2006 Quilt Show Doings
IMPORTANT NOTE FROM OUR PRESIDENT CARLENE DAVIS: I wanted to put this letter in from Carlene for all to see. As it is important that everyone attend the April meeting before Show Time! Since we don’t have a Quilt Show Chair it is important for everyone to be involved and in the know, concerning the Quilt Show activities. Please be thinking of what areas you would like to work in.
At this writing, we have no area concerning Education. Would someone like to set up a mini class or 2 to inspire the public? I remember when I first started quilting that the education mini classes were fun and I had fun learning a new technique, new to a new quilter. These can be very basic. Would someone like to put up a History table of our activities over the years? Perhaps Habitat could have a table set up? ABC quilts will be hung around the gym. Our comfort quilts to members will be displayed with a short info. Linus Quilts? We give a lot of quilts for donation and it is important to let the public know!
Anything you all can think of to make this show special please bring your ideas and let’s make them reality! I would like to add that we too, we will need white sheets! We need them for a variety of things, be it putting quilts on for hanging to covering tables. Please make sure your name is somewhere on the sheets that you bring. Thank you. We will need ladders or step stools also. Please bring whatever you think will benefit the show.
Sue and Florence would like everyone who brings an accessory/s that is put by the feet of the hangers to please put the item on a recipe card with your name and item/s on it. It will make things run smoother. Thank you to everyone! We want a good show and know it can happen! Jenny
Carlene-Just want to put in a note that it is imperative that all members come to the April meeting as assignments and information will be prepared for the Quilt show. I don't think we have to come at 9:00, how would 10:00 be? What doesn't get finished by lunch can be finished before we have a short meeting and show & tell. Let’s have a productive morning along with workshop! If you haven't purchased your 10 tickets, you should do that at the meeting. Remember any sales that you want to enter in the boutique and also items that you might donate to sell for the guild providing 2 sewing related items will gives you free admission. Another item to put in the newsletter pertains to getting their info to us re: Quilts that are to be in the show. If possible, we would like to have the information before the meeting. You can either send the information to me or Kelsey and if you can, it can be done by e-mail. Right now we have info from 4 members and it will take a lot of our time, if you wait until the April meeting. If you don't have enough forms or none at all just to send the information. We need the name of the quilt, category, size, quilted by, pieced by, and any history that might be included. There is a form included in the newsletter. Carlene Davis Ok Girls, you know what to do!
Get your quilt info in ASAP!
See you all at meeting!

Welcome to Kelsey’s Korner!

Each month we will review a web site that deals with quilting. The site’s attributes and faults will be listed allowing the reader to get a feel for the site. I am also letting you know that the new poser is on the web site! You need to look for it and, know the answer. The first one to find it and answer correctly wins another great quilt pattern. It is important that you let Kelsey know you email address! Have fun!
If you type the word Quilt into a search engine it will bring up a total of one and one-half million titles. To be sure some may be repeats when a site has more than one subject on quilts. Still that is a huge number of sites related to quilts.
From Carol Doak’s “World Wide Quilting” site that deals with paper piecing and has a newsletter to the “Aids Memorial Quilt” page, all subjects on quilting imaginable are covered on the internet. Each site is unique to its creator and subject matter.
This month we are going to cover a site called “QuiltUniversity.com.” This unique site is dedicated to creating a classroom type environment for those who want to learn to quilt but cannot attend quilting classes outside of their home.
This is how Quilt U works: No tests. No grades. No pressure. New classes open every weekend from January to mid-November. Registered students receive a password to an online classroom with a teacher-led Discussion Forum and a Student Gallery. Most classes consist of three or four lessons. Lessons open on Saturday morning.
With six new classes opening each weekend for a total of 140 classes that is a lot of on line learning! A sample class, “Border Crossings” with Carol Miller is offered to get you hooked! These classes are clear and concise and full of techniques. If you get lost there is a discussion forum where you can get help.
A quilt challenge is also offered to guilds titled “the Hole Thing”. The idea is to create a quilt with a hole in it exposing batting, backing, another layer or air. It can be an integral part of the quilt or look as if it was an accident. To get the information on the challenge go to QuiltUniversity.com and click on the guild challenge box. This takes you to the student commons room where you will find a link to the rules at the bottom of the box titled Special Displays and Virtual Quilt Shows.
While you are in the commons take a look at the virtual display of prize winning quilts. They are gorgeous and an inspiration. Their current newsletter can be read online or you can register to receive it.
For all this the site is easy on the eyes and a snap to navigate. So if you are looking for a learning experience or just something unique to explore I invite you to take a look. ---Kelsey Jones

Question for the month: If you find an antique quilt with the letters W.C.T.U. (Women's Christian Temperance Union) in embroidery or ink you can be sure the quilt was made to promote the prohibition of alcoholic beverages. The quilt may include the names of members of a local chapter along with anti drinking slogans. In order to raise money they did two things with the quilts. Can you tell me what?

‘Quilt Stuff’, What to do with it When You are Gone

This may not be a very pleasant subject to talk about, but it is a necessary one. What happens to your quilts, quilting stash, patterns, machines and other quilty stuff when you pass on? It is best to let your family know what you desire and your friends too. Two important questions to ask yourself are ‘do you donate or sell’ your ‘Quilt Stuff’? Many of our members who have passed on have done different things.

Pearl McWhorter and Bobbie Meggars’ families had a ‘Quilters Sale’ for all of their sewing friends. The families of Doris Kluss and Rae Embretson had public auctions. Anne Mclntire and Marie Wahlers’ family donated their things to friends to use for themselves and for charity projects. Iva Hannah’s family donated all of her magazines to our guild, which we shared with all members who wanted them. These are just a few options. Each Quilter does her own thing and should decide what she prefers done with her fortune no matter how large or small. Charities are always in need of comfort quilts. Friends of Quilters can be sure that her fabric is used in the manner she wishes. Even if the Quilter decides to divide it, only among friends, that’s ok.

We should all be thinking seriously of our ‘Quilt Stuff’. It helps and relieves the family who don’t quilt the stress of dealing with ‘Quilt stuff’. It may be best to put it in writing on whom gets what and what a particular item/s is worth. You wouldn’t want your $700 machine to sell for $25. It would be a sad day indeed if your entire collection of quilt pins sold for $5 just because a family member didn’t realize the values. Write down your desires and discuss these with family and friends.

You don’t have to stop quilting or buying fabrics and patterns or that new machine you’ve been eyeing just because you have written your wishes down. Continue to sew and quilt to your hearts content for as long as you wish. Keep buying that fabric that makes you feel good! You may even be inspired to finish couple of UFO’s because of embarrassment. You don’t want anyone to think you are a procrastinator and can’t finish a quilt. You might want to get started in that department now if you don’t want to be known as the lady with the 150 UFO’s for sale.

The quilts that you leave your family and friends should have as much information as possible with each of them. Especially if the quilts are inherited ones already, for example ‘this quilt was made by Aunt Lucy for her wedding day in 1920’ and etc. Anything you do to sleep better at night is well worth the effort!

If all else fails you can contact your lawyer and get necessary forms and information on how to handle these issues. Usually the first visit is free. You can check out the Internet too. I am not sure exactly where to look on the net, but a lawyer is sure to be helpful. It might even be useful to get into quilty chat rooms and ask the opinions of other Quilters and what would they do.

So take some time and think about your ‘Quilt Stuff’ and what would be the best way to disperse it that makes you feel comfortable!
