Luncheon following Meeting and Program

A reminder to all groups that you should be meeting the month before your group is scheduled to serve luncheon so as to know who is bringing cookies, sandwiches or bars, juice, centerpiece, cups & napkins. And also to make sure if a group member cannot be available to help the Workshop/ Program gal to bring her wares in and out, to have a replacement. The roly poly tables & elevator are available for your use.
(Note: I believe there are napkins, cups and juice available in Luncheon tote. If you serve the next month check this before you go home).

Another great potluck recipe that we shared last month was ham finger sandwiches. For the life of me I cannot remember who gave me this recipe. Thanks Ladies!

Frayed Jacket by Favorite Things June Workshop, presented by Nancy Malmin. Nancy says that if you find the pattern here to buy it now. Or she will have a sign up sheet to order it. It’s not too early to be thinking about becoming an officer or board member! Please say yes when asked to serve! You never serve alone!
There is always someone there to help!

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please read!
All Groups are responsible for helping the Program/ Workshop gal to unload and reload her things, luncheon and clean up in kitchen. Tables need to be set up in the morning for classes and programs. The tables are heavy and one person cannot set them up by themselves. They also need to have the tables and chairs put away or around the tables at the end of day. This group should also help man the sign in table. For New Members and Visitors to enjoy their first visits they need to be guided and that cannot happen if no one is at the sign in table.
The Temple is open at 8AM.
That means your group needs to be at the Temple no later than 8:15-:30AM to help out.
If you cannot be at the Temple in the morning let your group know or have someone there in your place. If you have to leave early let your group know! The more we work together the more fun we will have!
On another note: When classes are being held and paid for it is courteous to allow the teacher to teach members her project during the morning hours. If you arrive early that’s ok. You can take care of your potluck and visit quietly in the lounge area or kitchen until class is over by usually 11:30 for winding down and packing up projects. Thank you everyone! We want everyone to have a good time and welcome all members to come each month to sew and share good cheer and of course eat potlucks!

My Old Quilting Frame

If my old quilting frames could talk
What tales they'd have to tell.
Of things they heard, while women worked
Or stopped to rest a spell.
For they'd hear of training children
And ornery husbands, too.
Of how to mend young Willie's pants.
Of peach preserves to do.
Sometimes the neighbor's ear must burn
While needles jabbed that quilt.
But mostly kindly things were said
And happy friendships built.
Of all these things my quilting frames
Ne'er breathed a single word
But, kept in strictest confidence
The tales they overheard.

Invitation from the Cedar Valley Quilt Guild!
On behalf of the Cedar Valley Quilt Guild members of Osage, We would like to invite you to our April 30th, 2007 meeting at 7PM. Our featured speaker will be Ann Zemke, (owner of Crocus Lane Quilts) who gives a 60 minute presentation using a very special quilt she made in memory of her grandmother Marjorie Peterson, orphan train rider. The admission is free. Come early for a cup of coffee and refreshments. Our group meets at the Trinity Lutheran Church at 402 State St., Osage, Iowa. Members can go on Ann’s website for additional information. Hope to see you all April 30th!
Jane Rowe 641-832-2349

From 1854-1929 as estimated 250,000 children rode trains from New York and other overpopulated areas of the US, mostly in the Midwest, to find new homes. Some of these children were orphans, others were abandoned, while others were put on the trains by their parents hoping they would have a better life. The trains were called ‘orphan trains’.
Ann Zemke’s passion for quilting started in 1972. She has handcrafted over 150 unique quilts. Her specialty is fine hand quilting, although she enjoys a wide array of quilt making techniques. She offers a full range of custom quilting services, form design to finishing. She also teaches quilt making in a variety of settings.
Ann’s book, ‘They Named Me Marjorie’ about her grandmother’s life journey was published in June 2006. An article that Ann wrote regarding the orphan trains and her grandmother’s special story we published in Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine in Jan/Feb 2005. Better Homes and Gardens magazine plans to highlight Ann in their ‘I Did It’ feature for March 2007 issue. Her 210 page book is available for $15. It has an 8 -color section of the quilt blocks.
Ann’s phone is: 1-763-205-2633

We should get a caravan of vehicles to go see this awesome program! I have room for 3 people in my car! Who wants to go!

A strip of extra wide gross grain ribbon makes a quick quilt sleeve for small quilts. Pink the ends and stitch on!

Cut your binding at the same time as quilt. Press it and it is ready when you are!
Northern Lights for Homeless Women & Children
…Is soon to open. We have donated several quilts to the Men’s Northern Lights. The new center is looking for donations for the women and children who they help. If you cannot make a quilt right now there are several other things that you can bring to give to them. There will be a box in which to put items in if you wish to do so. This box of items will be taken immediately to the new center and given to Joey Van Zomeren the executive director.
Joey says that the Northern Lights Men’s Shelter has been operating since 1999 with over 1,837 men assisted. So far since January 2006 Northern Lights for Homeless Shelter has assisted over 73 women, children and families with rent, utilities, clothing and food. With the new facility now located in the YWCA building they are better able to give assistance rather than a temporary fix. Anything you can give will be much appreciated!

Wish list for Women, children and families:
Bedding (blankets, sheets, preferably twin, pillows)
Bath towels, hand towels, wash cloths
Kitchen towels, dish towels
Food (canned, condiments, juices)

Being as we all live in the farming communities of Iowa and Minnesota I thought you all might enjoy this little piece sent to me from my dear x-Sister in law Judy whom I still consider my Sister.
I remember as a little girl staying at my Gramma Rowe’s farm and actually using the ‘House Behind the House’. It was situated between the laying hens house and the garage. It was a ‘three holer’ with one small for kids and 2 larger ones. I remember it was not very pleasant during the summer months (remembering the wasps, flies and odor) and darn cold in the winter! And a big deal for my Dad and uncles to clean out!
Maybe that is why when I turned 10 or 11 they were able to convert a room in their farmhouse to a modern bathroom. I remember my Gramma was thrilled not only to have a commode in the house but a sink and bathtub too in the same room!
Maybe this will bring back memories to you too!

The House Behind The House
One of my fondest memories As I recall the days of yore was the little house, behind the house, With the crescent o'er the door.    'Twas a place to sit and ponder With your head all bowed down low; Knowing that you wouldn't be there, If you didn't have to go.    Ours was a multi-holer, three,With a size for every one. You left there feeling better, After your job was done.    You had to make those frequent trips In snow, rain, sleet, or fog-- To that little house where you usually Found the Sears-Roebuck catalog.    Oft times in dead of winter, The seat was spread with snow. Twas then with much reluctance, To that little house you'd go.    With a swish you'd clear that wooden seat, Bend low, with dreadful fear You'd shut your eyes and grit your teeth As you settled on your rear.    I recall the day Ol' Granddad, Who stayed with us one summer, Made a trip out to that little house Which proved to be a bummer.    'Twas the same day that my Dad hadFinished painting the kitchen green. He'd just cleaned up the mess he'd made With rags and gasoline.     He tossed the rags down in the hole Went on his usual way Not knowing that by doing so He'd eventually rue the day. Now Granddad had an urgent call, I never will forget! This trip he made to the little house Stays in my memory yet.    He sat down on the wooden seat, With both feet on the floor. He filled his pipe and tapped it down And struck a match on the outhouse door.   He lit the pipe and sure enough,it soon began to glow.He slowly raised his rear a bit And tossed the flaming match below.    The Blast that followed, I am told Was heard for miles around; And there was poor ol' Granddad Sprawled out there on the ground.    The smoldering pipe still in his mouth, His eyes were shut real tight; The celebrated three-holer Was blown clear out of sight.    We asked him what had happened, What he said I'll ne'er forget. He said he thought it must have been The pinto beans he et!   Next day we had a new one Dad put it up with ease. But this one had a door sign that read: No Smoking, Please!   Now that's the story's end my friend,Of memories long ago, When we went to the house behind the house, because we had to go. Appliqué using old dryer sheets- save all your used dryer sheets-rinse them in clean water to make sure no residue is left. Iron them. Place your appliqué piece face up and lay dryer sheet on top of it. Sew all the way around- slit sheet back and turn out. Ideal for leaves and petals.

1 yard of cotton weighs about 4oz!
4 yards of fabric weighs 1 lb!
