without tangling: Cut whatever length of floss you need. All six strands. With your left hand, hold the strands t the top. With your right hand, separate just the top of one strand. Now with your right hand holding the one strand at the top, squeeze your two fingers on left hand holding the remaining five strands. Pull the one strand out keeping your fingers kind of tight on the other and it should slide right out.
-If you can’t be kind, be vague.
-Gray thread is a great neutral color for piecing. Take the time to clean the lint from the screens the hoses and vents for your dryer, even if you have to get a helper do do it for you. This is a VERY common cause of house fires.
-Buy a pair of men’s support hose from any discount store. Cut the tops off at the beginning of the heel and fold the long cuff over in two for a perfect support for your wrists while playing/working at the computer!
When sewing together a block with a lot of pieces use removable stickers or Post-It notes to number the pieces.
-Donate that UFO you are never going to finish
-Before you sew on your quilt label, tuck some fabric scraps from the quilt between the label and the quilt then stitch your label on. This way, the fabric scraps get relatively the same amount of wear and tear and washing as the rest of the quilt so you will always have the perfect repair fabrics right with the quilt if ever needed.
-Learn from the mistakes of others. You can't live long enough to make them all yourself.
-Does your back ache after a cutting session on a too low table? Raise it by using Bed Risers, available in most Bed and Bath stores.
