The North Iowa Quilters Guild has moved to the First Covenant Church located on Hwy 18/122 on the East end of town. The address is 410 S. Ohio. It is south, across the street from St. James Lutheran church. It is A-framed in shape. There is a large parking area in back of church. The entrance to use is the south east door. There is a sidewalk that curves around to that door. We hope to have a sign visible for members to see. We will have use of their kitchen, kitchenette and meeting area. A Quilter’s Dream come true!
‘Twas the night before Christmas,
And the quilts were not made.
The threads were all tangled, the cookies delayed.
The stocking weren’t hung, the pantry was bare.
The poor weary Quilter, was tearing her hair.
Stacks of fat quarters, tipped over in streams.
Visions of Log Cabins, had turned into dreams.

When what to her wondering eyes should appear,
But a bus full of quilters with all of their gear.
They went straight to work with just a few mutters,
Sorting and stitching and brandishing cutters.
The patterns emerged from all of the clutter,
Like magic the fabrics arranged in a flutter.
Log Cabins, Lone Stars, Flying Geese & Bear Tracks
Each quilt was a beauty-even the backs.

Her house how it twinkled, her quilts how they glowed.
The cookies were baking, the stockings were sewed.
Their work was all done, so they folded their frames,
And packed up their needles, without giving their names.
They boarded the bus, and checked the next address.
More quilts to be made, another quilter in distress.

She heard one voice echo, as they drove out of sight,
Happy quilting to all and to all a good night!

9AM-noon Workshop by Jenny Penny Designs
‘Quilt as You Go’ Black Bear Valley Tote
Come join us for a fun morning in creating a ‘quilt as you go tote’! Be ready to sew by 9AM.

Things you will need to create your tote:
Note: I used Homespun fabrics for the inside and outside of tote. For the actual tote, you may use whatever fabrics that suit your tastes! A plain piece of flannel, works best in place of thin batting. This can be anything you don’t want to see any more! It will be covered! For the appliqués you may need a machine that has at least a zig-zag stitch on it. Or you may blanket stitch by hand.
-wof-means width of fabric.
Backing (inside tote): 25” x wof.
Flannel (batting): 25” x wof.
Strips: (outside tote & handles): 28-30 2” strips.
Binding (for handles & tote opening): three 2” x wof strips
Black Bear: 9” x 15” rectangle.
Star: 7” x 7” square.
Pine Tree: 5” x 18” rectangle.
Fusible paper or sketch paper for needle turn.
Sewing machine, iron, rotary cutter, board & general sewing supplies.
Note: If you do not have sketch paper or fusible paper I will bring some for you to use.
Class is free to members other than purchasing a pattern or kit. Cost of pattern is $7 or kits which includes pattern & everything (except fusible) you need is $23. Kit only is $16. If you have not reserved your kit, you must call ahead 641-424-9068. As of this writing there are 2 left.
I have 2 new patterns just out this past week. One is called ‘Freedom’ Something to Crow About and Little Red Barn. I will be bringing my Jenny Penny Designs patterns and kits for sale for you to browse through. These will be available until end of meeting day. Thank you ladies! Now let’s have some fun!

Exciting news from President Kelsey Jones!
I am excited to tell you all that the board has found a New Home for North Iowa Quilters Guild!
Change of our new ‘Meeting Place’ will take effect on December 12, 2007. Due to rising costs from $60 a month to $100 a month, we have had to search for a new home. The Masonic Temple has been the home of NIQG for many years. We are thankful for the use of their facility. It has been a wonderful place to meet, but no longer cost effective.
The North Iowa Quilters Guild will be moving to the First Covenant Church located on Hwy 18/122 on the East end of town. The address is 410 S. Ohio. It is slightly west and across the street from St. James Lutheran church. It is A-framed in shape. There is a large parking area in back of church. The entrance to use is the south east door. We hope to have a sign visible for members to see.
We will have use of their kitchen and meeting area. There is plenty of room for workshops and programs. The new rent will be $50 a month. Moving day will take place at the end of November’s luncheon. We will need your help to transport the library and any other things that belong to us. Jenny will bring a cart and Mandy is providing a truck for the library holder. We will need some sturdy boxes for the books & etc.
Please plan to at least help load up vehicles before you leave. If you help with the move, it will give you an opportunity to see our new home! Thanks everyone for all your help! We hope all of you will continue to enjoy our upcoming workshops and programs!
---Kelsey Jones

Is your quilt in UFO status?
Good Lord Girl! Why isn’t that quilt finished? What is it that makes one quilt, from beginning to end, get done in one week and another quilt barely gets off the drawing board…and ends in the empty drawer for all eternity….did I say empty drawer? Oh come on now. We all know there is no such thing! That drawer is probably busting out all over with other neatly folded UFOs that didn’t quite get to the sewing machine.
Maybe one reason that particular quilt did not get to the sewing machine is that it was not thought out quite like you would have wanted to. Maybe it was a pattern too difficult to make quickly or your colors just didn’t mesh how you had planned. Or maybe you didn’t plan at all and grabbed what ever you had in your stash. Sometime those make great scrappy quilts with the right pattern. And sometimes you end up with dogs (no pun intended with 4 footed dog lovers-I am a dog lover myself). What ever the reason, it is time to open that drawer and take stock of what you have attempted.
If you have more than 5 UFOs…ok let’s get real here…25 UFOs, it is time to take them out one at a time and really decide if you are going to finish it. If after 5 minutes of scoping out the blocks and you cannot say “Yes I will take it right to my machine and get these blocks together now”…then it is time to pass that project along to someone who will see it and say “Wow! I love it! I cannot wait to get it together and quilted!”
If you take out that UFO and see it for the first time in years, and say to yourself “Wow I forgot I had this! I love it! I cannot wait to get it together and quilted!” Then get with it Girl! Get that quilt finished and out on a bed or hanging on a wall or better yet give it as a gift to your loved one or sell it! It is not doing you any good sitting in a drawer!
Maybe your UFO is only in the ‘haven’t cut it out yet’ stage but have the pattern with it. Check out the fabric. Lay it out in a well lit room and put the pattern next to it or on the fabric. Ask yourself “Do I still want to make this quilt using this pattern or should I put the uncut fabric with my stash for another project?” If the answer is yes I want to make this quilt…take that fabric immediately to the cutting board and get those blocks together just as fast as you can and you will have a quilt top in no time! To heck with the family dinner!
The next logical step would be to take it to the ‘Long Armers’ or quilt it yourself. If the answer is “No” then you know what to do with it. Oh no I don’t mean put it with your stash…It may never get used again and maybe it is time to take it to a flea market and sell it to your quilting friends! I am sure someone will fall in love with the fabric and eventually it will become a quilt! Plus it will give you money in which to buy more fabric that you will really love for your next project. And I don’t mean a UFO!
Ok, after going through all and I do mean ‘all,’ your UFOs, you should have a pretty good idea of just what you can finish and what you will not. Don‘t every feel guilty about your decisions! That is plain silly! Whether you keep your UFOs or not someone will finish that quilt whether it is in the next week or the next 50 years.
One tip that you might want to include in with the UFO, that is leaving the drawer for another quilter, is put any info that you would like with the blocks or fabric that made it special for you in the beginning. Maybe you could add your thoughts as to why you bought the fabric and pattern in the first place. What ever information you add to the UFO that is moving into another home will be a really cool thing for the quilter’s tag on the back of your finished UFO!
Girls! Get those UFOs out in the world for all to see! Always quilting something---Jenny Schlutz

Corine Sills, who works with the Foster Care Program, along with Al Yad, need your help. The organization is in desperate need of diaper bags that can be left with the children when they are placed into foster care.
If you would like to help with filling this need contact Ruth Calland or Kelsey Jones for the pattern. When the bags are completed, contact Ruth Calland at (641)583-2006 and she will pick them up, if needed, and deliver them to Corine Sills for the children. Thank you in advance for the children. ---Jo Best, Sec.

Habitat for Humanity
Several Habitat Homes are in the works and seem to get done very close to each other. Jo Best will need more quilts soon. Here is a variation of the traditional Log Cabin Block with an appliquéd heart. With the heart in the center of each block it will make for a very warm quilt. If you would like to make some blocks for her please feel free to make as many as you want. When appliquéing the heart to the center of block please machine it down or hand stitch the edges. It also does not matter which way the heart is facing whether it is upside down or sideways! Also the instructions say to use Debbie Mumm fabrics. You do not have to use that unless you want. You just need to use light and darks so that there is a contrast. Thank you to everyone who makes the blocks! Jo Best

Note from our President Kelsey Jones:
It is with great anticipation that I look forward to the next year with all of you. We have so many exciting things happening. Our new officers and new committee members have more new ideas they are just itching to share with you.
With our quilt show just nine months away we really need to start getting things done to be ready for a really big show. We are going to have a separate juried section for those who would like to compete in a juried program. This is really good for learning what improvements we can focus on to become even better quilters than we already are. Sometime in the next few months I will ask Jenny to rerun the article on what the judges look for in quilts.
With the wild weather we have been getting lately I have been trying to check up on those in the paths of flooding and mudslides. So far everyone has been fine. However, that brings me to the thought that if anyone finds themselves in the middle of something and can use help, pick up a phone and let us know. Quilters are like family and we are here to help each other.
We will be having a board meeting this month and I would like those involved with the quilt show to attend. It will be at 11 am so we can enjoy our lunch in the “big room.” We will try to make it short and sweet. If you have any thoughts or problems to bring to the meeting please do so.
Meanwhile stay safe and think quilty thoughts.
Kelsey Jones - President

Membership dues are $20. Please bring to Marlene Oswood.

I have enjoyed being your President this past year and a big Thank You to my Officers and Board members. This past year has been a lot of fun. We did some interesting things and had some interesting guests. Without everyone working together as groups it would not have happened. Again a big THANK YOU to everyone that helped with the June 6 dinner, it really helped our budget. It takes a lot to keep a guild this large going. This year we have had several new members come in and that's fantastic! WELCOME YA'LL
Now its time to look ahead--- a new year--- you know IDLE HANDS DO THE DEVILS WORK so- let’s not be idle, get those fingers flying, scissors cutting and make QUILTS so in the Spring we can have a awesome QUILT SHOW.
Board meeting 11:00 at Clear Lake. Please try to be present. Remember to bring any books, notes, or suggestions to pass on to the next person. See ya'll in August! President Marie Senne

Remember Lucille Keeling who brought all those wonderful hand appliquéd/quilted quilts for a program last spring? Well she has invited us to their guild for a fun day of learning new techniques in quilting!

A note from Keepsake Quilters of Cedar Falls:

Dear Quilters,
Sisters, Cathy Audley and Sue Chaffee of Kansas are coming to our guild Aug 20th, 2007 to teach two workshops-Bobbin-work and Machine Trupunto. Classes are being offered to non-members as long as there are openings after Aug 1. Cost for nom-members is $35. Classes are from 9am – 3pm at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church-4000 Hudson Road, Cedar Falls (one mile south of UNI dome). Bring sack lunch or go out and get something. We furnish morning coffee and treats. Plan to stay for our evening meeting and hear the sister lecture ‘Sister Speak’. To reserve your spot please contact: Lucille Keeling 1-319-987-2051.

If anyone is interested to attend these classes, the supply list is available at the sign in table at meeting.

To prevent your quilt label from being removed easily, quilt right through it!
To make your thimble fit better, give it a shot of warm breath!
A pillow on your lap may help you keep a more comfortable when hand piecing, appliquéing or quilting your project! This is the way I learned to quilt from my Mom!
Instead of wrapping paper use fabric!
Workshops and Programs
All Groups are responsible for helping the Program/ Workshop gal to unload and reload her things, luncheon and clean up in kitchen. They also need to have the tables and chairs put away or around the tables at the end of day.
This group should also help man the sign in table. For New Members and Visitors to enjoy their first visits they need to be guided and that cannot happen if no one is at the sign in table.
The Temple is open at 8 AM. That means one or two gals of your group need to be at the Temple no later than 8:00-:15 AM to help out. If you cannot be at the Temple in the morning let your groups know or have someone there in your place. If you have to leave early let your group know! The more we work together the more fun we will have!

No meeting this month!

North Iowa and Southern Minnesota may be a very hot and humid place to live in the summer time, but it is beautiful too. Summer has arrived in its full glory of brightly hued flowers and the greens of freshly mowed lawns and gently blowing trees! The corn in the fields is reaching for the sunny blue skies and the beans are thriving along the country gravel roads. The ditches are beginning to show off our state flower, the wild rose, planted by nature along with a multitude of buttercups, lilies, mustard, cone flowers, daisies, poppies and a myriad of other prairie plants. The horses, cattle and sheep are grazing lazily about in their lush green pastures. With the summer heat upon us, it is wonderful to grab a good read and settle in a favorite lawn chair under a shade tree. Or better yet take some hand work out with you and enjoy the fresh air.

North Iowa Fair Time! July 25th-29th!
We will be setting up on Tuesday the 24th at 3PM.
There are lots of empty spaces on the sign up sheet; we need you to help man the booth. There will be information about our guild and others in the area available for people to take. Please sign up for a couple of hours! You may bring something to work on. It creates interest and People love to watch a quilt in progress!
We need your quilts for display! We also need a lamp, chairs, fans, small table and any quilt racks or hoops to help display quilts. I believe someone has an easel in which to show our sign. Please come help fix up our booth and volunteer to set for a couple of hours!

August 8th, 2007
Annual NIQG Picnic will be held at the
Pavilion in City Park in Clear Lake.
It is located on lake side of band shell.

Kelsey’s Korner--------Color Tips and Terms

Using only pure primary and secondary colors (no black or white mixed in them) will give you a very vibrant and exciting quilt.
Using complementary colors that are the ones opposite on a color wheel will make the colors very distinct and have a truer value.
Bleeding is when you use two colors that are next to each other on the color wheel to give the area a soft effect, for example placing red next to orange.
The depth of the color refers to how close or far away a color feels. Warm colors such as yellow, orange and red always feel closer than cooler colors such as blues, purples and greens. As a general rule the darker the color the further away it appears
Black and white are fantastic colors for a base. Black will dim other colors, whereas white will brighten the same colors when dyeing in most situations. When used as background Black will brighten and white fade. Both black and white are great to use as "filler" material, runners or sashing.
Colorfast materials are an absolute godsend! If you are not sure if your fabric is colorfast test it by dipping a sample in hot water and squeezing it out. If no color (dye) is excreted then it is colorfast. It is always a good idea to wash all your material before you make your quilt in order to prevent problems from occurring later on.
Cool colors are soothing and calming, they are generally blues, greens and purples.
Warm colors are exciting and stimulating, they are generally reds, oranges and yellows. These colors will often brighten a room. However, if you are wanting to have the quilt on your bed and the colors are very bright you may be better choosing fabrics with the colors that have been mixed with a bit of white - this will tone them down and making them a little more soothing.
Red and green applique' with a white or cream background are the most common combination from the 1800s.
The value of a color is the degree of lightness or darkness. If you add white is called a tint, if you add black it is called a shade.

Tone is the lightness or darkness of a color.
Monochromatic means many values of one color. Achromatic means without color, i.e. using only neutral colors.

Contrasting values occurs when a light color is placed next to a dark color. This can make the light color look bigger. For example, put a yellow circle on a purple or blue background and it will look much bigger than the blue circle on a orange background. This will also work with tone where if you put a shape with a light tone on a dark toned color it will look larger than the opposite.

When someone refers to country colors they are speaking about the colors usually inspired by nature's hues - warm browns, yellow, tree green, sunset red and blue skies, purple wildflowers.

Wool Flowers-30” x 39” by Jenny Penny Designs
The final wool flower block is the violet. To finish, you will need a piece of wool or felted wool backing 32” x 41” and pins (safety work the best). However, if you wish to put tongues around your quilt you will need 46-3” black wool squares and 46-3” colored squares. From these squares use the template in previous newsletter to cut these out. Next pin the tongues and machine blanket stitch or hand blanket stitch around the curved edges leaving the straight edge open. The straight edges will be inserted between the top and backing. If you have questions on construction please let me know! continued→
If you wish to purchase the Wool Flowers pattern in its entirety you may get them from the Bee Hive Quilt Shoppe or Jenny. I have seen many blocks being stitched and they are wonderful! I hope everyone is enjoying this project!

Starting in September our new Pattern Chairperson, Laurie Schwarck will present us with fun projects ahead! She has some nifty ideas stirring in the weeds for us in our next new quilt year! Read your newsletter or check out our website for details!

Comfort Quilts are folded and in a clear plastic bag in the back hall at the Masonic Temple. There is a blank signature label on each quilt so that they are ready to go when we need them for our members. There are 3 quilts ready for members at this time.

Thank you ladies!
A bunch of flannels have been donated to the HOTQ’s (Hooked on Tuesday Quilters) group to make charity quilts with. There were several heart cutouts all ready to go to take and appliqué. I am very pleased to tell you that every block was taken! That is close to a 150 or better….I never did count them. Several blocks have already been returned! You have the whole summer to complete them! You may use iron on if you wish! You can return these to Laurie or Jenny in August or September!
With the remaining flannels, I will cut them into 9 patches to be sewed for alternate blocks. These will be available at August and September meetings. Putting the hearts and the 9 patches together should make some really nice cozy quilts.
Thank you! Thank you!

Betty Neel brought her “Blue Bird” wall hanging that she won on a Chinese auction! Blue Bird is a Jenny Penny Design. Super nice work! Jeroldine presented her beautiful Basket quilt. It was part of the challenge. Jerrie did a wonderful job of appliquéing and piecing. The machine quilting done by Marie was extremely nice and fitting for the queen sized quilt.

Marie Senne has a few words…
I have enjoyed being your President this past year and a big Thank You to my Officers and Board members. This past year has been a lot of fun.

Wool Flowers-30” x 39” by Jenny Penny Designs
The 11th wool flower block is the Pansy. It is getting close to the end of appliquéing the blocks. When you have all your blocks together I will help you to get them laid out for securing if you need.
You will need a piece of wool or felted wool backing 32” x 41” and pins (safety work the best).
If you wish to purchase the Wool Flowers pattern in its entirety you may get them from the Bee Hive Quilt Shoppe or Jenny. I hope everyone is enjoying this project!

June Lottery Block
With the sound of fireworks just around the corner we thought patriotic fat quarters would be in keeping for this month’s lottery block! Just bring a fat and put your name in bag as often as many fats you bring. More fats you bring the more chances to win all of them!

Comfort Quilts are folded and in a clear plastic bag in the back hall at the Masonic Temple. There is a blank signature label on each quilt so that they are ready to go when we need them for our members. There are 3 quilts ready for members at this time.

A comfort quilt and card was given to HOTQ member Judy Magner who was suddenly diagnosed with Acute Leukemia during the week of May 23rd.

Your Raffle Quilt Block!

We are winding down the quilt year with great achievement! Many charity quilts have been created and given to very thankful recipients! We have had several great workshops and programs that were fun and educational, and are scheduled up through January 2008! Thank you everyone for helping with your talents and time!
We have a quilt show to plan for April 2008. We will need your quilts and you to make it successful! The Raffle Quilt 2008 is in the works. We hope to have it completed by September 2007 to sell tickets on. Remember that the ticket sales fund the guild for 2 years.
Membership dues will be increased to $20 starting in August. It’s the same everywhere. Gas is outrageous! Fabric prices keep going up! Geesh! What’s a gal to do! Even though we will be saving $500 in rent with serving the June dinner at the Masonic, it still costs a lot to put on a quilt show. We also are the only quilt group in our area that has an all day workshop/program going on once a month! So really the cost of memberships is very worth your while.
There is no meeting in July but you will receive a newsletter. If there is something you would like to put in the newsletter please have the news item to Jenny by June 23rd.
Don’t miss out! Join us again next August for our annual picnic. Have a safe and fun summer! Jenny

That means one or two gals of your group needs to be at the Temple no later than 8:00-:15 AM to help out.
If you cannot be at the Temple in the morning let your groups know or have someone there in your place. If you have to leave early let your group know! The more we work together the more fun we will have!

North Iowa Fair coming soon!
Dixie Schaer wants everyone to be thinking about the North Iowa Fair that will be during the week of July 25-29th. She will need quilts and workers to help promote our club and others in our area.

Some news from the board…
Just a reminder to all who signed up to help serve at the dinner- You will be contacted soon from Marie to be given details on your job.
(A recap): The Masonic Temple was contemplating on raising our rent to $100 a month from $60. During negotiations it was agreed that if we helped to serve one dinner (a very relaxed affair) on June 6th that we would receive 5 free months of meetings. We also have the opportunity of serve a smaller dinner in October for an additional 3 free months rent. This is a great savings to our guild of $800 and will allow more leeway for our programs. It was also negotiated that the Masonic would take up donations for us to help purchase battings, fabrics or whatever we need for our charity quilts.
The board would like everyone to know that if you cannot serve or don’t want to that is perfectly ok. You may make up your part in keeping our guild strong with jobs in other areas such as volunteering to chair a project or making an extra charity quilt or donate to the guild in any way that is comfortable for you. It is entirely up to each person. No one is being forced to serve the dinners. It is strictly voluntary! It takes all of us to work together to have fun and enjoy educational workshops and programs! Thanks to everyone! NIQG Board

There will be a sheet for you to sign in your ‘show and Tell’ from now on.

Thank you Bette for representing us!

Friends are like flowers that brighten your day
With fragrance and beauty to share on life’s journey.
So treat them like flowers from the garden or above,
Weed them with merry and water with love!

How many times has your iron taken the plunge to the floor? You know how it works…that sleepy cat warming your ‘blocks to be pressed’ has decided to leap across the room to the far window…as you bend over to reach that quilt book that tells you which direction to press the seams…bumping into the ironing board…trying to upright the iron…catching the cord that’s plugged into a 100 foot extension cord because you can’t get closer to the wall…and the iron does a nose dive straight to the floor! Oh Yeah! We have all been there before! I don’t understand why the manufacturers do not make a sturdier board. We ladies are forced to adapt to the flimsy albatrosses or make our own! Oh I know you can get pretty covers for them. They may look pretty on the top but are still very awkward and tip easily! I found this ode to the iron in the 1999 QNM November issue. I thought you all might enjoy it! Here goes!

Ode to a Fallen Companion
You press my pants, my shirts, my skirts,
You steam my fabric in fits and spurts,
I thank you for this pressed profusion
As you fall to the floor, an ironic conclusion.

HOT-Q
Hooked On Tuesdays-Quilters

Who are they? In the summer of 1985, 9 unique women gathered together to create a lasting friendship and a legacy that has lasted 22 years. They began their meetings at the North Community Action Center (formerly at 1615 N. Rhode Island Ave. ). Their names were Bobbie Meggars, Nora Hedrick, Pearl McCord, Patsy Miller, Rae Emerson, Mary Jane Allen, Doris Klutz, Dixie Shear, and Vickie.
By 1995 they had grown to 16 members and started having their meals served at the center. In 2000 membership had grown to 20 members. In July the HOT-Q’s moved from the North Center to the Senior Center on 4th St. NE.

Today the numbers have reached 24 and growing. Most of the members are also members of the North Iowa Quilters Guild, some are members of other guilds and some do not belong to guilds at all. The HOT-Q group is essentially an extension of NIQG though it welcomes all quilters no matter what their affiliation is. The HOT-Qs continue to eat lunch at the Senior Center whenever possible (it helps the center show how much it is needed in the community) and helps raise fund for the upkeep and day to day running by donating quilts for sale and holding flea markets.
What makes this group unique is that while they have no set structure, they have managed to create charity quilts in numbers that would surprise you. They quietly add their quilts to the North Iowa Guild’s stockpile that go out to different charities several times a year. Last year they completed about 29 quilts and more than that in tops ready to quilt that were completed by NIQG members in January.
Charities that are included are:
SMILE
Linus
Habitat for Humanity
ABC
Comfort

Dixie (being one of only 2 surviving originators) heads up this unique group. Occasionally we host a class for our group and have group projects. Members bring current projects to work on and projects they need help with. We have a show and tell, a newsletter and we even are on the web! You can catch us at: http://HOT-Q.spaces.live.com

Everyone is invited to come Tuesday to enjoy fellowship lunch and also to recieve help with quilts as needed and tables are available to sandwich your quilt.
