June 2008 Workshop supplies for Trupunto block!
-15 x 15 muslin or light colored solid cotton, sateen, or batiste
-Backing fabric (muslin will work) 15 x 15
-Cotton Batting 16 x 16
-Water- soluble basting thread ( local quilt shop)
-Thread - cotton or machine embroidery thread
-walking foot
-darning foot
-small safety pins
-fabric marker---water erasable---may want to test before class day
-small sharp scissors- blunt or round tipped
-seam ripper
-sewing machine
-Trupunto batting---high loft poly batting-- 2 layers of an 8 oz batting works well or cotton batting. If you prefer less ‘poof’ use a lower loft.
-Gloves for machine quilting are a must. You can use cheap garden gloves or purchase quilting gloves at your local quilt shop. It will make your quilting much easier if you have them with you!
The sample shown above is called a ‘Shadow Trupunto’. To make this colorful you need to bring a Batiste fabric and brightly colored batik for underneath. You may want to audition the batik before you bring it to make sure the color will softly show through. To make a regular Trupunto you need to bring the muslin or light colored fabrics.
Mandy will bring a choice of two patterns for you to transfer at the workshop. Light tables will be available for your use.

Great News Ladies! Put on your best smiles and give yourselves a pat on the back as we will be presenting our 1000th ABC quilt to the head of nursing from Mercy. Jo Best will be doing the honors as she is the one who inspired members several years ago to make these wonderful quilts for Babies in Crisis. KIMT-TV will be there to document the occasion!
Due to family health issue, Carol Post the winner of our Raffle Quilt was not able to be presented with her quilt in May. Carol will be given her quilt this Meeting! Don’t miss this! She is very excited to be the recipient of our beautiful quilt!

An auction of library books. Marie Senne has agreed to be our ‘Auctioneer’! If we don’t have time to get through all the books we will continue the auction at a later date. So Ladies get out your pocket books and bid like crazy! The majority of the library books are less than 10 years old!

From the President: This is my last “official” message as president as my term comes to an end. I want to thank all the board members and officers for their support this year. I know it has seemed a little rough as we got ourselves back on target with our by-laws. Speaking of which, the board will be presenting some updates to the by-laws to vote on. Take some time and look through them. Remember, what we vote on, we need to do. It has been a good year and I look forward to changes in focus as we acquire new members. Please make them welcome.

Please be sure to turn in any and all receipts and invoices for the quilt show to Carlene ASAP so that a financial report can be compiled for the guild members. Also, if you haven't turned in your committee report please so as soon as possible. She would also like to have suggestions for the 2010 show as work is beginning with the committee working on the selection of the pattern for the raffle quilt. Arla Loeffler is selling her custom-made sewing table built by Ron Wunderlich of Mason City. It is made out of Birch and is very solid with a large surface area in which to work on. Mexican Lasagna submitted by Carlene Davis1
1/2 # browned ground beef
1 16 oz. can refried beans, fat free
1 tsp. cumin
2 tsp. oregano
3/4 tsp. garlic powder
4 cups shredded montery jack & sharp cheddar cheese (lite)
12 uncooked lasagne noodles
2 1/2 c. water2 1/2 c. salsa (chunky, mild or medium)
2 c. sour cream (lite)
3/4 c. chopped scallions (green onions)
1 can sliced black olives
Combine beef, spices and beans. Place 4 noodles in bottom of a 9 X 13 pan. Spread 1/2 meat mixture over noodles, layer of cheese. Add 4 more noodles, rest of meat and layer of cheese, 4 more noodles and layer of cheese. Combine water and salsa and pour over all, cover and bake at 350 degrees 1 1/2 hour or until noodles are tender. Combine sour cream, olives and scallions and spread over casserole. Top with layer of cheese. Bake 5 - 10 minutes more uncovered. Serves 8
NIQG Board Meeting, April 29, 2008
Kelsey called meeting to order @ 10 am at Sr. Center. She reviewed officers and chairmen for upcoming election. In addition to previous slate, Ruth C. will vol. for treasurer, Ruth Ward will fill her last year as board member. Cathy K. will be program coordinator.
Discussion was held on changes for library, condition and space for storage unit. It was suggested dispensing with library books. Kelsey will present idea to members at next meeting. Mandy will continue as librarian and help with web-site. Jeanne M. volunteered to be historian.
Mandy has patterns suitable for Linus/ABC quilts. It was decided to publish in future newsletters.
A discussion was held about charging for workshops. Motion by Ruth C. to $10. only if program presenter charge is $ 150. or more. Second by Carlene, motion carried.
It was decided to review current by-laws. Kelsey offered to write duties of librarian and historian positions. Board members are to review by-laws and write suggested changes, then they will be updated at the next board meeting on May 27.
Discussed ideas to promote membership: such as better programs, offer info at functions like NI Fair, quilt shows, and newspaper events column.

Minutes for May 14, 2008
North Iowa Quilters' Guild met May 14,2008, at Covenant Church. The morning workshop was led by Laurie Schwarck on "Trading Patches" project. A pot luck was held at noon.
Kelsey Jones called afternoon meeting to order @ 1 pm. Corrections on memorial names of members who have passed away: add - Eleanor Benjegerdes, John Klein, Norah Hericks, and Dorothy Roby.
Mandy M. reviewed material list for the Trapunto program next month. She showed several samples and answered questions. Look for more details in newsletter. Future programs include; Denise Sprain with " Quilt on the Double" in Sept. and Kris Kerrigan - "Button Weeds" in Oct.
Kelsey explained a quilt challenge for breast cancer awareness. Use patterns from Eleanor Burns' book "Victory Quilts" , in colors of pink, teal, and pale yellow, 10 1/2" blocks, make a 40" X 40" piece. These are due by Oct. 3rd and will be displayed at St. Ansgar. Local quilt shops are sponsoring.
Discussion about library usage and storage unit - Jenny S. made motion to auction books to members at the June meeting, second by Dorothy Birch, motion carried.
Next years' officers were introduced: Pres. - Carlene Davis, V.P. Jenny Schlutz, Sec. - LeNore Forbes, Treas. - Ruth Calland, Board - Norma Jean M., Marlene O. and Ruth Ward. The slate of officers accepted by majority vote.
Carlene told about quilt show winner of the raffle quilt was Carol Post , Manly. She will attend the June meeting to receive the quilt. Viewers choice winners were : 1st- Jo Ann Johnson, 2nd - Kelsey Jones, and 3rd - Jo Best. Prizes were awarded.
Betty Neel announced garage sale with NIQ member, Arlene Christensen's sewing items included.
Door prizes won by: Jan Martin, Betty Neel, Mandy M. Kelsey J., Thelma Bohn, Marian Hoit, Dorothy B. Ruth Ward, and Betty Werle.
Chinese auction winners were: Kelsey J.x3, Jo B., Marge B. Jan Pralle, Cathy K. Carlene D., Norma Jean M., Wilma Ades, Jenny S., Nancy M.x2, Kathy Coverdale x2, Margaret M., Kim Sime, Dorothy W. Sue H. and Barb DeBoer.
Nancy M. announced details of bus trip to MN. Quilt show June 27. She will take reservations today.

IMPORTANT NOTICE!
The By-Laws have been updated and are included in this newsletter. Please everyone look it over and be ready to vote on it at the June meeting.
Memberships Dues ($20) can be paid now for the upcoming 2008-2009 fiscal year. Membership expires on June 30th. Paying now ensures updated password entry to all patterns on our web site. It also helps out the Membership Chair to get out the phone lists by September Meeting. Forms will be available at June meeting and at Picnic in August. Also it will be in July & August newsletter. You may also down load the membership form off our website. Deadline to be included on membership phone list it August 30th, 2008. These forms are to be presented to Marlene Oswood.
12 Stamped and Addressed Envelopes need to be brought to Jenny by September to ensure a hard copy newsletter to be mailed to you. However if you don’t wish to have a newsletter mailed to you, you may read it on line. The only disadvantage to this is that patterns are copy written and many cannot appear on our website in any form but may have permission to appear in our hard newsletter.
Officers, Board and all Chairs need to have written reports of your area ready by July 8th, 2008 Board Meeting. Please outgoing and incoming officers, board and chairs BE present. Board meeting at 9:30am at the Senior Center located on 326 4th St N E in Mason City.
Habitat for Humanity
A quilt was presented to Michelle Morhring who has two teenage daughters on May 30th. This home was built at 119 16th NW in Mason City. Thank you Jo Best for representing us! This is our 32nd quilt!
Show and Tell!
Jo Ann Johnson brought her award winning Carpenter’s Wheel! Jo Best showed off her Sudoku and Robin Row by Row. Barb DeBoer brought 4 very cute ABC quilts. Cathy Knowles showed her Round Robin from the internet group. Pat Klinger awed us with her huge 4 Patch Posie!
Jenny Schlutz showed 6 quilts made for the Women’s Health Center. Kelsey Jones brought 2 Robin Row by Rows and 2 floral quilts. Carlene Davis showed off her Robin Row by Row and a sweet little teddy bear quilt. Vivien Bugbee presented us with 4 quilts of teddy bears and bunnies, ABC quilt, a bright scrappy blocks quilt and a ‘Boys will be boys’. Very nice! Margie Brandl showed us her really cute springy wool runner. Dorothy Birch wowed us with her lattice strips she made in workshop! Boy we hope to see it finished this month! Laurie Schwark showed different setting of the strips done her workshop. And Marilyn Meinecke showed her apron Bib, denim purse and duck puppet.
The lottery block this month is something new or should we say ‘old’! Bring any ‘old’ block/s for the Lottery. The more ‘old’ blocks you bring, gives you more chances to win all of them for a very unique quilt! Time to get rid of that UFO not quite together! Now Ladies, don’t forget to put your name in for the drawing! Just because you are finally unloading those ‘old’ blocks doesn’t mean you can’t win them back along with other ‘old’ blocks and end up making a beautiful quilt to share with us!
The block of the month is the Bear Paw Variation! It is 12” finished.
The following is a rough graft of the 2005 Amended By-Laws drawn up on May 27th, 2008 by Kelsey Jones, Carlene Davis and Jenny Schlutz. The underlined areas are the amended changes to be approved by the NIQG members in June.
NORTH IOWA QUILTERS GUILD
2005 AMENDED BY-LAWS
ARTICLE 1
PURPOSE
The Guild shall be a non-profit organization with the purpose of educating, stimulating interest in, and appreciation for the art of quilting. The Guild shall be managed by a Board consisting of an Executive Committee and Directors. The Executive Committee consists of duly elected officers.
ARTICLE 2
BOARD
Section 1. The immediate past President shall be ex-officio member of the Board with voting privileges in case of tie votes. Any vacancies in the Board shall be filled for the un-expired term by appointment by remaining members of the Board.
Section 2. A majority of the Board shall constitute a quorum for the transactions of any business and a simple majority of the quorum may decide any questions.
Section 3. The Board shall meet a minimum of three times during the year and is at the call of the President.
Section 4. The Board shall have supervision, control and direction of the affairs of the Guild.
Section 5. The Board shall have the authority to supervise the use of the funds.
ARTICLE 3 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
Section 1. Executive committee of the Guild shall be President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. The Officers are elected by a majority vote of the membership in May. Newly elected officers take over their duties after the June meeting, and out-going officers act as advisors until the September meeting of the same year. The term shall be one year, with three months as acting advisor unless otherwise stated.
Section 2. The duties of the President shall be to preside over all meetings and protect the welfare of the Guild including keeping the lock box with legal documents. The President shall serve one year as ex-officio member of the Board. The President will be able to sign checks for the Guild and has the authority to cancel any event or meeting because of the weather. The President shall collect and disperse the written committee reports to the newly appointed officers and chairpersons.
Section 3. The Vice President shall fill the term of the President in the case of emergency vacancy in that office for the remainder of the term. As Vice President, this person is obligated to succeed to the office of the President. The Vice President’s duties will include selection committee chairman for special events such as bus trips, quilt show, Fair and other boards approved events, and maintain membership files for fiscal year. The Vice President will be responsible to the President to report the progress of such committees.
Section 4. The Secretary’s duties shall be to record and be custodian of the minutes of the meetings. Additional duties include all correspondence, notices to the media regarding meetings and cancellations.
Section 5. The Treasurer’s duties shall be to collect and take charge of all dues and funds made available to the Guild. Any single expenditure, exceeding $25 (except bus trips) must be authorized by the Board. The treasurer shall keep a written account of all transactions involving the Guild in a book belonging to the Guild. The Treasurer’s books will be audited at the end of each June.
ARTICLE 4 DIRECTORS
Section 1. The Directors shall consist of five elected members, each serving 2 years, 3 elected in one year and 2 the following year.
Section 2. The Directors are responsible for appointing a committee of two to audit the Treasurer’s books, a Guild historian, Program chairman, Nominating committee, Pattern committee, Membership chairman, Quilt Show chairman, Charity quilts chairman, Web Administrator, and Newsletter Editor.
ARTICLE 5 MEETINGS
Section 1. The North Iowa Quilters Guild will meet the second Wednesday of each month at designated place other than the month of July.
ARTICLE 6 COMMITTEES
Section 1. The program chairman will coordinate programs for the year following her appointment. She will work during her first year planning the next year’s program and the second year she will introduce speakers and programs. Programs exceeding $100 must have approval of the Board, & a minimal amount of $40 will be offered to members who give a lecture.
Program chairman shall also be responsible for updating hostess groups for each month and maintaining Supplies Cabinet.
Section 2. The Historian will collect publicity, snapshots and all information pertinent to the history of the Guild. Scrap books will be kept in the guild supply cabinet and shall maintain these articles in said cabinet.
Section 3. The 2-person nomination committee appointed by the Directors will be formed no later than March. Nominations will be submitted to membership in April for the elections to be held in May.
Section 4. A two person auditing committee should complete audit of the Treasurer’s books before the deadline of July 1 of that year.
Section 5. Duties of the pattern committee will be to select and disperse educational patterns of the month and work with the Board on quilt projects, and see the quilt project to its completion.
Section 6. The duties of the membership chairman will be to register members and guests, collect dues and balance with the Treasurer, make out and sign membership cards and print complete membership list by September meeting with Membership drive to begin in May.
Section 7. Quilt Show Chairman shall organize and direct the necessary committees for the biennial quilt shows.
Section 8. Web Administrator is responsible for maintaining the Guild Web site, posting photos blog, and newsletter to newsletter blog. The web Administrator will also be responsible for making sure the guild pays the fees for http://www.niqg.org/ domain with Yahoo.com. A notebook with passwords and pertinent information shall be kept for future reference.
Section 9. Charity Quilt Chairman shall be responsible for keeping track of the number of quilts being donated to each charity, submitting new easy to follow patterns periodically throughout the year to maintain interest in charity quilts, coordinating January Charity Day activities, getting reports from charity members on what their charity needs are and making sure that they receive quilts appropriated for their charity. Chair members will be chosen for each charity we service and will be responsible for the delivery of said quilt to their charity.
Section 10. Newsletter Editor shall be responsible for creating, having publishing and distributing of an easy to read newsletter, with up-to-date information by the end of the each month. She shall submit a digital copy to the web Site Administrator for posting or posting the newsletter herself. The Editor will also be responsible for any and all advertising.
Section 11. Each committee chairman shall maintain a notebook and submit a written report of pertinent information necessary to complete her duties. This report should be given to the incoming President at the end of the project or at the current year as scheduled by President to the new chair person or officer.
ARTICLE 7 MEMBERSHIP
Section 1. Membership shall be open to any person. Membership is open to internet members, who shall have the same privileges and responsibilities as any other member.
Section 2. Membership dues shall be payable commencing with the May meeting of each year in an amount to be determined by the Board. Previous Membership expires on June 30th of each year.
Section 3. A guest may attend one time without becoming a member. Guests are required to sign the guest book.
Section 4. Members may be required to show their membership cards at the door for each meeting.
Section 5. Workshops:
a. Memberships required for workshops, fees may be required.
b. Any workshops open to the public, will be charged accordingly.
c. Special requirements may be levied.
ARTICLE 8 GENERAL
Section 1. Each member shall have one vote and there shall be no proxy voting.
Section 2. The By-laws may be amended at any meeting by a majority vote of the general membership upon recommendation of the Board.
Section 3. In the event of the disbanding of the North Iowa Quilters Guild, monies in the Treasury after all final expenses have been paid shall be dispersed, at the discretion of the immediate Board, to a quilt related organization such as museum, library, research project etc.
