September 9, 2009

Hello Everyone! Fall is upon us! It’s time to start digging in your stashes or better yet visit the local quilt shops and start creating quilts! Oil up that machine! Put your foot on the pedal and sew like the dickens!

Workshop for this month will be presented by the delightful Denise Sprain. She has graced us with wonderful workshops and programs for many years! As you know Denise hails from Iowa Falls and works in the amazing quilt shop called Iowa Falls Sewing Machine.
Denise says, “This year we will be working out of the book, ‘Scrap Basket Surprises’ from That Patchwork Place. You may purchase the book for 24.95. This whole book is based on using 2 ½” strips. A great way to use Jelly rolls or Bali Pops! Or cleaning out the Scrap Basket! We will be creating ‘Little Tangy’- page 67. I have sent the sample just like the picture but any color combo will work, the strips need to be the full 42” wide for this project.
I have this started in Kansas Troubles using 2 ½ yards of one fabric and 33 strips of contrasting colors. This will be done by September. Same technique but completely different look. If you want a kit for Little Tangy in the yellow-orange version or Kansas Troubles version it is $67.50. This can be made bigger by adding more blocks.”
“Here’s what you need to bring with you: Little Tangy 51” x 63”
1 yard yellow print for inner border and binding
66 strips- 2 ½” of assorted yellow, orange and green prints for blocks- jelly rolls will work- the colors just need to work together, no background needed.
Kansas Troubles version- 2 ½ yards one fabric that contrasts with the other 33- 2 ½” strips.
3 ¾ yards of backing
55” x 67” batting
You must have either a 3 ½” ruler or a 4” or a 6” ruler, my preference is the 3 ½”.
A rotating matt is very helpful-but not necessary.
I have the 3 ½” ruler for $6.19.
We have 4” and 6” rulers and rotating mats. I will bring these along.
If you need the book, kits or rulers please call 1-800-238-1902 and reserve what you need.
If you would like to work ahead have your 2 ½” strips cut.
Even in the Kansas Troubles version the constant fabric is even cut up into 2 ½” strips.
Sew the strips together making sure that you have contrast between the strips.
I sewed a dark strip to all the constant 2 ½” strips from Kansas Troubles constant fabric.
I will present a short program on what’s new in the shop. See you all soon! Denise”

Naughty Row by Row Reveal!
What a hoot that was! There are some very naughty girls in the group! We all had a good laugh at many of the rows that were shown. We enjoyed upside down coffee cups, spilled cups, cups with no handles, to coffee cups made in reverse colors. We saw a Christmas tree with a star so heavy it was bent over! I sure hope Nancy has fun getting that row in her quilt! (Sorry Nancy I couldn’t resist). We saw blocks that were not supposed to be in the quilt! We witnessed rows that were very short, very long and some even going in the ‘up and down’ position. We examined blocks that were running loose!
We saw rows that were sewed into squares! I was lucky to have two of those in my naughty quilt! Gee thanks girls! You girls are so very talented and creative! We saw wild rows with a ‘zinger or two’ in them! We saw outhouses, tree houses, stars, cows, flowers and bugs! That really spices up the quilts. We saw amazing embroidery and awesome appliqué! You name it, these quilts have it all!
The Naughty Row quilts will be a wonderful group hanging at our next quilt show in April 2010! Now that you all have your rows, be thinking of getting them together! You will have until January to finish them and qualify for some very nice prizes donated by Dixie Schaer.
I have the Naughty Quilt labels ready for you. Please see me to get yours at our September meeting! They are ready for you to write any info you wish. You certainly don’t want to forget who created those crazy rows! I hope you all had a wonderful and exciting time with this project! I know I did!
Laurie Schwarck will have a project in the works soon for us to enjoy later in the year. Jenny

Newman High School $3 admissions
Friday April 16th at 4PM will be set up time.
Regular Quilt Show meetings will be held at the guild meetings. Carlene will have signup sheets to work different areas. She will be expecting your input for ideas as well as working the show. It takes all of us to make the show successful. Please do what you can! We appreciate all your talents! We have had many wonderful show and tell quilts. Be thinking of showing them and finishing up new projects. It would be really nice to have the Blue Berry Hill quilts hanging together too. Everyone has such wonderful ideas when it comes to colors and you all certainly showed your talents there! And of course the Naughty Row quilts would be fun to show. You never know who you might inspire to become a quilter with all your talents out there for everyone to see! That’s what happened to me at your 1990 quilt show. Through much trial and a lot of errors and still learning, I became a quilter that day!
Raffle tickets are ready. All members are expected to purchase 10 tickets for $10. You may sell them or enter your name to win the ‘Cabin Lights’ quilt. Please help sell tickets at any events in your area. Money from the sales, funds the guild for 2 years.
